[Injuries and physical complaints caused by golf].

The marked torsional movements involved in swinging a golf club are stressful for both the vertebral column and the extremities of the golf player. 52.5% of 120 golf players questioned in this regard stated that they experienced complaints or injuries. These are mainly caused by faulty swinging of the club or by carelessness. A considerable proportion of the vertebral column complaints had worsened as a result of playing golf, so that it is imperative to examine whether the player should be advised not to play golf if such complaints already existed before. If the technique of swinging the golf club is correctly employed, golf can be considered as a low-injury rate pastime.

Molecular interaction of different chromium species with nucleotides and nucleic acids.

The interaction of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) with the phosphate groups of di- and triphosphate nucleotides were examined by 31P-NMR spectroscopy. Chemical shifts of the phosphate groups, indicating the formation of Cr-nucleotide complexes, could only be detected with Cr(III). When Cr(III) was generated from Cr(VI) by reduction with an excess of glutathione, nearly the same chemical shifts could be observed. This indicates that glutathione is not capable of trapping Cr(VI) by reduction with subsequent formation of stable Cr-GSH complexes, thus preventing the binding of chromium to important target molecules as DNA or nucleotides. Using radioactively-labelled chromium no 51Cr(VI) bound to any nucleic acid, whereas 51Cr(III) bound in increasing order to poly(A).poly(U), calf thymus DNA and poly(G).poly(C). Furthermore, the melting temperature of nucleic acids increased in the same order only in the presence of Cr(III). Possible genotoxic consequences in vivo of the presented data in vitro concerning the binding of Cr(III) to sensitive molecular targets are discussed in detail.

[Comparison of three histometric methods for the comprehension of stimulating effects on the rat thyroid gland].

There exist some histometric methods for the morphological quantification of different strongly stimulating effects on the thyroid gland induced by drugs and/or other chemical substances in dependence upon dose and duration of application. But in respect of technical and temporal expense and also diagnostic statement, there are considerable differences between these recording procedures. Therefore we examined the 3 mostly used methods synchronously (i.e. determination of thyroid epithelial cell height, nuclear volume in thyrocytes, and estimation of relative volume parts in the thyroid gland by the point counting method) by investigating the thyroid glands of methylthiouracil-(MTU)-stimulated rats and corresponding controls in order to compare the diagnostic value and temporal expense. The largest temporal expense was required in the nuclear volume determination, the smallest in the point-counting method. On principle, all 3 procedures allow the determination of hypertrophic alterations but only by help of the point-counting method, also hyperplastic changes are recognizable. By nuclear volume determination, we found significant differences between central and peripheral parts of the thyroid gland. Therefore, to avoid the subjective error, it will be necessary to measure a large number of nuclei in many planes of the gland. Also the determination of epithelial cell high reinforces the subjective error because of the heterological structure especially in unstimulated thyroid gland. If the number of counting points is exactly determined and, full of sense, limited, the point-counting method allows a nearly complete measuring of the whole object to be tested within an acceptable investigation time. In this way, the heterological structure of thyroid gland will be regarded, and comparability and reproducibility are guaranteed on an high level.

[Follow-up after enucleation in choroid melanoma].

We report on 31 patients who underwent enucleation between 1976 and 1984 for uveal melanoma and had a mean follow-up of 107 months. There was no irradiation to the globe or orbit prior to enucleation, which was done under general anesthesia. Histology showed that: the average diameter of the tumors was 10.6 mm and the average height 6.2 mm. There were 3 cases of spindle-cell A-type tumors, 19 of spindle-cell B, 2 of mixed cell types, and 7 cases of mixed cell types with epithelioid cell dominance or epithelioid cell tumors. In September 1988, 9 patients (29%) had died as of a result of metastases from the melanoma; 4 patients who died were found to have another malignant tumor; 1 patient died due to cerebral apoplexia; 1 patient died 8 days after enucleation due to unknown causes. The survival curve was based on the Kaplan-Meier method.

[Clinical results using the PM type of hip endoprosthesis].

The results of clinical follow-up examinations of cement-free PM total hip replacements implanted between March 1981 and December 1985 are reported. Of 231 PM hips, 125 were re-examined. Questionnaires were completed by 58 patients who were not examined. With an average value of 15.7 points according to Merle d'Aubigné, the overall clinical results may be regarded as good. A total of 86.4% of the patients stated that their condition was better than before surgery. However, almost 20% had severe complaints. These included on the one hand soft-tissue complaints, in particular in the immediate postoperative phase; on the other, in cases with initially minor sinking-in of the shaft and subsequently more than 5 mm, there was a high level of significance in the correlation to the complaints which occurred. No problems occurred with the screw-in acetabulum.

[Film digital and texture analysis for digital classification of pulmonary spot opacities].

