A histological study on hepatic changes induced by the administration of ATP, ADP and AMP.

Hepatic changes induced by the administration of ATP, ADP and AMP were observed histologically. After five administrations of each of these substances, once every other day, infiltration of mononuclear cells into Glisson's capsules was observed. These findings could be considered as a localized granuloma. The degree of these changes was most conspicuous in the groups that had received ADP, followed by the ATP and AMP groups, respectively. Hepatic cell degeneration was seen mainly in the ATP groups, but was slightly in the groups that had received ADP and AMP, respectively. Both these changes were related to the administered quantities and seemed greater when the administration period was longer, with the exception of the groups that had received ATP. These hepatic changes were clearly different from those observed in the experiments in which hemolysate had been administered.

Suppression of 3H-lysine incorporation into the vascular non-collagenous protein in rats treated with estradiol-17 beta.

The in vivo incorporation of 3H-lysine into non-collagenous protein of the heart, aorta and mesenteric arteries was measured in castrated or non-castrated male young rats given hormone treatment once daily for 14 consecutive days. In rats given estradiol-17 beta (50 micrograms), a significant reduction of blood pressure was noted at 7 and 8 weeks of age. The lysine incorporation into non-collagenous protein was markedly decreased in mesenteric arteries and to a lesser extent in the aorta of rats treated with estradiol-17 beta (50 micrograms). The decline in blood pressure concomitant with the reduction of lysine incorporation into non-collagenous protein of the same vessels was of similar magnitude in castrated, testosterone (50 micrograms) plus estradiol-17 beta (50 micrograms)-treated rats as compared with that in castrated testosterone-treated (50 micrograms) animals. Despite the variety of hormone treatments, the incorporation of 3H-lysine into non-collagenous protein of heart was similar for all the rats examined. It is suggested that the suppressive effect of estradiol-17 beta on biosynthesis of vascular non-collagenous protein, especially in small arteries, plays an important role in lowering the blood pressure of young male rats.

New antibiotics, enaminomycins A, B and C. II. Physico-chemical and biological properties.

Physico-chemical characterization of enaminomycins revealed that these antibiotics are new members of the epoxy quinone family. From elementary analysis and mass spectroscopic measurements the molecular formulae of enaminomycins A, B and C appear to be C7H5NO5, C10H11N06 and C7H7NO5, respectively. They are very unique in their chemical properties, possessing various functions, such as epoxy, primary amine and carboxylic acid, in their small structural units. Enaminomycin A, the most potent component, has activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and shows cytostatic effect on L1210 mouse leukemia cells in vitro, but enaminomycins B and C are only weakly active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
