[The history of the Bamberg glass factory. An example for medicine and environmental protection in the early 19th century].

The theme is the story of the building and setting in motion of a glass factory in Bamberg between the years 1802-1811. It is an historical example of the problem how to handle industrialization with reference to the ecological consequences. Two german physicians, Andreas Röschlaub and Anton Dorn, were against this project; they realised the possible results to man's health. Röschlaub, through his "Erregungstheorie" especially showed a subtitle understanding of the relationship between organism and its environment. Both presented arguments for moderate industrialization with consideration of influences on the environment.

[Auguste Böhner's death. Chronicle of a medical scandal, its background and its historical significance].

When the 15-year-old Auguste Böhmer, daughter of Caroline Schlegel and stepdaughter of August Wilhelm Schlegel, died on 12th July 1800, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling was accused of being responsible for this tragic event, because he tried to treat her according to the medical system of John Brown. The ensuing scandal became a symbol for the danger of every progressive movement of that time: the Romantic literature, the natural philosophy of Schelling and Brownianism in its German version, represented by Andreas Röschlaub. An attempt is made to analyse the social and political background of the scandal and to argue the historical meaning as a fight against a fundamental reform of medicine.

[Intensive care as ethical problem. Opening address of the 21st Symposium of the German-Austrian Society of Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine in Mannheim 26 October 1995].

The lecture focuses on two issues related to intensive care in pediatrics: uncertainty in prognosis and plurality in ethics. Despite the increasing plurality in ethics consensus can be achieved about the basic moral principles in medicine. The principles of medical ethics--mainly autonomy, beneficience, nonmaleficience and justice--provide an acceptable normative basis. The uncertainty of prognosis is described as an unavoidable element of acting in medicine, in particular in intensive care. Internalized dispositions are proposed to be a morally adequate answer to this structure given in medicine: conscientiousness, carefulness, engagement.
