Angiomatous lesions of glans penis.

Two patients with an angiomatous lesion of the glans penis are presented. These lesions are rare and difficult to distinguish from the spongiosum tissue. There is much controversy concerning their true nature, i.e., whether they represent a true neoplasm, herniation of the corpus spongiosum, or vascularization of a hematoma or thrombus. The present lesions were not true neoplasms, but are best described as malformative lesions.

Carcinoma of the maxillary sinus with eosinophilia. Report of a case.

A patient with carcinoma of the maxillary sinus presented with a blood eosinophilia and infiltration of eosinophilic leukocytes into the tumor tissue. Immediately after cancer therapy with intraarterial infusion of 5-fluorouracil into the superficial temporal artery, necrotomy and resection of the maxilla including radical neck dissection, the number of eosinophilic leukocytes was suddenly decreased and thereafter a transient increase in blood eosinophilic leukocyte count was observed. In this communication, a tentative mechanism for these events is suggested.

Characterization of solubilized products from the cell wall of Streptococcus pneumoniae during autoplast formation.

The structure of the cell wall of Streptococcus pneumoniae R36a was investigated by means of chemical analysis of the solubilized products formed during autoplast formation. By autoplast formation, almost all of the cell wall components were solubilized as the end products within several hours. Analysis of the solubilized products revealed that the pneumococcal cell wall consists of three macromolecular components, teichoic acid-glycopeptide I (TA-GP I), teichoic acid-glycopeptide II (TA-GP II), and glycopeptide (GP-III). The molecular size of TA-GP I was larger than that of TA-GP II. TA-GP I and TA-GP II were constituted of similar components, galactosamine, 2-acetamido-4-amino-2, 4, 6-trideoxyhexose, glucose, ribitol, choline, phosphate, and peptidoglycan components, but the ratio of teichoic acid to glycopeptide in TA-GP II was higher than that in TA-GP I. TA-GP II was solubilized more slowly than TA-GP I and GP III during autoplast formation. The assembly of the cell wall by TA-GP I and II, and GP III is discussed in connection with the action of autolysin.

Pd-Co dental casting ferromagnetic alloys.

Three kinds of Pd-Co alloys have been newly developed. Their magnetic and physical properties and corrosion resistances have been examined. As a result, it was found that they are available as the dental casting ferromagnetic alloy which can be used in combination with Sm-Co magnets, overcoming such problems as non-castability and brittleness.

Clinical study on increased serum thyroxine-binding globulin in cancerous state.

Serum thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) in 169 patients with various cancers was determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Eleven patients showed a high serum TBG level (greater than 35 micrograms/ml). Two of them had been treated with estrogen for prostate cancer. One patient had high serum TBG with serum hepatitis. Another 8 cases had normal liver function and also normal levels serum estrogen. Thus, about 4.7% (8/169) of the cancer patients had high serum TBG and mild hyperthyroxinemia caused by unknown mechanisms. The high TBG level in these patients continued until just before death, or in some cases decreased to normal after removal of cancer tumors by operation. Cancer is occasionally associated with an increase in serum TBG. Although the mechanism is not clear, the increased TBG in the cancerous state in interesting and has significance as a tumor marker.

Cardiac death and myocardial lesions in non-stroke SHRSP under specific pathogen-free system.

The most remarkable finding in SHRSP with cardiac death under specific pathogen-free system was idiopathic diffuse fatty degeneration of the myocardium. Besides fatty degeneration, diffuse myocardial fibrosis and scattered infarction were observed. In male rats the incidence of cardiac death increased with each generation. Therefore, this myocardial degeneration seemed to be hereditary disorder. The SHRSP with cardiac death seemed to be a new type of SHR, namely Heart-Prone SHR (SHRHP). SHRHP may be a kind of animal model for congestive cardiomyopathy (COCM) in human beings.

Genetic and clinical studies of serum beta 2-microglobulin levels in haematological malignancies.

Sera from 244 patients with haematological malignancies were examined for beta 2-microglobulin (beta 2m) levels. There were 142 leukaemias, 32 malignant lymphomas, three immunoblastic lymphomas, two pseudolymphomas and 65 multiple myelomas. Culture supernatants from various established cell lines were also tested. The phenotype facilitating beta 2m shedding from the cell surface appeared to be independent of the specific IgG heavy chain allotypes; however, a myeloma group with normal serum beta 2m levels showed a significant association with the specific Gm allotypes. The determination of serum beta 2m levels can provide valuable information on the proliferative stage of the disorders, the effectiveness of chemotherapy, and be a diagnostic aid for blastic crisis in chronic myelocytic leukaemias, and for subtyping lymphoid malignancies.

Immunoglobulin G heavy-chain allotypes as possible genetic markers for human cancer.

Serum samples from 343 unrelated, healthy Japanese, 194 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive healthy carriers, 96 patients with primary hepatoma, 91 patients with lung cancer, 94 patients with breast cancer, and 87 patients with gastric cancer were examined for IgG heavy-chain allotypes (Gm). The Gm phenotypes of the sera from patients with breast cancer exhibited a distribution similar to that of the normal controls. However, compared to that of normal controls, the Gm phenotype (1,2,21,13,15,16) was significantly increased in the patients with primary hepatoma(chi 2 (1) = 15.12, corrected P less than 0.01) and in the patients with lung cancer (chi 2 (1) = 10.97, corrected P less than 0.05). Compared to that of normal controls, the haplotype Gm 1,2,21 was significantly increased in the patients with primary hepatoma (chi 2 (1) = 22.34, corrected P less than 0.01). Increased frequency of Gm 1,2,21 in primary hepatoma was also significant compared to that of HBsAg-positive healthy carriers (chi 2 (1) = 9.25, corrected P less than 0.05).

Velopharyngeal closure in patients with facial paralysis: the fiberscopic examination of the velopharyngeal movements.

The present study was intended to clarify the role of the facial nerve in velopharyngeal movement and to determine the pathway of the facial nerve innervating the muscles related to velopharyngeal closure in man. Velopharyngeal function in 100 patients with idiopathic peripheral facial paralysis was analyzed using the nasopharyngeal fiberscope (NPF) and neuro-otological examinations. Lack of velopharyngeal closure was observed during Japanese isolated vowels and vowels in consonant-vowel (CV) syllables in patients with facial paralysis. Velopharyngeal opening was found in 85.7% of the subjects with suprastapedial paralysis and in 22.2% of those with infrastapedial paralysis. The facial nerve seemed to affect velopharyngeal movement, at least during vowel productions, through the greater petrosal nerve. Velopharyngeal closure in swallowing and blowing was always demonstrated. Hypernasality during connected speech was not heard in these patients.
