Smoking-induced body sway and its suppression by periodic saccades.

The effect of cigarette smoking on body sway, the everlasting displacement of the center of gravity while standing upright, was studied and smoking was found to induce an unusual, oscillatory body sway that was higher in frequency and greater in amplitude than that in controls and lasted in general for several minutes after smoking. This characteristic body oscillation was strongly suppressed by periodic, saccadic eye movements. These results suggest that nicotine absorbed into blood during smoking affects the structures in the brain stem related to the regulation of standing posture and the saccadic eye movement.

A 6-year-old boy having hepatocellular carcinoma associated with hepatitis B surface antigenemia.

Hepatocellular carcinoma associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection occurring in a boy who was 6 years 2 months old is reported. The patient is thought to have been infected with HBV by exchange blood transfusion (horizontal infection) in the neonatal period. Jaundice appeared eight months after birth. He was subsequently treated and follow-up with a diagnosis of hepatitis B surface (HBs) antigen (Ag)-positive chronic persistent hepatitis. His mother and other family members were HBsAg-negative. Postmortem examination revealed a multinodular growth of hepatocellular carcinoma of trabecular and solid pattern, mainly of the right lobe, complicated with mild fibrosis of the liver. Numerous HBsAg-positive hepatocytes demonstrated by orcein staining and the indirect immunoperoxidase method were present in the noncancerous area. This hepatocellular carcinoma is considered to have occurred within six years two months after HBV infection and not to have been associated with liver cirrhosis. The present case may be valuable for assessing the oncogenic properties of HBV and the incubation period of HBV infection before it develops into hepatocellular carcinoma.

Application of highly purified anti-galactocerebroside antibody to the analysis of lipid-lipid or lipid-protein interactions. Significance of lipid matrix.

The significance of the lipid matrix in the reaction of liposomal antigen, antibody and complement (Ag-Ab-C) was analyzed using purified anti-glactocerebroside antibody and synthetic lipids and the following results were obtained. 1. For the optimal Ag-Ab-C reaction it was necesary that galactocerebroside (galxCMH) and lecithin molecules were well dispersed by virtue of cholesterol (Chol) and that the molar ratio of cholesterol to the sum of galactocerebroside and lecithin was more than one. 2. The Ag-Ab-C reactivity changed depending upon the chain length of lecithin, and the maximal reaction was observed in the case of dilauroylphosphatidylcholine. When the fatty acyl chain of lecithin was either shorter or longer than that of dilaurosylphosphatidylcholine, the reactivity was reduced. 3. The Ag-Ab-C reactivity was increased by elongation of the fatty acyl chain of galactocerebroside and an abrupt change was found to be around the carbon number 8 to 10 of the fatty acyl chain. 4. The Ag-Ab-C reactivity was elevated by the increase in unsaturation of fatty acyl moiety. 5. There is a tendency that an increase in the charge of the lipid matrix leads to the reduction of the Ag-Ab-C reactivity. 6. The results suggest that the physicochemical properties of lipids and especially the lipid-lipid interaction in the hydrophobic region of the lipid matrix play an important role in the Ag-Ab-C reaction.

Selective embolization of the vesical artery in the management of massive bladder hemorrhage.

Massive bladder hemorrhage was sucessfully treated by selective embolization of the unilateral vesical artery in two patients with vesical neoplasms. In one patient, complete hemostasis was obtained by partial occlusion of the unilateral vesical artery, although the lesion had another feeding vessel from the contralateral artery. This method is simple and effective in controlling massive bladder hemorrhage, as it has the advantages of minimizing ischemic pain, preventing the hazards due to extensive infarction and reflux of embolic material, and reducing tumor bulk.

Presence of reciprocal synapses in the rabbit carotid body.

The synaptic junctions between glomus cells and nerve endings in the rabbit carotid body were studied by electron microscopy. Many of them were morphologically of afferent type, glomus cells being presynaptic to nerve endings; occurrence of efferent synapses was less common than that of afferent synapses. In addition, reciprocal synapses in which two or more junctions of opposite polarity were lying side by side were frequently seen particularly between large nerve endings and glomus cells. Some single synapses were discovered to be part of reciprocal synapses through examination of serial sections. The results support possible participation of dopamine in a modulatory feedback loop through reciprocal synapses in the rabbit carotid body.

Ultrastructural and histochemical studies on the taste buds in some reptiles.

The taste buds in tortoises (Clemmys japonica and Geoclemys reevesii), lizards (Takydromus tachydromoides) and snakes (Elaphe quadrivirgata) were examined by both ultrastructural and histochemical methods. The taste buds consisted of at least three types of cells: the type I, II and III cells. The type I cells were characterized by the presence of secretory dense granules containing polysaccharides which were demonstrated by periodic acid-chromic acid-silver methenamine technique. The type II cells contained numerous tubular, vesicular and lamellated structures. The type III cells were characterized by dense cored vesicles and afferent synaptic contacts. Besides these cells, basally located cells which resembled the basal cells of other lower vertebrates were sometimes found in the tortoises. After administration of L-DOPA following nialamide, some taste bud cells of the tortoises, Clemmys japonica, showed weak yellowish green fluorescence by monoamine fluorescence histochemistry and the dense-cored vesicles in the type III cells increased in number. Acetylcholine esterase activity was not observed in tortoise taste buds. It is suggested that the three types of cells which compose the taste buds of the reptiles may correspond to the three types of cells in mammalian, and the type III cells represent the gustatory cells which are able to potentially produce biogenic monoamines. From these results, the taste buds of the reptiles may hold an intermediate position between those of mammals and amphibia or fishes.

Hemoglobin takamatsu (beta 120 (GH 3) Lys leads to Gln): a new abnormal hemoglobin detected in three unrelated families in the takamatsu area of shikoku.

A survey of hemoglobinopathies which was carried out in the Takamatsu district during the period from January to August 1979 detected six families with abnormal hemoglobins. Approximately 6010 inhabitants were screened. Three of these families had the same new Hb variant (Hb Takamatsu beta 120 Lys leads to Gln) that has not been previously reported. Existence of a blood relationship among these three families could not be established even after careful family studies. This abnormal hemoglobin was not associated with adverse symptoms and gave normal hematologic findings in the carriers. The isopropranol test was negative, oxygen affinity was within the normal range, and biosynthetic ratio in reticulocytes was around 1.0. One of the difficulties in the structural analysis of this hemoglobin was related to complete superposition of abnormal beta XT-12b,13 on a beta T-8,9 peptide in the fingerprint of the trypsin digest of aminoethylated aberrant beta X chain. This was overcome by collection of abnormal tryptic beta core (beta XT-10-13) from unmodified beta X chain, and subsequent digestion by chymotrypsin. Edman analysis of the chymotryptic peptides thus obtained successfully confirmed the substitution to be beta 120 Lys leads to Gln.
