The effect of medium chain glyceride on the rectal absorption of cefmetazole sodium is investigated using an in situ experiment in rats. Each glyceride component of medium chain glyceride was separated using a high-performance liquid chromatographic method. The promoting effect of medium chain glyceride was found to be mainly due to glycerylmonocaprylate and dependent on the concentration of glycerylmonocaprylate. When cefmetazole sodium in medium chain glyceride solution was administered into the rectal lumen of rats, rapid absorption of the drug was observed leading to a residual amount of about 45% at 15 min after administration. The promoting effect of medium chain glyceride was found to be more effective in the rectum than in the small intestine.

The effect of aspirin on the prostacyclin (PGI2) production of rat aorta was investigated, and the influence of sex hormones on the effect of aspirin was studied by the treatments of hormone administration, ovariectomy and castration. There was no significant sex difference in the arterial production of PGI2 between male and female rats. However, the PGI2 production was decreased with aspirin treatment, and the effect of aspirin was more efficient in male rats. The inhibitory effect of aspirin was reduced in the rats treated with estradiol and the castrated male rats, but it was potentiated in the rats treated with testosterone and the ovariectomized female rats. These results suggest that sex hormones may regulate the effect of aspirin on the PGI2 production in the aorta.

We have previously reported the leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) factor in cancer patients, which is one of the specific parameters of cell mediated immunity. Since interpretation of these results was sometimes difficult in human cancer because of the unknown participation in the reaction, the inbred mouse strains were used as an experimental animal. We studied how the LMI factor of murine spleen cells changed with immunization of tumor cells, and intraperitoneal injection of protein polysaccharide (PSK) and/or cyclophosphamide (CPA). Method. LMI was performed by Clausen's method. Mouse strain; C3H/Heston. Tumors; C3M2 (methylcholanthrene induced tumor) and MAC (spontaneous mammary tumor). Result. Migration cells of murine spleen cells were almost granulocytes. Migration inhibition was maximum in 2 to 3 weeks after immunization of tumor cells. In vivo studies as well as in vitro studies revealed that C3M2 and MAC were not crossreactive. Migration was accelerated with CPA and inhibited with PSK. Leukocyte migration was inhibited by injection of PSK after treatment of CPA at a dose of 50 mg/kg, while in the case of CPA at a dose of 200 mg/kg, preinjection of PSK inhibited leukocyte migration.
Three operated cases of congenital deficiency of factor XIII (fibrin-stabilizing factor) associated with intracranial hematomas were described and the diagnosis, replacement therapy of the factor were discussed. Congenital deficiency of factor XIII is quite rare coagulation disorder and only 100 patients were reported in the literatures in which we could find only one case who had craniotomy for associated intracranial hemorrhage. Case 1: A 41-year-old female with the history of unknown hemorrhagic diathesis complained of headache and right hemiparesis on August 2, 1980. CT scan showed left parietal intracerebral hematoma caused by unknown hemorrhagic diathesis and operated on under fresh blood transfusion. Postoperative state was uneventful but bleeding from the operated wound and rebleeding in the operated hematoma cavity were found on 5th postoperative day. The screening test for factor XIII was abnormal but replacement therapy with fresh plasma and factor XIII failed to control hemorrhagic diathesis. The patients died of GI bleeding and recurrent intracerebral hematoma on 21st postoperative day. Case 2: A 1.4-year-old boy with the history of umbilical bleeding on delivery and diagnosed as congenital deficiency of factor XIII in the other hospital fall down and struck his occiput on September 20, 1980. He vomited and became stuporous two days after injury, and was transferred to Ryukyu University Hospital. CT can revealed epidural hematoma at the left posterior fossa which extended to the supratentorium. The hematoma was successfully evacuated under infusion of fresh plasma and he showed uneventful recovery without rebleeding by postoperative appropriate replacement therapy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Anastomosis of the superior thyroid artery to the cervical vertebral artery was performed with good results in a case of vertebrobasilar insufficiency caused by proximal occlusion of the vertebral artery. As a donor artery the superior thyroid artery is moderate in size, long, and easy to anastomose. It is emphasized that this cervical procedure is simpler and safer than the intracranial procedures. The authors believe this case to be the first in which the superior thyroid artery was used as a donor artery for anastomosis to the vertebral artery.
Eight samples of a polysaccharide schizophyllan ranging in weight-average molecular weight Mw (in water) from 5 x 10(3) to 1.3 x 10(5) were prepared and their antitumor activity (expressed in terms of the tumor inhibition ratio) against Sarcoma 180 ascites, intrinsic viscosities [eta], and gel-filtration chromatograms in aqueous solution were determined. The tumor inhibition ratio was essentially unity for samples with Mw higher than 9 x 10(4), but reduced to zero or even to a negative value when Mw was lower than 10(4). The [eta] data combined with the chromatographic data showed that above Mw approximately 9 x 10(4) the predominant species of schizophyllan in aqueous solution is the previously found rigid triple helix, whereas below Mw approximately 9 x 10(4) both triple helices and single chains coexist in the solution and the fraction of triple helices decreases monotonically to zero as Mw is decreased to 5 x 10(3). From these findings it was concluded that the antitumor potency of schizophyllan in water is related to the amount of triple helices relative to that of single chains.
