Avian encephalomalacia in Barbados, West Indies: a description of spontaneous field cases with feed analyses.

The clinical, necropsy and histopathological findings in four natural outbreaks of encephalomalacia are reported. Feed analyses implicated low levels of vitamin E as the probable cause of the condition. Treatment with vitamin E has proved to be very effective. The instability of vitamin E in animal feed ingredients during long periods of shipment into the Caribbean may be important in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Prospectively randomised trial of proximal gastric vagotomy either with or without pyloroplasty in treatment of uncomplicated duodenal ulcer.

A consecutive series of 100 men with uncomplicated duodenal ulcer was randomly divided into two groups: one group of 52 underwent proximal gastric vagotomy (PGV), the other group (48) underwent PGV with pyloroplasty (PGVP). Preoperative peak acid output (PAOP) was measured in all patients. Those with a higher preoperative PAOP were significantly more likely to develop recurrent ulceration. Three patients developed recurrent ulceration after PGV and seven after PGVP. Dumping was both more common and more severe after PGVP than PGV. An overall satisfactory result was achieved in 92% after PGV and 81% after PGVP. We conclude that combining pyloroplasty with PGV has no appreciable advantages.

Biological properties of poliovirus encapsulated in lipid vesicles: antibody resistance and infectivity in virus-resistant cells.

We present evidence that poliovirus can be encapsulated in synthetic large phospholipid vesicles. The virus associated with the vesicles is found to be (i) resistant to antiserum against poliovirus and (ii) infectious for cells that are normally resistant to virus infection because of a membrane restriction. Our interpretation of these results is that the virus is entrapped in the interior aqueous space of the vesicles and that this vesicle-associated virus is introduced directly into the cytoplasm of the cells via fusion of the vesicles with the cellular plasma membrane, bypassing the surface receptor-mediated restriction.

Hand skill measurement: a gauge for treatment.

Objective measurements of performance are vital with the increasing necessity to justify the need for occupational therapy services, and to conduct studies that measure the effectiveness of treatment procedures. This paper reports on a measurement of hand skill that was standardized by comparing hand skill performance among the able-bodied, or normal, population. The performance on this test o patients with various types of disabilities and the implications for treatment are discussed. For the paraplegic, the hand skill test indicates the need for occupational therapy services; for the quadriplegic, the test measures the effectiveness of functional orthotic devices; and for the hemiplegic, the hand skill test determines the potential for success in one aspect of self-care, dressing.

Arterial pressures in a general practice.

Systolic and diastolic readings of blood pressure were recorded for 5386 (2585 males and 2801 females) members of a general practice situated in and around Ballycastle, County Antrim. Polynomials to predict blood pressure from age were derived for systolic and diastolic pressures of males and females. Polynomials to predict blood pressure variance from age were derived for both systolic and diastolic pressure of each sex. Age-sex adjusted diastolic and systolic scores were calculated for each of the 5386 members of the practice using a technique similar to that reported by Hamilton et al. (1954 a, b).Parent-child correlations ranging from -0.21 to 0.17 were observed; however, when all sibships were considered together irrespective of size coefficients which were significantly greater than zero generally involved the mother of the child. No sib-sib correlation (all sibship sizes combined), except those involving twins exceeded the value 0.13. Husband-wife correlations were similar to the corresponding parent-offspring correlations when both husband and wife were aged 45 years or more. Generally speaking, the coefficients found in this study were lower than those of other workers and reasons are discussed why the estimates of the present paper may not be unbiased.
