Neural control of gene expression in the skeletal muscle fibre: the nature of the lesion in the muscular protein-synthesizing machinery following denervation.

Experiments are reported showing that following 8 days of denervation the function of the protein-synthesizing machinery, operating in the rat gastrocnemius fibres, is altered, probably as a consequence of decreased amounts of ribosomes and actively translated mRNA. In addition, the data obtained show that the amount per muscle and the availability per ribosome of the soluble factors involved in the process of protein synthesis are markedly decreased, thus suggesting that the amounts of ribosomes, mRNA and soluble factors are regulated in a concerted fashion when muscular protein synthesis is decreased after denervation.

Neural control of gene expression in the skeletal muscle fibre: changes in the muscular mRNA population following denervation.

The mRNA populations of control and 8-days-denervated adult rat gastrocnemius have been analysed by the translation assay and the cDNA-mRNA molecular hybridization technique. This analysis demonstrates the appearance of marked changes in many of the mRNA sequences present in muscle fibres following denervation and thus gives strong support to the hypothesis that the motoneurons are able to control the gene expression of muscle fibres.

[Plasma LH, FSH, TSH, prolactin and cortisol during a combined test of pituitary reserve in prepubertal subjects with short stature].

The effect of a combined test (insulin, TRH, LHRH) on plasma concentrations of LH, FSH, PRL, Cortisol was studied in 18 normal subjects in prepubescent state and in 65 patients in prepubescent state with short stature. In 6 subjects with short stature there was no change of LH, and in 7 subjects with short stature there was no change of FSH. In conclusion the combined test for pituitary stimulation provides an useful method for localizing the lesion in disorders of hypothalamo-pituitary axis.

[Effect of the degree of short stature on the type of response to tests of pituitary growth hormone reserve].

Two HGH (insulin and L-Dopa) stimulating tests were performed at time interval on 65 subjects with short stature (SDs between -2 and -4.5 according to Tanner) and on 18 control subjects, in order to study the influence of short stature degree on the HGH behaviour during the stimulating tests. The results obtained show that: 1. Statistically the short stature degree does not affect the response to HGH stimulating tests. 2. Two tests are necessary to avoid erroneous diagnosis of dwarfism caused by lack of HGH. 3. No response to HGH stimulating tests in subjects with normal stature may prove a discrepancy between the hormone measured radioimmunologically and its biological action.

Annual variations in the total lipid and protein content of the liver, fat body, ovary and plasma of the female frog (Rana esculenta L.).

The concentrations of lipid and protein in the ovary, fat body, liver and plasma of the female frog (Rana esculenta L.) were found to exhibit marked seasonal variations. There was an interesting correspondence between the depletion of lipid in the plasma and fat body and an increased level of lipid in the ovary. It would appear that oestrogenic steroids stimulate and increase the concentrations of lipids in the plasma, whereas pituitary gonadotrophins influence the uptake of lipids by ovarian tissue for vitellogenesis.
