The growth of transplanted tumors was strongly inhibited in syngeneic Wistar King Aptekman (WKA) rats immunized with allogeneic tumor cells from Donryu rats. This phenomenon of non-specific immunity against tumors is referred to as "allogeneic cell immunity". However, an exception to the "allogeneic cell immunity" was observed in leukemias and lymphomas. Four transplanted leukemia or lymphoma lines were not inhibited in syngeneic rats immunized with allogenic tumor cells. Furthermore, immunization with allogeneic leukemic cells had only a relatively weak inhibitory effect upon a syngeneic fibrosarcoma and no inhibitory effect upon leukemias. In WKA rats immunized with allogeneic lymphoid cells from Donryu rats, the growth of fibrosarcoma, but not of lymphoma, was inhibited. Using transplantation experiments, both fibrosarcoma and lymphoma were defined as antigenic tumors in WKA rats. Transplantation of mixtures of syngeneic tumor cells and allogeneic tumor cells in WKA rats confirmed the above findings. These results revealed that leukemia and lymphoma differ from non-leukemic tumors in regard to "allogeneic cell immunity".

In search of etiologic relevancy of the steroid deviations in urine, we compared the reproductive activities of patients having cervical cancer with those of normal controls. A premenopausal patient experienced the birth of her first child significantly earlier than did the urban control of corresponding age, despite their similarity of age at menarche. However, when the same patient was compared with the premenopausal rural control, this differences was not found. The same parameter also failed to differentiate a postmenopausal patient from the corresponding control of urban origin. The premenopausal patient who was indistinguishable from the rural control by age at first delivery was distinguished from the rural control by reduced excretions of adrenal steroids including 11-deoxy-17 ketosteroids and some corticosteroid metabolites. The spectrum and the degree of deviation of urinary steroids for a patient coincided with the spectrum and the degree of age dependency of the urinary steroids for a normal woman during and after adolescence. These findings indicated that the inability of the reproductive parameter to discriminate a patient was associated with growth retardation in a population, and a maturation deficiency of the adrenal gland (arrest of adrenarche) was implicated in the genesis of cervical cancer.
The effect of various steroidal compounds on the binding of the androphilic protein to dihydrotestosterone in the cytosol of tissues of human benign prostatic hypertrophy was examined. Androgens, as well as estrogens and gestagens showed an inhibitory effect on the binding. Non-steroidal anti-androgens were revealed to be weak inhibitors on the binding. Two androphilic proteins were observed in Sephadex G-200 chromatography in fractions eluted at the void volume and in fractions appearing at the site of IgG, and the rate of inhibition on the binding of both fractions by various steroids was compared. The rate of inhibition by various compounds was generally higher in the IgG fraction than in the void volume fraction. When the ligand and inhibitors were incubated with the cytosol prior to fractionation by Sephadex chromatography, rate of inhibition was lower than that obtained when the ligand and inhibitors were reacted with fractions after chromatography. Implications of the difference observed in these two experiments are not clear at this moment. The results obtained by the protamine precipitation experiment were almost the same as those by the experiment using the extract of the unfractionated acetone-dried cytosol, therefore, the protamine procedure does not seem to precipitate the tissue specific androphilic protein specifically.
Subcutaneously established tumors in WKA rats were treated with polycation DEAE-dextran (DEAE-D) and Friend murine leukemia virus (F-MuLV). This idea was based on "xenogenization of tumors," which is defined as the immunologic regression of transplanted tumors in syngeneic rats after artificial infection of tumors with murine leukemia viruses. Regressions of subcutaneously established tumors were induced in 13 of 40 (33%) rats by injection of DEAE-D and F-MuLV. Intratumor injections of DEAE-D and F-MuLV increased the regression of tumors in 7 of 12 (58%) rats as compared to that of tumors in 6 of 28 (21%) rats treated with DEAE-D and F-MuLV by other injection routes. Electron-microscopic and immunofluorescence examinations revealed that tumor cells were infected with F-MuLV and acquired F-MuLV-related surface antigen on the cell surfaces. Therefore, the regression in rats of subcutaneously established tumors by the injection of DEAE-D and F-MuLV may have been due to an immunologic mechanism that may have been the same as the xenogenization of transplanted tumors previously infected with murine leukemia viruses.

During the growth of five of ten primary tumors that were induced by 3-methylcholanthrene in BALB/cMk and BALB/cMk X C57BL/6F1 mice, leukemoid reactions, characterized by increase in number of granulocytes in peripheral blood, and splenomegaly were observed. However, no such reactions occurred in five C57BL/6 mice bearing primary tumors induced by 3-methylcholanthrene. The results of leukemoid reactions in mice bearing 3-methylcholanthrene-induced primary tumors are compared with the reactions found in mice bearing transplanted tumors.

Host genetic factors influencing the occurrence of leukemoid reaction in BALB/cMk strain mice bearing transplanted tumors were studied. A Mendelian hybridization experiment was performed with BALB/cMk and C57BL/6 strains, and their strain hybrids; the first filial (F1) generation hybrids; the second filial (F2) generation hybrids; and the backcrosses to the two parental strains. The results of these studies suggested a genetic regulation of leukemoid reaction occurrence in BALB/cMk mice bearing transplanted tumors. Genes permissive to the occurrence of the reaction seemed to be dominant to their nonpermissive alleles.
