Thirty-six patients with acute leukemia (31 with AML, 5 with ALL) were classified by FAB criteria, and their bone marrow cells were analyzed cytogenetically with G-banding. Chromosomal abnormalities were found in 16 patients (44%). The most common abnormality was an 8;21 translocation, accounting for 19.4% of all AML patients, that was restricted to patients with M2. In 29 treated AML patients, those with an 8;21 translocation [t(8;21) patients] showed a higher complete remission rate (83%) and a longer median survival (10.7 months) than did other patients with AML; patients with only abnormal metaphases (AA patients) had the lowest complete remission rate (33%) and shortest median survival (2.7 months). There was no difference in the remission rate and survival between patients with only normal metaphases (N patients) and patients with abnormal metaphases (A patients). Three out of five patients with ALL had karyotypic abnormalities; the Philadelphia (Ph1) chromosome was found in one case.
The visual toxicity and the ototoxicity of hydrocortisone 17-butyrate 21-propionate (HBP), a newly synthesized anti-inflammatory steroid, was investigated using rats and dogs. (1) Electroretinogram (ERG) and visually evoked potential (VEP) in rats were not changed when HBP was administered intravenously and intraperitoneally, even at the semilethal doses. Consequently, it was suggested that HBP had no effect on the visual nervous system. (2) Similar to other corticosteroids, the intra ocular pressure rose in the dogs received HBP. Nevertheless, these dogs showed neither the remarkable changes in ERG, in the fundus of the eye, in the histological examination, nor the turbidity of the cornea and the lens. Based on these facts, it was reasonable to think that the the rise in the intra ocular pressure caused by HBP was not so severe that induce the secondary influence to other visual functions. (3) The rats received HBP did not show any changes in the auditory function by the audiometry. As the result, HBP was thought to be one of the rather safety corticosteroids concerning the visual toxicity and the ototoxicity.

The liver of rainbow trout contains two hexokinases (ATP:D-hexose 6-phosphotransferase, EC 2.7.1.1) designated C and D from the elution pattern in DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. Hexokinase D has been purified about 50-fold from the liver of rainbow trout by chromatography with DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex G-200, and by isoelectric focusing. The properties of hexokinase D were similar to those of mammalian hexokinase III with respect to the Km values for ATP and glucose and the substrate inhibition by glucose at high concentration. However, the enzyme showed a wide specificity for nucleotides as the phosphoryl donor. Although it has been reported that the only effective nucleotide as the phosphoryl donor for hexokinase from various origin in ATP, and that ADP, a reaction product, inhibits the enzyme, hexokinase D from the rainbow-trout liver was found to be able to form glucose 6-phosphate (Glc-6-P) from glucose and various nucleotides such as ATP, ADP, CTP, GTP, UTP and UDP. The reaction products from ADP and glucose, Glc-6-P and AMP, were identified by chromatography on ion-exchange resin column and paper. The enzyme D was not inhibited by ADP but was strongly inhibited by AMP, which is a reaction product from ADP.