The study aimed at evaluating the effect of different methods of digitisation of radiographic films on the digital classification of pulmonary opacities. Test sets from the standard of the International Labour Office (ILO) Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconiosis were prepared by film digitisation using a scanning microdensitometer or a video digitiser based on a personal computer equipped with a real time digitiser board and a vidicon or a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera. Seven different algorithms were used for texture analysis resulting in 16 texture parameters for each region. All methods used for texture analysis were independent of the mean grey value level and the size of the image analysed. Classification was performed by discriminant analysis using the classes from the ILO classification. A hit ratio of at least 85% was achieved for a digitisation by scanner digitisation or the vidicon, while the corresponding results of the CCD camera were significantly less good. Classification by texture analysis of opacities of chest X-rays of pneumoconiosis digitised by a personal computer based video digitiser and a vidicon are of equal quality compared to digitisation by a scanning microdensitometer. Correct classification of 90% was achieved via the discribed statistical approach.

[Therapy of rupture of the great tubercle].

In most cases isolated avulsions of the great tubercle can be treated conservatively. 31 Patients suffering from an isolated avulsion of the great tubercle had to go through an after-examination. 30 of these patients were fixed on the conservative method for three to four days mostly, usually with a Desault-dressing, and, subsequently, they had to undergo a functional after-treatment, even if the dislocation of the fragment was partly more than 1 cm. Only once, in the case of subacromial position of the fragment, an operative fixation was performed. On an average, an after-examination followed 1.8 years after the accident. Only eight patients complained about occasional trouble, five of whom, only, suffered from a slight reduction of mobility. It was remarkable that the occurring discomfort had nothing to do with the original degree of the dislocation of the fragment. In all, with the therapy performed as described above, a satisfying functional healing result was achieved. According to the present results, the operative fixation only has to be performed in the case of mechanical disability with a dislocation underneath the acromion.

[Conservative therapy of shoulder dislocation].

There is no undivided agreement in how long a shoulder ought to be fixed after a luxation. Having made a distinction between the terms of habitual and posttraumatic recidivous luxation of the shoulder, the results of a retrospective analysis of 118 luxations of the shoulder are shown, with 75 outpatients after a primary luxation. In most cases the fixation in the Desault-dressing was maintained for three to four days and was followed by early-functional physiotherapeutical after-treatment. Ten patients = 14.9% developed posttraumatic recidivous, and eight patients = 10.4% habitual luxations. In comparison with other analyses, these results show that with a short time of fixation of three to four days there is no higher tendency to reluxation than with a longer time of fixation. If a habitual or a posttraumatic recidivous luxation occurs, operative treatment is required.

[Modification of the diagnosis of thyroid gland function by iodine-containing roentgen contrast media].

The influence on the parameters of the thyroid gland BEI, T3-, T4- and TSH-serum level by the iodine-containing oral bile X-ray contrast remedy Falignost is demonstrated. Following a peripheral conversions inhibition from T4 to T3 by the contrast remedy the thyroid hormones in the serum are changed in different kind and duration. This influence is more expressed in patients with liver cirrhosis and continues. The risk of an iodine-induced hyperthyroidism is discussed. In the judgment of a possible disturbance of the function of the thyroid gland anamnestically is always to be asked the question about previous applications of iodine-containing drugs and it must be accordingly be taken into consideration.

[Population genetics and the coagulation factor XIII A polymorphism].

Platelets of 235 blood donors were typed for FXIII A polymorphism using agarose gel electrophoresis with subsequent immunofixation with anti-FXIIIA serum. The allele frequencies obtained (FXIIIA 1 = 0.7787, FXIIIA 2 = 0.2212) are in agreement with previously published data for Caucasoid populations. FXIIIA may be an additional valuable marker for paternity and linkage studies.

Drug combinations--concepts and terminology.

The terms "synergism" and "antagonism" are used inconsistently in pharmacology and toxicology designating different circumstances. This is a source of recurring scientific conflict. The present paper elucidates the existing discrepancies, and offers a consistent terminology incorporating also such terms as "additivity", "potentiation", and "simple similarity".

[Current assessment of radioimmunological determination (RIA) of prostate acid phosphatase in the diagnosis of prostatic cancer].

Sera of patients without any tumors of the prostate and sera of patients with benign and malignant tumors of the prostate were tested with the enzyme assay using thymolphthalein monophosphate as substrate. The results were compared with the RIA of Clinical Assay (Travenol) and found to yield an approximately 50% better recognition of malignant growth. However, false-positive rates were rather high (approximately 20%), which lowers the overall success rate to approximately 30%.

Absence of fractionation, protraction, radiation quality, and radical scavenger effects on radiation-induced interphase death of human G0 lymphocytes in vitro.

In vitro interphase death of human peripheral blood lymphocytes, measured by shortening of the mean lifetime of small G0 lymphocytes, was studied with 150 kV and 10 kV X-rays. No effect of radiation quality, of fractionation and of protraction was observed. The possibility of protection by L-cysteine and DMSO was tested in cells irradiated with 150 kV X-rays, but no protection effect with respect to cell survival could be demonstrated. Non-DNA radiation-sensitive site(s), possibly the cell membrane, appear to be responsible for interphase death.
