Six cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) were diagnosed in residents of Bermuda in the 7-year period 1966-1972. While epidemiologic study revealed no history of common environmental exposures, two of the six cases occurred in adult sibs from a family in which a third adult sib developed NPC in 1963. These three cases were from a large, possibly in-bred Portuguese family with origins in the Azores Islands. The remaining four cases were all in black children ages 10-15; two of these were first cousins. These observations suggest the possibility that genetic influence may contribute to the etiology of NPC.
Factors in the queous humor capable of increasing the random migration and chemotaxis of monocytes were demonstrated during experimental uveitis in the rabbit. Injection of endotoxin-free human serum albumin into the vitreous produced a severe inflammation detectable after 7 days and maximal between 12 to 21 days. Aqueous humor was measured for chemotactic activity with a modified Boyden chamber, which permitted the use of volumes of less than 0.025 ml. Chematactic activity was measurable during the primary inflammation and remained elevated for a short period of time after clinical inflammation and anterior chamber cellular reaction had decreased. A severe reinduction uveitis could be initiated by the intravenous injection of human serum albumin after day 30. Chemotactic factors could be measured at high titers by 8 h after this intravenous challenge.
A new study of specimens of paromomyid and microsyopid primates clarifies evolution in these primates and reuslts in new concepts of each family. The paromomyid Phenacolemur and its former synonym, Ignacius, are distinct genera, each with new Early Wasatchian species, Plesiolestes, Palaechthon, Torrejonia, Palenochtha, Navajovius, Micromomys, and Tinimomys are removed from the Paromomyidae and transferred to the Microsyopidae. The Plesiadapiformes are classified in three groups which may be differentiated on incisor and molor structure: Plesiadapoidea (Plesiadapidae, Carpolestidae, and Saxonellidae), Microsyopidae, and Paromomyidae. The Paromomyidae, Microsyopidae (and its two subfamilies), and several genera are rediagnosed in the light of new comparative evidence.

Clark, Harold W. (The George Washington University, Washington, D.C.), Jack S. Bailey, Richard C. Fowler, and Thomas McP. Brown. Identification of Mycoplasmataceae by the fluorescent antibody method. J. Bacteriol. 85:111-118. 1963.-The conditions of the fluorescent antibody reactions were studied in relation to their application to Mycoplasmataceae or pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO). Mycoplasma hominis type 1 and 2 antigens and their homologous antisera were used to determine the activity and specificity of these and other strains. Fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugated antiserum globulin preparations were used in both the direct and indirect fluorescent antibody methods. A direct tube technique was used for the detection and measurement of growth in broth cultures by the addition of conjugated antiserum. The specific fluorescent staining and recognition of hot water fixed M. hominis colonies was presented as a suitable identification standard. The antigenic activity was found to remain in the insoluble residue after exposure of M. hominis strains to sonic vibration (9 kc) for 30 min and centrifugation. Brief 2-min exposures of tissue cells to vibration (9 kc) caused the disruption of tissues, with the release of viable and "bound" nonwashable strains that reacted specifically with fluorescent antibody. It is proposed to apply both the sonic vibration and the fluorescent antibody techniques for the identification of Mycoplasmataceae in human tissues.
Bailey, Jack S. (George Washington University, Washington, D. C.), Harold W. Clark, William R. Felts, Richard C. Fowler, and Thomas McP. Brown. Antigenic properties of pleuropneumonia-like organisms from tissue cell cultures and the human genital area. J. Bacteriol. 82:542-547. 1961.-Antigens were prepared from several tissue culture and human genital strains of pleuropneumonia-like organisms (PPLO) by a method utilizing continuous agitation of the incubating cultures. Antisera were produced in rabbits by intravenous injection of suspensions of these organisms standardized turbidimetrically. The antigenic properties of the selected strains were compared by agglutination techniques supplemented by a test based upon the inhibition of growth of PPLO by specific antisera. The majority of tissue culture strains of PPLO studied, including contaminants from several HeLa cell lines, appeared to be antigenically similar to the human type 1 strains. However, one strain (Sp-1) from a HeLa cell line was found to be related to the human type 2 PPLO.

We administered dipyridamole, an adenosine reuptake inhibitor, to 12 outpatients with DSM-III-R anxiety disorders (2 patients with generalized anxiety disorder, 10 patients with panic disorder). Dipyridamole was administered at a flexible dose in a single-blinded fashion following a placebo washout phase and elimination of placebo responders. The mean duration of active treatment with dipyridamole was 46 days (range 21-88 days); the mean peak dose of dipyridamole was 202 +/- 55 mg/day (range 100-300 mg/day). Symptom ratings were completed at regular intervals by the patient and by a research nurse unaware of the treatment condition. Clinically significant improvement in anxiety symptoms was not demonstrated. The implications of these findings for an adenosinergic dysfunction model of panic disorder are discussed.
Renal failure is associated with many subtle, and several distinct, alterations in neuropsychiatric function. This review describes the clinical findings, the treatments, and the known pathophysiology of the neuropsychiatric effects of renal failure.
