We succeeded in the separation of AFP-producing cell lines (HH2-1 and HH2-6) and a non-AFP-producing cell line (HH2-4) from cultures of human hepatocellular carcinoma and also succeeded in culturing the AFP-producing cell lines in a serum-independent medium (HHSF). The cells cultured in this medium showed no morphological difference from those cultured in the medium containing serum, and retained growth ability well. Although the protein synthesis of the cells was reduced in the serum-independent medium, they were still able to produce a variety of proteins such as transferrin (TF) and fibronectin (FN) in addition to alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and albumin (ALB).

A streptothricin-like antibiotic, A-269A (referred to as A-269A hereafter) was isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp., strain No. A-269. In this paper, the characterization of the producer, and the production, isolation, physico-chemical properties and biological properties of A-269A are reported. The structure of the antibiotic was also examined by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and fast atom bombardment mass spectra studies. From the spectroscopic data, A-269A was assumed to be a mixture of antibiotic LL-BL 136 and an isomeric compound in which the carbamoyl group is substituted on C-12' hydroxyl instead of C-10 hydroxyl.

A cloned human hepatoma cell line (HH2-1) produced and formed collagen fibers in vitro. The relative rate of collagen synthesis by the cells was increased with an enhancement of the cell density. An analysis of the components of the collagen using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that the cells synthesized interstitial collagen, types I and III, and other collagenous proteins. Thus, human hepatoma cells may play an important role in the formation of stromal collagen in the tumor.
The effect of bile secretion in rats was examined in order to clarify the stomachic action of ginger and also to investigate its active constituents. The results showed that mainly the acetone extracts of ginger, which contain essential oils and pungent principles, caused an increase in the bile secretion. Further analyses for the active constituents of the acetone extracts through column chromatography indicated that [6]-gingerol and [10]-gingerol, which are the pungent principles, are mainly responsible for the cholagogic effect of ginger.

A case of AFP producing rectal cancer was represented in this paper. The patients, 68 years old man, was admitted because of anal bleeding and preoperative examinations revealed rectal cancer without liver metastasis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Serum AFP measured preoperatively was 2750-3500 ng/ml and CEA was 23-33 ng/ml. The patient underwent amputation of the rectum and there were no abnormal masses in the liver at surgery. After operation serum AFP and CEA levels were normalized. Histology of the rectal tumor showed a tubular adenocarcinoma of moderately differentiated type. In the specimen, AFP producing tumor cells were detected by immunoenzymatic labelling (PAP) methods.
