For 219 children between 3 and 15 years with the most frequent congenital and acquired heart failures it was investigated in what way the STI differ consistently from the corresponding standard values. It was found that all the STI of children with cardiovascular diseases can vary from the normal values scaled by heart rate even in disorders of the right heart. The STI naturally have the greatest diagnostical significance in the evaluation of failures of the left heart, especially aortic stenosis (shortened PEP lengthened QS2 and LVET), and of heart partition defects (shortened LVET, prolonged PEP, normal QS2). Statistically individual groups of heart disorders can be differentiated from one another by the STI rather well.
The concept of "systolic time intervals" was introduced into noninvasive cardiologic examination by Weissler et al.; in detail these are the following data: the total electromechanical systole = QS2, the left ventricular ejection time = LVET, the preejection period = PEP and the quotient PEP/LVET. These quantities are not in principle new parameters; in the German literature the QS2 is known as "Systolendauer", the LVET is identical to the "Austreibungszeit" and the PEP is identical to the "Anspannungszeit". The determination of PEP (= QS2-LVET) is preferable to the usual calculation of the "Anspannungszeit" nach Blumberger in so far as longer time intervals must be measured and therefore the statistical error decreases. From 96 children between 3 and 15 years polygraphic tracings were recorded and the STI were calculated and standard values were ascertained and were evaluated statistically. QS2 and LVET grow longer linearly with increasing age (p less than or equal to 0.001) and diminish linearly with increasing heart rate (p less than or equal to 0.001). For PEP only the inverse correlation with the heart rate was significant. PEP/LVET does not very significantly. Girls have longer PEP (+ 6 msec, p less than or equal to 0.01) and higher PEP/LVET (+ 0.04, p less than or equal to 0.001) than boys. The normal range of variation of the STI is relatively large (QS2: 278-386 msec, LVET: 200-285 MSEC, PEP: 65-114 msec, PEP/LVET: 0.27-0.47). For the examination of individual cases it is better to compare them with the standard values ascertained by the regression equations (table 3+4).
The purpose of this study was to describe the ultrasonographic appearance of the normal bovine pancreas and to establish reference values for healthy cattle. Ultrasonographic examinations were performed on the right side of 20 healthy cows. Ultrasonographically the body and right limb of pancreas appeared as a triangle-shaped structure associated with the liver, portal vein, right kidney, and duodenum. In comparison to normal liver, the pancreas appeared isoechoic or slightly more echogenic. The right lobe of the pancreas was evaluated from the right flank to the eleventh intercostal space, and the body of the pancreas was visualized from the twelfth to the tenth intercostal space. The left lobe of the pancreas could not be seen because of its dorsomedial location. In 9 cows, the accessory pancreatic duct was located near the right lobe of the pancreas and appeared as two parallel echogenic lines with a hypoechogenic area between them. The diameter of the accessory pancreatic duct varied from 6 to 8 mm. The pancreaticoduodenal vein was seen in 5 cows. The diameter of the pancreaticoduodenal vein varied from 3 to 4 mm. The ultrasonographic characteristics determined in this study may serve as a reference in the evaluation of cows with suspected pancreatic disease.
This report describes the ultrasonographic and radiographic findings and the treatment of a Swiss Brown cow with a retropharyngeal abscess caused by improper administration of a magnet.
