The distribution of chymotrypsin within the feces and description of a new device for the preparation of stool samples.

We measured the distribution of chymotrypsin within feces by comparing duplicate 100-mg stool aliquots from 48 stool specimens. For practical purposes, the distribution of the enzyme in stool appears sufficiently homogeneous to assure representative results even from 100-mg stool aliquots. Given this likelihood, we have developed a new disposable device that measures 100-mg stool aliquots hygienically, prepares this material for shipping by mail, homogenizes and suspends the stool sample, and facilitates centrifugation of the fecal suspension, all within the same instrument. Performance studies with this new device revealed that stools of different consistency can be measured out precisely and conveniently by volume. The difference in the specific weight of different stools appears to be so low that for practical purposes a 100-mg mass of stool can be weighed out by volume.

Lack of immunostimulatory effect of N-acetyl muramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine on selected chicken immune functions.

Synthetic N-acetyl muramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine, syn. muramyl-dipeptide (MDP) was found to be immunostimulatory in several experimental animal species. In order to determine the influence of MDP on the chicken immune response, different doses (0.05-0.2 mg) of this compound were administered to 6-week old chickens, and cellular as well as humoral immune functions were tested. Neither the immune response against sheep red blood cells or Newcastle disease virus (strain Hitchner B 1), nor the ability to reject skin grafts, or to react in the delayed hypersensitivity (tuberculin) test, were affected significantly under the experimental conditions employed. This study reveals little evidence for parallels between the ability of the chicken immune system and the immune system of other animal species examined so far, to develop enhanced immune reactions under the influence of MDP.

[The primary malignant non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the stomach].

From 1970 to 1980, 643 patients suffering from a malignancy of the stomach were seen at the Surgical Department of Rostock University. 8 of them were identified to have a Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Treatment should be done depending on the staging: Stage I and II extirpation of the tumour followed by adjunctive chemotherapy, Stage III and IV primary chemotherapy only.

[Comparative studies of avian mycoplasmas by flat gel polyacrylamide electrophoresis (author's transl)].

The phenol-acetic-acid extraced cell proteins of Mycoplasma (M.) and Acholeplasma (A.) reference strains (PG31 (M. gallisepticum), PG 16 (M. gallinarum), PG30 (M iners), 17529 (M. meleagridis), WVU 1853 (M. synoviae), 1340 (M. anatis), PG8 and PG9 (A. laidlawii), CKK (Serovar C), DD (Serovar D), WR1 (Serogroup F), 695 (Serogroup I) and 694 (Serogroup L) were anlysed by the flat gel polyacrylamide electrophoresis. With exception of PG8 and PG9 the Coomassie Blue-stained protein patterns show that each of the strains produced reproducible characteristic electrophoretic pattern by which the reference strains could be differentiated. However, before the question could be answered whether the procedure described is suitable to replace the serological species differentiation of avian mycoplasmas, serological and electrophoretic studies of a relevant number of field strain are necessary.

Kinetic enzymatic method for automated determination of glucose in blood and serum.

Studies are reported on the reaction kinetics of the glucose assay according to Trinder which involves the specific oxidation of glucose by glucose oxidase and the determination of the hydrogen peroxide released by means of phenol and 4-aminophenazone in the presence of peroxidase. The results have been used to develop a general kinetic fixed-time method for the analysis of glucose in whole blood and serum. The single reagent method has been adapted to the ENI GEMSAEC centrifugal analyzer and to the Abbott ABA-100 analyzer. The procedures exhibited excellent precision and the results correlated well with those obtained by the hexokinase method, Linearity was achieved from 3 to 64 mmol/1 glucose for the GEMSAEC method, and from 3 to 33 mmol/1 glucose for the ABA-100 method. Reagent or sample blank corrections were not necessary. There were no interferences from various drugs, hemoglobin, bilirubin, or lipemia.

[Myxoma of the heart (author's transl)].

In every valvular defect of the heart and in particular of the mitral valve the existence of a tumour should be taken into consideration if diagnostic criteria are not evident. In this case the operation should not be delayed and performed in extracorporeal circulation.
