A total of 20 hospitalized patients underwent orthopedic surgery in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Hospital during the period from December 1981 to March 1982. These patients were treated with cefoxitin, mainly, for the prevention of postoperative infections. The following clinical findings were obtained. 1. Out of the 20 patients, 14 were judged 'good' and 6 'fair'. 2. No side effects were reported by the patients or were evident in the clinical data. 3. These clinical results indicated that cefoxitin is a very effective antibiotic for the prevention of postoperative infections in orthopedic surgery.

A radioimmunoassay was developed for the direct quantification of aldolase A in human serum. The method is a double antibody radioimmunoassay using radioiodinated aldolase A4 homopolymer as ligand, chicken antibodies to aldolase A, and rabbit antibodies to chicken IgG. The lowest measurable amount by this method was 2 ng (0.01 U). The radioimmunoassay was shown to be specific for the aldolase A subunit, with no cross-reactivity with human aldolase B subunits or homopolymeric human aldolase C (C4). The immunoreactive aldolase A in the sera of 41 normal healthy subjects ranged from 130 to 210 ng/ml (0.81-1.31 U/1), with a mean of 171 /+- 39 ng/ml.

After HRP injection into the geniohyoid muscle labeled neurons were found in the ventral part of the hypoglossal nucleus, extending in the rostral two-thirds (about) of this nucleus. After HRP injection in to the thyrohyoid muscle, the labeled neurons were identified in the lateral part of the caudal one-third (about) of the hypoglossal nucleus and in the dorsomedial part of the ventral horn of C1.
Transformed epithelial cells were isolated by using tissue culture techniques from an irradiated human submandibular salivary gland which showed no neoplastic lesion. These cells, carrying colony-forming ability in semisolid agar, formed a semiconfluent monolayer with occasional tubular arrangement. All transformed clones were demonstrated by electron microscopic examination to be only one type of cells having fine structure similar to intercalated duct cells. Of six clones isolated, one clone with stable growth was cultured within the sponge matrix, resulting in formation of duct-like structure with mucinous eosinophilic substance. Moreover, inoculation of the cloned cells into nude mice resulted in a production of adenocarcinoma with solid and trabecular pattern. These findings indicate that a human intercalated duct cell line carrying tumorigenicity is established from a human submandibular salivary gland with an exposure to irradiation.

Following horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injection into the cephalopharyngeal muscle (CeP), the hyopharyngeal muscle (HP), the thyropharyngeal muscle (TP), the cricopharyngeal muscle (CP) and the cervical esophagus muscle (CE) of the cat, labeled neurons were identified in the nucleus retrofacialis and the rostral part of the nucleus ambiguus ipsilaterally. The rostral end of the labeled cell column was located more rostrally for CeP and HP than for TP, CP and CE. No difference was noted within the former two or within the latter three. The level of the caudal end of the labeled cell column became more caudal in the order of CeP, HP, TP and CP. The caudal end was located more rostral for CE than for TP. The neurons for CE were located more ventro-laterally than those for the other muscles.

Vestibular disorders were found in all 33 Japanese men who had been drinking alcohol for over 20 years and who had abstained from alcohol for over 3 months before the tests were done. Six, 12, and 15 patients showed peripheral, central, and combined types of vestibular disorders, respectively. The peripheral disorder occurred in younger alcoholics (under 50 years old) with a drinking history of 20-30 years, and the combined disorder in older patients with a longer drinking history. The vestibular disorders, however, were not observed in any of 16 control non-alcoholics. A follow-up study on seven alcoholics with a 3-year abstinence from alcohol revealed an improvement of vestibular dysfunctions, in particular of peripheral disorders, with an abstinence of over 2 years.
