[Estimation of the concentration of urea in the blood of horses, cattle, goats and dogs using the "Merckognost Harnstoff" method compared with an enzymatic, photometric method (author's transl)].

To examine the suitability and reliability in field use of the "Merckognost Harnstoff" method in estimating the concentration of urea in the blood of horses, cattle, goats and dogs, the levels determined by this procedure were compared with those determined by an enzymatic (urease) photometric method widely used in laboratories. It was concluded from the results obtained that estimation using the "Merckognost Harnstoff" is sufficiently reliable for the rapid assay of urea in the blood under field conditions.

[Occurrence, diagnosis and course of chronic hepatitis in weaned lambs of a flock of Texel sheep (author's transl)].

A disease of weaned lambs is described, which is attributable to chronic hepatitis marked by impaired secretion of cholephils in the acute or early stage and by inadequate growth due to persistent dysfunction of the liver during the subsequent or chronic stage. Regardless of its duration, the disease may be diagnosed in the living animal by determining the SDH and gammaGT activity levels, the total serum protein, the serum iron concentration and the serum iron-binding capacity.

Hyperlipoproteinaemia in ponies: mechanisms and response to therapy.

(I) The lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in sera of 4 healthy and 9 hyperlipaemic patients were determined. From the results of the analyses, it is suggested that three types of hyperlipoproteinaemia can be distinguished in ponies: (a) Type 1, characterised by a very pronounced increase in only the very low density lipoproteins (VLDL); (b) Type 2, in which there is a pronounced increase in the chylomicrons (Chylo) and the very low density lipoproteins (VLDL); (c) Type 3, which can be the result of fasting and is characterised by a moderate increase in the concentration of chylomicrons and a greater increase in very low density lipoproteins. It is suggested that hyperlipoproteinaemia in ponies can be classified on the basis of electrophoretic patterns. (II) To gather more information on the metabolism of extra offered lipids, blood from ponies suffering from two different types of hyperlipoproteinaemia was transfused into normal ponies and the changes in lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in the blood serum were followed. The reactions were different. When heparin was used as anticoagulant a great increase in chylomicrons and a significant increase in very low density lipoproteins in a healthy pony was observed. When sodium citrate was used as anticoagulant a clear increase in the VLDL fraction only was noticed.

The effect of undernutrition on haematological and serum biochemical variables in wild boar (Sus scrofa).

The effect of induced long term undernutrition on the blood composition of wild boar was studied. During the first weeks, the activity of plasma alkaline phosphatase decreased, while creatinine concentrations increased, and the ratio urea/creatinine decreased, suggesting a renal mechanism as well as recycling of nitrogenous waste products to conserve nitrogen. During the last weeks, haemoglobin and packed cell volume decreased, suggesting protein or mineral deficiencies, and the ratio urea/creatinine increased, indicating substantial endogenous protein catabolism.
