[Non-epitherial malignant neoplasms of the breast--a clinicopathological study of 4 cases].

Between 1972 and 1981, 4 women with breast sarcoma underwent treatment at our department; they accounted for 1.1% (4 of 355) of all female breast malignancies. There was one case of malignant lymphoma and liposarcoma each, and 2 cases of malignant cystosarcoma phyllodes. The patients averaged 31.0 years of age. Of the two cases of cystosarcoma phyllodes, one had coexisting lobular carcinoma in situ arising in a fibroadenoma of the contralateral breast, the other had a coexisting lung cancer. Mastectomy was performed in 3 cases, irradiation in one (malignant lymphoma). All patients received concurrent chemotherapy. The regional lymph nodes were not involved, and 2 patients are alive and well without recurrence.

[Value of contrast-enhanced CT scan in prediction of development of contusional hemorrhage].

It is often experienced that even if there are no significant findings on the initial plain CT scan in the patient with cerebral contusion, the patient has thereafter a serious clinical course and requires emergency operation for so-called contusional hemorrhage. In order to predict of the development of contusional hemorrhage we performed contrast-enhanced CT scan at the time of patient's arrival within 12 hours after injury, if there was cerebral contusion on 24 hours after the contrast-enhanced CT scan. If enhancement was demonstrated on the contrast-enhanced CT scan, we predicted the development of contusional hemorrhage and if not demonstrated, we predicted no more development of contusional hemorrhage and then we studied the correlation between the prediction and the plain CT 24 hours after the contrast-enhanced CT scan. The results were as follows: 1) The prediction was correct in 13 cases out of 16 cases in which the development of contusional hemorrhage was observed. In 18 cases where no development of contusional hemorrhage was observed, the prediction was correct without exception. 2) Most of the cases in which enhancement was demonstrated were ones examined not before 3 hours after injury. 3) The extent of enhancement shown on contrast-enhanced CT scan was well consistent with that of contusional hemorrhage on the plain CT scan 24 hours after the contrast-enhanced CT scan. From these results, the contrast-enhanced CT scan in acute stage of head injury was considered to by very useful in prediction of the development of contusional hemorrhage.

[Effects of extracorporeally induced systemic hyperthermia on cell-mediated immunity].

We have studied the effects of extracorporeally induced systemic hyperthermia on cell-mediated immunity in 12 patients. Also, the effect of heating and anti-cancer drugs on ADCC activity 3 Plaque forming method and 51Cr release method) and NK activity (51Cr release method. target: K-562 cells) of normal human lymphocytes was studied in vitro. The following results were obtained: Lymphocytes, T-cells and IgGFcR+ T-cells counts slightly decreased during the hyperthermotherapy in patients. During initiation of the hyperthermotherapy (Rectal temp. 41.6-41.8 degrees), ADCC activity, PHA, and Con-A induced lymphocyte blastogenesis were slightly depressed, while NK activity was slightly enhanced. At the end of the hyperthermia, ADCC activity, lymphocyte blastogenesis and NK activity were extremely depressed. In vitro, 1 hour of heating at more than 40 degrees C extremely depressed ADCC activity. By heating at 42 degrees C, ADCC activity was depressed depending on heating time, while NK activity was slightly enhanced for the first 10 minutes and then depressed depending on heating time. The administration of anti-cancer drugs (MMC, 5-FU, ADM) did not affect NK activity at all during the heating at 42 degrees C. From these results, it is highly suggested that immunopotentiators should be used during extracorporeally induced systemic hyperthermia in order to make up for the depressed cell-mediated immunity.

[Epidemiologic study of breast fluid in Japanese women].

Breast fluid was collected from 805 Japanese women using a negative-pressure breast-pump procedure. All subjects were non-lactating; there were 275 breast cancer patients and 530 healthy women. Women who secreted 20 microliters or more were classified as "secretors" (290/805, 36%); those who secreted less than 20 microliters to as "non-secretors". Breast cancer patients showed a significantly higher incidence of secretion, particularly in the diseased breast, than healthy women. Among secretors, the risk for breast cancer was high in those with earlier menarche, unmarried women, those with a smaller number of pregnancies and children and those with older age at their first delivery.

Application of pulsed-gradient 31P NMR on frog muscle to measure the diffusion rates of phosphorus compounds in cells.

Pulsed-gradient 31P NMR was used to measure the diffusion rates of phosphorus compounds in aqueous solution and in living muscles. The diffusion rates of creatine phosphate and inorganic phosphate in intact frog muscle cells were reduced by a factor of approximately 2 from those in aqueous solution, which suggests that the apparent intracellular viscosity is approximately 2 times larger than in aqueous solution.
