ras oncogenes are cellular genes altered by point mutation in 10 to 30% of human tumors. Under this mutated form they play a role in the malignant process, probably in association with other oncogenes. The different ras genes identified in human cancers, the point mutations that activate the ras genes and the properties of the ras proteins are described.

The possibility of surgery for aged patients with gastric cancer has been studied. Of 484 cases who underwent a gastrectomy, patients 70 years of age or over amounted to 86 (20%). The postoperative mortality rate for these aged patients was 3% and the postoperative mortality rate with hospital deaths added from other causes than operative deaths was 7%. The postoperative mortality rate of aged patients who underwent total or proximal subtotal gastrectomy improved during the period between 1975-1983 compared with the period between 1967-1974. In the second period, there were no deaths among aged patients who underwent an R3-operation and/or a combine operation. This fact shows that operative procedures have become safer for aged patients.

Dynamic sky-line view arthrography at 30, 60, and 90 flexion degrees was carried out on 1,242 knees of 621 cases who claimed trouble with at least one knee. The patient's age range was from 15 to 35 years. Alignment of the patello-femoral joint was classified into four groups; Grade I: The patello-femoral joint is congruent in all the three views. Grade II: The view taken at 30 degrees shows the joint space open in the medial facet but closed in the view at 60 degrees. Grade III: The medial interspace is open at 60 degrees but closed at 90 degrees. Grade IV: The medial joint space is open in all three views. Grade distribution of all cases studied was: Grade I, 62.1%; Grade II, 25.8%; Grade III, 6.7%; and Grade IV, 5.4%. Clinical disorders thus occur at high percentages in the groups of Grades III and IV. Based on this observation, the mechanism of the malalignment disorders of the patello-femoral joint is discussed.

The complete nucleotide sequences of rat M1- and M2-type pyruvate kinase mRNAs were determined by sequencing the cDNAs and by analyses of S1 nuclease mapping and primer extension. The sequences have an identical molecular size of about 2220 nucleotides excluding a poly(A) tail and include 1593-nucleotide coding region. Their nucleotide sequences are identical except for 160-nucleotide sequences within the coding regions. The amino acid sequences of the M1- and M2-type subunits deduced from the cDNA sequences differ by only 45 residues within domain C, which constitutes the main region responsible for intersubunit contact. The sequence of this region of the M2-type shows higher homology than that of the M1-type with the corresponding sequence of the L-type. Since the M2- and L-types are allosteric enzymes, unlike to the M1-type, the residues common to the M2- and L-types, but not the M1-type may be important for mediating the allosteric properties. Genomic clones encoding both M1- and M2-type isozyme mRNAs were isolated. By partial sequence analysis of a clone lambda MPK37 four exons were identified, of which two adjacent exons coded the M1- and M2-specific sequences, respectively. The two remaining exons present downstream coded amino acids common to the two isozymes. Thus, we conclude that the M1- and M2-type isozymes of pyruvate kinase are produced from the same gene probably by alternative RNA splicing.
