Cyprinids are the largest group of cultured freshwater fish and thus the most important from the aspect of fish-borne parasitic zoonoses. The common practices employed in the culture of this group are described to provide background information which may be used in the formulation of strategies for the control of these zoonoses. Only the common carp is cultured in monoculture: all the rest of the carp species are usually cultured in polyculture systems incorporating several species. Polyculture of cyprinids may be carried out in ponds, cages or in free range culture in natural or man-made water bodies, Polyculture of cyprinids is often integrated with agriculture, such as livestock, poultry or crop farming, utilizing byproducts of the agriculture activity, especially manure, as a source of nutrient for the fish pond. If precautions are not taken, this practice may provide an avenue for the transmission of fish borne parasites to man.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate technetium-99m dextran (99mTc-Dx; molecular weight 81000) as a prospective protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) imaging agent. Twenty-two patients with diseases commonly associated with PLE and 12 healthy control subjects underwent intravenous 99mTc-Dx scintigraphy. All of the 22 test patients showed significant radiotracer accumulation in the intestines within 3-4 h post injection. The focal, regional or generalised nature of the enteropathy and involvement of the large or small intestine could be identified in most cases. Four of the 12 apparently healthy subjects also showed minimal accumulation in the abdominal area occurring late in the study period. This could have been physiological, related to food habits or due to unsuspected intestinal worms. We attribute the high sensitivity of 99mTc-Dx to its relatively fast blood (background) clearance. The radiotracer may have several other advantages over 99mTc-labelled human serum albumin in imaging PLE.
An 18-year-old man underwent surgery for blunt abdominal trauma requiring a total splenectomy. Heterotopic splenic autotransplantation was done in the omentum. Immediate platelets counts, cell morphology, and serum immunoglobulin levels were suggestive of impaired splenic function. Radiolabeled denatured RBC splenic imaging showed evidence of functioning autotransplanted splenic tissue in the omentum. The blood parameters were found to be normal 4 weeks after transplant. Radionuclide denatured RBC imaging has been found to be useful in the localization of functional autotransplanted splenic tissue.
There have been reports of the clearing of sclera that has been grafted into the cornea. This clearing was studied in the rabbit by transplanting full-thickness scleral buttons or by implanting slivers of sclera, both autografts and allografts, into the cornea. Some clearing around the edges of the implanted scleral tissues was observed to take place slowly over the following months. Electron microscopic observation of the borders of either type of graft showed that the collagen fibrils of the sclera were breaking down either by unraveling into smaller fibrils similar in diameter to those of the cornea by fraying into microfibrils. Attracting blood vessels over the scleral slivers did not appear to accelerate the changes. Both active macrophages and fibroblasts could be found in the transitional area.
Intravenously administered dextran is used clinically as a plasma expander. The aim of this study was to assess the use of 99Tcm-dextran in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) blood leaks. Twenty-one patients with GI blood loss underwent 99Tcm-dextran scintigraphy, 17 of whom were found to be positive. Pathologic or 99Tcm-RBC (red blood cell) blood pool correlation was possible in 15 cases, while 2 were unconfirmed. No case had a positive 99Tcm-RBC blood pool study and a negative 99Tcm-dextran study. Images obtained with 99Tcm-dextran were generally better than those with 99Tcm-RBC. This agent may have several other advantages over 99Tcm-RBC blood pool and 99Tcm-sulphur colloid scintigraphy for detecting GI blood loss.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used to evaluate the antinociceptive properties of the selective N-type voltage-sensitive calcium channel (VSCC) blocker, SNX-111, when the compound is administered spinally by either bolus injection or continuous, constant-rate infusion into the subarachnoid space. SNX-111 produced significant, dose-dependent antinociceptive effects by suppressing both the acute (phase 1: ED50, 14 ng/hr) and tonic (phase 2: ED50, 0.82 ng/hr) phases of the formalin test when it was infused for 72 hr immediately before testing. Phase 2 nociceptive responses were suppressed by bolus injections of 100 ng SNX-111. SNX-111 was approximately 1000-fold more potent than morphine in blocking phase 2 responses when the compounds were administered by intrathecal bolus injection. In rats with an experimentally induced painful peripheral neuropathy, intrathecal bolus injections of 30 to 300 ng SNX-111 blocked mechanical allodynia in a dose-dependent manner. Subacute administration of SNX-111 (1, 10 and 100 ng/hr) by continuous intrathecal infusion produced a reversible blockade of mechanical allodynia without apparent development of tolerance. These results show that: 1) selective N-type VSCC blockers are potent and efficacious antinociceptive agents when they are administered by the spinal route; 2) selective N-type VSCC blockers are effective in rat models of acute, persistent and neuropathic pain; and 3) N-type VSCCs play a significant role in the spinal processing of noxious somatosensory input.

A 25 years old male presented with hepatomegaly splenomegaly and fever. He was diagnosed as splenic lymphoma with circulating villous lymphocytes (SLVL) on morphology, cytochemistry and immunocytochemistry performed on peripheral blood and bone marrow smears. Case is being presented because of rarity and unusual presentation at young age.
The authors performed abdominal scintigraphy using intravenously administered Tc-99m dextran in a patient with protein losing enteropathy. The study revealed abnormal leakage of the radiotracer in the left lumber area that moved over time in a pattern suggestive of small intestinal transit. Besides being a nonprotein and having long stay in intravascular compartment, the macromolecule may have many advantages over Tc-99m human serum albumin, the current radiotracer of choice for imaging intestinal protein loss.
One hundred and seventy two strains of beta haemolytic streptococci were isolated from various clinical specimens over a period of one year. Group A was isolated in 69.70% and group C in 16.80 percent. Majority of the strains were isolated during winter season and only 21.00 percent in summer 93.30 percent strains were bacitracin sensitive and all were sensitive to penicillin. The most common T pattern among group A was found to be 5/11/12/27/44 followed by 3/13/B 3264.
