[Operated case of cerebral venous angioma with early venous filling on cerebral angiography--case report].

A 34-year-old woman had a generalized convulsion of sudden onset on April 30, 1985. The next day, she suffered a reattack of generalized convulsion. She was admitted to Kokura Memorial Hospital on May 13, 1985, and was found to have intracerebral hemorrhage on CT-scan then, underwent surgical procedure. Based on cerebral angiographic findings and histological examination, the diagnosis of cerebral venous angioma was done. Cerebral venous angioma is a relatively rare vascular malformation. Its characteristic angiographic findings are a normal arterial phase and a local network of small vein that converged centrally into a single large vein. However, this present case of venous angioma in the left frontal lobe with hematoma showed not only characteristically enlarged medurally vein, but also early venous filling. The literature of operated venous angioma with early venous filling of the brain are reviewed and discussed.

The ultrastructural observation of a case of lymphomatoid papulosis.

Electron microscopic studies of biopsy specimens from a patient with lymphomatoid papulosis were performed. In the epidermis, infiltrating lymphoid cells, many of which had highly convoluted nuclei, were revealed to come into close contact to increased Langerhans' cells but did not accumulate to form microabscesses. In the dermis, Langerhans' cells with rather small numbers of Birbeck granules were scattered among the thick infiltration of mononuclear cells showing close apposition with lymphoid cells. Some macrophages contacted the Langerhans' cells and lymphoid cells were also observed. On one occasion, a Langerhans' cell clinged by a lymphoid cell in the uppermost dermis was revealed to expand the cytoplasm through the ruptured basal lamina touching another lymphoid cell in the epidermis.

Migratory waterfowl as flying reservoirs of Yersinia species.

Intestinal contents of tufted ducks and faecal samples from two other species of migratory birds were examined for Yersinia species of organisms. From 296 tufted ducks Yersinia species were isolated from 10 (3.4 per cent), from 223 swans Yersinia species were recovered from eight (3.6 per cent) but none were recovered from the faeces of 121 pintail ducks. Since the isolates differed from each other in their biochemical characteristics and, or, O serotypes, yersinia infection in these migratory waterfowl seemed to be sporadic.

[Clinical study of phase analysis by RI multigated method].

Phase analysis using RI multigated method was performed in 32 patients with various conditions including right and left bundle branch blocks (RBBB and LBBB), myocardial infarction, WPW syndrome, QT prolongation syndrome, atrioventricular (A-V) dissociation, valvular heart disease, and others. Pixel numbers were plotted into the histogram regarding the one cardiac cycle as 360 degrees. Standard deviation (S.D.) of a phase was calculated from the histogram in order to quantify asynchrony of the ventricles. Results were as follows: 1. Phase analysis was useful as a parameter of asynchrony. 2. There was a close negative correlation between left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and S.D. of a phase. (r = -0.86, n = 32, p less than 0.001) 3. A marked time lag was observed in the infarcted area, and its value was mild in RBBB and LBBB. 4. A time lag between right and left ventricles was diminished or slightly reversed in the cases of RBBB with left anterior hemiblock compared to the cases of lone RBBB. 5. No significant changes were observed in other heart diseases with phase analysis.

Induction of sporulation by inhibitory purines and related compounds.

Sporulation of Bacillus subtilis can be induced, in the presence of excess ammonia, glucose and phosphate, by many purine derivatives under conditions of partial growth inhibition. Some of the compounds are known inhibitors of purine nucleotide synthesis. For most compounds the effect is counteracted by adenine and guanine. Partial growth inhibition by amethopterin (methotrexate) causes sporulation in the absence of purines but not in their presence. Unable to induce sporulation at any concentration are inhibitors of DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis as well as base or amino acid analogs that are incorporated into these polymers.

Studies on quinoline derivatives and related compounds. 5. Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of novel 1-alkoxy-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids.

A series of novel 1-alkoxy-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acids was synthesized and screened as antimicrobial agents. The most active compounds in vitro against gram-negative microorganisms and Staphylococcus aureus were 1,4-dihydro-1-methoxy-6,7-methylenedioxy-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid (22), 1,2,6,9-tetrahydro-6-methoxy-9-oxofuro[3,2-f]quinoline-8-carboxylic acid (30, and 2,3,6,9-tetrahydro-6-methoxy-3-methyl -2,9-dioxothiazolo [5,4-f]quinoline-8-carboxylic acid (34). These compounds had antigram-negative activity comparable to that of the corresponding N-ethyl derivatives 1, 2, and 4. Their serum levels and urinary recovery rates in rats, however, were significantly improved relative to the latter compounds (1,2, and 4).

Sinus pericranii.

Five cases of sinus pericranii are presented, four congenital and one traumatic. All five cases were successfully treated with extirpation and reinforcement with Gelfoam and silk thread over the skull openings. The literature on this rare symptom-complex is reviewed and a new definition of sinus pericranii proposed.
