[Cytogenetic effect of thaliblastine in a culture of human peripheral blood lymphocytes].

The mutagenicity of thaliblastine (Bulgarian potential antitumor drug) was investigated in vitro in lymphocytes from healthy donors, and in vivo in lymphocytes of oncological patients after thaliblastine administration. No increase in the rate of chromosome aberrations was noted with increasing thaliblastine concentrations in vitro and in the course of therapy in vivo. Some polyploid metaphases were found in the lymphocytes of the patients treated with thaliblastine, as a result of the statmokinetic effect of the drug. Thaliblastine exerts extraordinarily slight mutagenic effect, as compared with other cytostatics.

Clinical experience with bypass of the left ventricle using a roller pump.

Left ventricular bypass (LVB) using a roller pump was performed in 39 patients in the immediate postoperative period. In one group, LVB was performed as a last measure to restore cardiac function. The LVB was temporarily effective in this group, but independent circulation was restored in only 2 of 15 patients. Results were considered unsatisfactory. In a second group, LVB was used immediately when acute left ventricular insufficiency refractory to drug treatment developed. In this group, independent circulation was restored in 17 of 18 patients, demonstrating a therapeutic effect. Overall, cardiac activity was restored in 25 patients; 15 patients recovered and were released. Conditions for the recovery of patients are noted.

[Changes in the activity of serum enzymes and other paraclinical indices in experimental liver damage in calves].

Six calves were used to formulate a model of liver injury, following up the activity of the serum enzymes LAP, ALD, AP, GPT, GOT, OKT, and guanase. Studied were also the contents of blood sugar, calcium, phosphorus as well as some indices of the lipid metabolism. It was found that even with the least severe injuries of the liver there was a considerable rise of the OKT, guanase, GOT, GPT, and LAP activity. It is believed that the enzyme changes alone could serve as a specific index to detect the earliest injury of the liver.

[Paraclinical indices in experimental damage to the renal parenchyma].

A model was developed of the experimental injury of kidney parenchyma with the use of potassium bichromate with six calves. Studied was the activity of ChE, LAP, ALD, APh, GOT, GPT, OKT, and guanase as well as the level of blood sugar, calcium, and inorganic phosphorus. It was found that ALD, ChE, and LAP formed a good enzyme constellation to follow up the functional status of the kidney parenchyma. The results obtained needed further clinical processing.

[Enzyme constellation in cows of the Simmental crossbreed and Black Pied breed during the dry period and lactation].

Studied was the enzyme constellation, resp., activity of alkaline phosphatase (AP), glutamate-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT), aldolase (ALD), leucin-aminopeptidase (LAP), cholinesterase (CE), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ornithine carbamoyltransferase (OCT), and guanase (G) in a total of 360 clinically normal and lactating and dry cows of the Black-and-White and Simmental crossbreeds. Characteristic quantitative changes were found with GOT, GPT, ALD, LDH, and CPK both over the dry period and over the entire period of lactation. The activity of LAP, AP, OCT, and G was not influenced by the functional status of the animals. In the course of the analyses there were changes in the serum ALD, CE, and GOT, associated with the breed. The enzymes referred to were studied with a view to establishing their normal parameters needed for the practice as the base to demonstrate preclinical disturbances in individual organs and tissues of the cows during pregnancy and the puerperium.

[Acid-base status and antibody production in pigs immunized with a vaccine against erysipelas].

Studied was the correlation between the acid-alkaline status and the antibody production in pigs treated with the VR-2 vaccine against swine erysipelas. A progressive growth of the values of the B-system indices was established as early as the 24th hour in correlation with the higher HCO3 and CO2 values. The latter substantiated a new profile of the acid-alkaline state, which persisted up to the 10th day. The subsidiary increase in the concentration of HCO3 from the 10th to the 15th day as well as of pCO2 on the 15th day was associated with the highest percent and absolute number of B lymphocytes and 'AOK' at 10(6). This confirmed the presence of a gradual correlation between the indices of the acid-alkaline state and the B system.

Determination of total and divided clearance without blood sampling and not using a whole-body counter or gamma camera.

A method is suggested for the determination of total and divided clearance on the basis of one renal function-excretion. The method, which can also be used for hydronephrotic cases, does not involve blood sampling or the use of a whole-body counter or gamma camera. The method was applied to 73 patients, 14 of whom presented with hydronephrosis. Of the 73 patients, 12 were comparatively examined, and the divided clearance was simultaneously determined in three different ways: graphically, by the areas enclosed between the blood-clearance heart curve and the beginning of the secretion phase of the nephrograms; by catheterizing and measuring the excreted urine from each kidney in a well-crystal detector; by the suggested method without taking blood samples. There was good agreement between the results obtained by the last two methods.

[Enzyme constellation of the blood plasma in the prognosis of decreased adaptability in newborn calves].

The dynamic was studied of the enzyme activity of ChE, APh, Ald, GOAT, GPT, LDG, and CPh in 30 newborn calves. Fifteen of the animals developed coli bacteriosis later on. Blood was sampled at the 6th to 24th hour as well as on the 5th day following birth. At the 6th hour ChE, APh, Ald, and CPh of the diseased calves showed lower activity as against the enzyme activity of the unaffected animals. Similar trend was noticed also at the 24th hour. Contrary to the other enzymes of the constellation the changes observed in the activity of GPT were invariably connected with a considerable rise in diseased animals. The changes in the activity and dynamic of the investigated enzyme constellation can be used to forecast the incidence of coli bacteriosis.

[Effect of environmental factors on the body response reactions in newborn calves].

Studied was the role of the general state and the adaptability of newborn calves under the effect of some environmental factors (temperature and relative humidity) that had no optimal values in the onset of diseases caused by occasionally pathogenic agents. It was found that under conditions that were one and the same for all calves the metabolic and functional responses were varying. Those of the animals with which the nervous-and-hormonal system was more unstable manifested a specific biochemical-and-functional response through which no'equilibration' was achieved with the environment, and they got sick. Others, exhibiting metabolic processes that were stronger and more stable as the result of the involvement of more powerful regulatory mechanisms inherent to a 'neuro-functional' animal organism could adapt successfully to the nonoptimal factors of the environment. Such animals were not shown to be susceptible to the effects of conditionally pathogenic agents.

[Age-related dynamics of blood biochemical indices in Black Pied calves].

The level of a number of blood indices was followed up in Black-and-white calves from the first day after birth up to the sixth month such as hemoglobin, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, blood sugar, phosphorus, and total, ionized, and protein-bound calcium, with total protein. The calves were clinically normal and were raised in various regions under routinely adopted zoohygiene, technologic, and microclimatic conditions and parameters, and were offered rations that were currently adopted in this country. The dynamic established with the changes of the indices investigated disclosed possibilities of obtaining additional information concerning the state of the animal's organism which proved instrumental in choosing the right prophylaxis in compliance of the respective age period.

[Changes in the white blood picture and the T- and B-lymphocyte counts in the peripheral blood of pigs after treatment with E. coli endotoxin].

Studied were the changes in the total count of the white blood cells, the leukocyte formula, and the T- and B-lymphocytes of young pigs (2-3 months old) at various intervals following treatment with an E. coli enterotoxin. It was found that there set in an essential drop of the total count of the white blood cells during the first 24 hours after treatment, with a following rising trend. There were also characteristic changes in the ratio between the various types of white blood cells, with a rise of the lymphocytes and monocytes. The level of T-POK and B-POK rose after the endotoxin was injected--for the T cells it reached peak values between the 3d and 5th day, while for the B cells it was highest between the 5th and 7th day. There was a following drop with both types of cells, and by the 15th day the initial level was reached.