Results with second-line treatment of advanced colorectal cancer are poor. Preliminary phase I/II results suggest encouraging response rates to high-dose 5-fluorouracil (FU) (2,600 mg/m2) combined with folinic acid (FA) in pretreated patients with advanced colorectal cancer. To determine the significance of weekly high-dose FU/FA in colorectal cancer refractory to weekly standard doses of FU/FA, a phase II study was initiated. 69 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer refractory to first-line weekly standard-dose FU/FA were treated with weekly high-dose FU 2,600 mg/m2 combined with FA 500 mg/m2 as a 2-hour infusion prior to FU application. Pretreatment was highly homogenous and consisted of weekly FU 500 mg/m2 combined with FA 500 mg/m2 or FA 20 mg/m2 or the pure stereoisomer of FA (6S-FA) 250 mg/m2. At the time of disease progression under first-line therapy, patients were transferred to high-dose FU/FA within 4 weeks. Treatment was continued until tumor progression under therapy was documented. Of the 69 evaluable patients, 17 (24.6%) achieved partial response (PR), 42 (60.9%) had no change (NC) and 10 (14.5%) had progressive disease under therapy. The median duration of PR was 7 months, the median time to progression of NC was 4 months. Median survival of all patients was 9 months, of patients with PR, 11.5 months. 33/38 patients with tumor-related pain experienced impressive relief under therapy. Prognostic factors for a beneficial outcome were complete response/PR under first-line therapy, a small number of metastatic sites and a good Karnofsky performance status. Moderate toxicity was observed, and the pattern of toxic events and severity did not differ from standard-dose FU regimens.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Russian knapweed (Acroptilon repens [L.] DC.) and yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis L.) are invasive weeds in the western United States, and both weeds are targeted for biological control. Cercosporella acroptili (Bremer) U. Braun was identified as a possible biological control agent for A. repens, and a morphologically similar Cercosporella sp. recently was found damaging to C. solstitialis in the field. Because both fungi are potentially important for biological control of the respective weeds, studies were undertaken to ascertain whether the isolates were identical based on morphology, pathogenicity, growth and spore production, and genetics (molecular characterization of the internal transcribed spacer regions of the ribosomal RNA genes). Differences in these variables between the two isolates were sufficient to indicate that the isolate from C. solstitialis was distinct and justified a new description at the species level: Cercosporella centaureicola sp. nov.
The goal of this study was to determine via echocardiography the size of the left and right cardiac ventricles and the width of the interventricular septum and the left free ventricular wall in 51 healthy cows. The heart regions were examined in standing cows using a 3.0 Mhz sector transducer in 2-D-Mode. The dimensions of the heart were measured in the caudal long and short axes on the right side and in the caudal and cranial long axes on the left. The diameter of the ventricles was determined in a plane immediately beneath the mitral or tricuspid valves and that of the aorta and pulmonary artery in a plane immediately above the aortic and pulmonary valves, respectively. At the end of the study, all of the cows were slaughtered, the hearts were removed and the same parameters were determined using a tape measure. Results of in vivo and in vitro measurements were compared. In the right caudal long axis, the diameters of the left ventricle during both diastole (x +/- s = 7.0 +/- 0.73 cm) and systole (4.5 +/- 0.69 cm) were larger than those of the right ventricle during diastole (4.1 +/- 1.02 cm) and systole (3.6 +/- 0.98 cm). The diameter of the ventricles during diastole was larger than that during systole. Analogous results were obtained in both other axes. The diameter of the right ventricle during systole was larger when measured in the right caudal long axis (3.6 +/- 0.98 cm) than in the right caudal short axis (3.2 +/- 1.15 cm). This was also true for measurements obtained during diastole. The interventricular septum and the left ventricular wall were thicker during systole than during diastole. The diameter of the pulmonary artery was larger during diastole (5.6 +/- 0.82 cm) than systole (5.2 +/- 0.84 cm). The diameter of the aorta was smaller than that of the pulmonary artery and did not change significantly during diastole (4.9 +/- 0.92 cm) and systole (4.8 +/- 0.80 cm). The diameters of both ventricles measured at post mortem were smaller than those measured in vivo during diastole and larger than those measured during systole. There were no significant differences between the measurements performed twice, three days apart, in 11 of the cows.

The distribution of the various classes of immunoglobulins (IG) in synovial membranes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and in osteoarthritis (OA) is analyzed. Both plasma cells and extravascular deposits of immunoglobulins are stained using class-specific antisera and the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique. It can be shown that the local humoral immune response in RA-Synovialitis occurs at a higher level than that of OA; inflammatory infiltrates are denser and plasma cells are activated to a higher degree which is evident in the greater intensity of cytoplasmic staining. While there is no difference in the relation between singular classes of IG in these two groups of diseases, the fraction of plasma cells synthesizing an immunoglobulin is greatly elevated in RA-Synovialitis and there is a correlation of this to the morphological degree of RA-Synovialitis. This applies even more to extravascular deposits of IG with rheumatoid-factor-activity. The determination and staining of extravascular immunoglobulins with a polyvalent anti-human-serum or with antisera specific for the gamma, alpha, and mu-antigens of heavy chains as well as the demonstration of rheumatoid-factor activity of these IG constitute a possibility to histochemically discriminate between RA-Synovialitis and OA-induced synovialitis. In OA, intensely stained areas of IG with rheumatoid-factor-activity located extravascularly are never found.
