[Effect of regional phase delay on left ventricular performance studied by radionuclide angiography].

When cardiac hypokinesis in myocardial infarction is analyzed by means of phase analysis of radionuclide (RI) angiography, there are some cases in which the amount of regional wall movement of the left ventricle does not so decline, but the phase delay of regional wall movement is great. Hence, a simulation experiment was performed with a computer to evaluate the influences of regional phase delay on cardiac work. It was assumed that the radius of the model of the left ventricle varies from 3 cm in the late diastolic phase to 2 cm in the late systolic phase, and that in the initial 1/3 time of diastole, the radius alters by 90% of the change. One cardiac cycle (360 degrees) was divided into 60 fractions (1 fraction = 6 degrees), 0 degree being the end of diastole and 180 degrees the end of systole. An ischemic area was supposed to cover S% of the whole volume of the left ventricle, its amount of regional wall movement being P% of the normal area, and the phase delay being R degrees. By varying S, P and R, and taking weighted means of volume curves and normal ones, their assumed volume curves of the left ventricle were computed. Stroke volume (SV) and ejection fraction (EF) obtained from these curves were compared to those obtained from the normal curves, and were expressed in percentage (%SV, %EF). The influences of the changes of S, P and R on the volume curve and on the cardiac work were examined. Then the count curves of the left ventricle (LV) were obtained by gated RI angiography in 22 cases of myocardial infarction and 8 healthy controls, and LV regional wall movements were examined by means of the Fourier analysis. The circular volume was partitioned from the center into eight sections on the LV image of LAO 45 degrees, and the amount of wall movement and the phase delay of each section were evaluated from the count curves of each section. The following results were obtained. %SV and %EF declined with sole occurrence of regional phase delay. Occurrence of the regional phase delay flattened the slope of the volume curve of the initial diastolic phase and formed shoulders on this curve. This was observed also on the count curves actually determined from cases with myocardial infarction. When regional wall movement was markedly decreased, the influence of the regional phase delay on the pattern of the volume curve was slight even if the phase delay was extensive.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

[Case of gastric cancer associated with acanthosis nigricans and meningeal carcinomatosis].

The patient was a 61-year-old man who initially complained of skin pigmentation. He was diagnosed as malignant acanthosis nigricans associated with gastric cancer (IIc advanced) in March 1981. Surgical excision of the stomach was performed in May 1981. In July 1981 he experienced headache, vomiting and muscle weakness. A diagnosis of meningeal carcinomatosis was made based on his clinical symptoms, spinal fluid examination and a computerized tomography scan. The intraventricular administration of cytosine arabinoside, methotrexate and hydrocortisone via the Ommaya reservoir resulted in complete remission. In November 1981 the patient died of bronchopneumonia and sepsis due to pancytopenia.

Intracellular protein changes during pentylenetetrazole induced bursting activity in snail neurons.

The intracellular protein changes during pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced bursting activity (BA) which is characteristic of seizure discharge were investigated using microdisk electrophoresis with 5 identified neurons. The identified neurons of the snail, Euhadra peliomphala, were used. The PTZ-sensitive neurons which manifest marked BA by application of PTZ were examined. PTZ induced in PTZ-sensitive neurons: (1) a prominent increase of 5-7 kdalton protein and (2) peak separation into 3 peaks of 10-15 kdalton protein. In the 5-7 and 10-15 kdalton protein, a marked increase in radioactivity of 45Ca was observed after PTZ application. PTZ-non-sensitive neurons showed neither these protein changes nor 45Ca incorporation into these proteins. The above findings suggest that during PTZ-induced BA, intracellular protein changes occurred in relation to the intracellular calcium shift.

Seroepizootiological survey on bluetongue virus infection in cattle in Japan.

Bovine sera collected in various parts of Japan were subjected to seroepizootiological tests with bluetongue virus type 1 (BTV1), type 12 (BTV12), and type 20 (BTV20). All these viruses have been widely disseminated among cattle in the southern part of Japan in 1974. Relatively high incidences of neutralizing (NT) antibody against the three viruses were shown among cattle in the Kyushu district, including Okinawa Prefecture, or the southern part of Japan, but extremely low or incidences in Hokkaido, or the northern part of Japan. The incidence of reactors was higher in old animals. Cattle in Okinawa Prefecture showed a high rate of seroconversion for all the viruses during the summer of 1979. None of the animals seroconverted, however, manifested any sign of disease. Seroepizootiological investigation made it clear that BTV1, BTV12 and BTV20 had existed in Japan and that the epizootic of bluetongue virus infection started during a period from summer through early autumn.

[Effects of 16,16-dimethyl-trans-delta 2-PGE1 methyl ester (ONO-802) on reproductive function (author's transl)].

Effects of ONO-802 on maintenance of pregnancy, luteal function and ovulation were investigated. In pregnant rats, ONO-802 given i.p. showed antinidatory, abortifacient and strong labor-inducing effects with treatment on day 2, after day 17 and on day 21 of gestation, respectively. The abortifacient effect was not apparent when treatment was given from day 4-15. PGE1 had an antinidatory effect, PGF2 alpha had an abortifacient and labor-inducing effects after implantation, and PGE2 had both these effects. PGF2 alpha and PGE2 showed a luteolytic effect in rats, while ONO-802, similarly to the findings with PGE1, had no such effect. In pregnant rabbits, intraperitoneal ONO-802, exhibited antinidatory and abortifacient effects after implantation. Abortifacient effects were more potent with the progression of pregnancy of pregnancy though relatively large doses of ONO-802 were required. A significant decrease in peripheral blood progesterone level was observed in the group on high doses but the abortifacient effect of ONO-802 did not always depend on the decreases in the levels of progesterone. In cycling, spontaneously ovulating rats, the high doses of ONO-802 suppressed spontaneous ovulation when these doses were given two at 14:30 and 15:30 on the day of proestrus. ONO-802 did not inhibit the HCG-induced ovulation and the ovulation suppressed by ONO-802 was recovered by PGE2 or HCG.
