Effects of enflurane anaesthesia and surgery on endocrine function in man.

Forty-five patients underwent enflurane anaesthesia and surgery. Anaesthesia alone evoked little change in the plasma concentrations of ACTH, cortisol or antidiuretic hormone (ADH), but there were significant increases during surgery. The plasma levels of aldosterone rose during anaesthesia alone, and a further increase was noted during surgery. Neither enflurane anaesthesia nor surgery significantly influenced plasma concentrations of renin activity and thyroxine. A significant decrease in the plasma triiodothyronine levels was detected during anaesthesia alone, and a further decrease was found during and following surgery. Enflurane anaesthesia did not affect the plasma level of luteinizing hormone (LH) in male subjects throughout surgery, but a significant decrease was detected in female patients on the first postoperative day. The plasma concentrations of testosterone decreased during anaesthesia alone and surgery, and a further decrease was noted on the first postoperative day.

Polymorphism of red cell glutamic-pyruvic transaminase in Japanese: gene frequencies in samples from Northern Japan.

The genetic polymorphism of red cell GPT was investigated by starch-gel electrophoresis in four samples from northern Japan including a sample of the Ainu of Hokkaido. The distribution of the Gpt1 gene frequencies among 10 samples excluding the Ainu so far examined showed heterogeneity. The geographical cline of Gpt1 gene frequency reported in southern Japan was not observed in northern Japan.

Successively transplanted canine transmissible sarcoma.

Canine transmissible sarcoma has been maintained since 1967 as an allogeneic tumor cell line. The tumor originated from a naturally occurring venereal sarcoma in a 7-year-old female dog, Hokkaido-ken. The animals used for the serial transfer from 1st to 50th passages were 1- to 8-month-old puppies. Histological features and karyological characteristics of the tumor were not modified by the passive transfer. In most of the dogs, the palpable growths in the subcutaneous tissues were present at approximately the same time. These findings suggest that the sarcoma is an only established tumor cell line in dogs.

Vein graft bypass in treatment of giant aneurysm.

A case of giant internal carotid artery aneurysm which was successfully treated by trapping and internal decompression of the aneurysm is presented. Proximal vascular occlusion of the involved internal carotid artery and long vein bypass graft were performed under hypothermia. This is the first long vein bypass graft reported for the treatment of a giant aneurysm.

Esterase D phenotypes in North-eastern Japan.

Esterase D (EsD) was typed in 2,367 unrelated healthy blood donors from Yamagata and Miyagi districts, north-eastern area of Japan. The gene frequencies observed were: EsD1 = 0.642, EsD2 = 0.358. In these blood donors two rare EsD phenotypes, EsD 3-2 and a new variant, were found. As for this new variant, the mode of hereditary transmission was discussed by family study.

Significance of pathognomonic features of normal-pressure hydrocephalus on computerized tomography.

In some patients with congenital or acquired hydrocephalus, a low-density area is seen around the lateral ventricle on computerized tomography. Above all, in patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus following subarachnoid hemorrhage, there appears a specific low-density area which is fan-shaped and irregular and which extends from the bilateral anterior horns to the frontal pole. This disappears or decreases with a VP shunt. Improvement of clinical symptoms is proportional to the degree of disappearance of the low-density area. The essential part of the occurrence of symptoms in patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus depends upon a low-density area on CT.

Left ventricular function studies in constrictive pericarditis.

Left ventricular function studies were performed on five patients with constrictive pericarditis. Functional data were obtained from intracardiac pressure measurements and cineangiocardiographic films. Left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV), left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV), ejection fraction (EF), stroke work index (SWI), circumferential fiber shortening, and percent circumferencial shortening were significantly below normal values in the five cases. These changes are reflected mainly in the degree of pericardial restriction. Reduction in mean Vcf was also observed. Theoretically, the velocity of ventricular internal circumferential shortening is also affected by changes in ventricular volume or resting myocardial fiber length, however, in patients with constrictive pericarditis, reduction in mean Vcf suggests left ventricular dysfunction. Our clinical studies indicate that evaluation of mean Vcf is valuable in the assessment of postoperative prognoses.

A greatly simplified method of establishing B-lymphoblastoid cell lines.

Ten lymphoblastoid cell lines were established by Epstein-Barr virus-induced transformation directly from 0.04 to 0.15 ml of peripheral whole blood of one patient with xeroderma pigmentosum and four normal healthy adults. All these lines expressed B-lymphocyte characteristics. The advantages of this method are: (a) only a few drops of blood are required for establishing a permanent line; (b) damage and loss of cells in separation procedures are minimal; and (c) the method is simple, reliable, and applicable, if desired, to any patient, even babies.
