[High serum ferritin levels in malignant lymphoma of the ileum].

A 61-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with lower abdominal distension, anemia and slight emaciation. Primary malignant lymphoma of the ileum was diagnosed after laparotomy and palliative surgery was performed. Pathological specimens demonstrated diffuse lymphoma, and histiocytic (Rappaport's classification) aneurysm-type macroscopic development. The preoperative serum ferritin level was high and increased postoperatively with a slight decrease during VEMP chemotherapy, suggesting it to be a marker of tumor activity. Although palliation was observed during chemotherapy, this patient died of pulmonary complications a little less than 3 months after the operation.

Changes in mechanical properties of the circular muscle of the isthmus of the human fallopian tube in relation to hormonal domination and postovulatory time.

Using the isthmic circular ring from 76 subjects, the authors investigated the in vitro mechanical response of the fallopian tube to noradrenalin and field stimulation. In the proliferative and menopausal phases, preparations with high plasma levels of estradiol showed a high contractile response. In the secretory phase, responses were inhibitory or low at 4 to 6 and 11 to 14 days after the elevation of basal body temperature and were excitatory at 0 to 3 and 7 to 10 days. The exogenous application of estradiol failed to suppress these inhibitory responses. The findings suggest that the inhibitory response at 4 to 6 days after the elevation of BBT may aid in the release of the ovum from the fallopian tube and that after the ovulation, progesterone is mainly related to the response of the circular muscle to noradrenalin.

Chemoarchitectonics of the forebrain of the hagfish, Eptatretus burgeri.

The brain of the hagfish, Eptatretus burgeri, was investigated by enzyme histochemical methods to locate roughly the areas which have somatic, visceral, and correlative functions. From the results of previous investigations, it seems that, as a rule, AChE is found in the correlation areas and in a part of the visceral and somatic areas, whereas SDH and MAO are detected in the somatic and visceral areas, respectively. Therefore, the activities of these three enzymes can be used to indicate the functional areas. In addition, G6PD is used to detect areas related to the pentose cycle. Areas with remarkable AChE activity are layer 4 (neuropil), layer 3 (perikarya), layer 5 (perikarya and neuropil), the primordium hippocampi of Jansen (neuropil and a small number of perikarya), the median sagittal lamina of the habenula (neuropil and perikarya), some cells in the pars dorsalis thalami of Jansen (neuropil), the nucleus tuberculi posterior of Jansen (neuropil), and the hypophysis. Activity of SDH, MAO, and G6PD appears in the neuropil. Regions showing activity of both SDH and MAO are the olfactory nerves and glomeruli, the septal area, layer 1 and 4 including the neostriatum of Crosby and Schnitzlein, the primordium hippocampi of Jansen, the preotic area, the habenula, and the caudal part of the medial hypothalamus, this last being the circumference of the hypothalamic ventricle. Furthermore, the anterior part of the amygdala of Crosby and Schnitzlein shows SDH activity. Activity of G6PD is distributed in the same regions showing activity of SDH and MAO, with the exception of the primordium hippocampi of Jansen. Finally, (1) two groups of continuous areas of AChE activity are found conspicuously in the telencephalon; one group consists of layers 3, 4, and 5, and the other consists of the ventral part of the primordium hippocampi, the lateral part of the pars ventralis thalami, and the nucleus tuberculi posterior. These two groups may play a correlative role between the visceral and somatic areas and the cholinergic mechanisms. (2) It seems that the forebrain, especially in the hypothalamus, is poorly differentiated. Furthermore, (3) a comparison with other nonmammalian brains is made from the viewpoint of the chemoarchitectonics.

Filamentous contacts containing subjunctional dense lattice and tubular smooth endoplasmic reticulum in cat lateral geniculate nuclei.

Ultrastructure of filamentous contacts was examined in the cat lateral geniculate nucleus. This intercellular contact was classified into two types, asymmetrical and symmetrical, according to its fine structure. (1) The asymmetrical filamentous contact had a different fine structure on the cytoplasmic sides of its apposed membranes. This sort of contact occurred between the postsynaptic components of principal cells and the presynaptic terminals of either optic nerve or interneurons. The membrane on the presynaptic side showed a wavy outline. Plaques of cytoplasmic density were located on the crests of the wave. On the postsynaptic side cytoplasmic dense material formed a regularly arranged latticework on the membrane, 'subjunctional dense lattice'. The dense lattice was closely associated with underlying smooth surfaced endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, so as to form a subjunctional complex consisting of these 3 organelles. Two filamentous structures, neurofilaments and microtubules, enter and leave this subjunctional complex. (2) The symmetrical filamentous contact occurred between two principal cell components. Nearly the same fine structural arrangement as that on the postsynaptic side of the asymmetrical contact was present in the cytoplasm on the both sides of this junction.

Evaluation of the hypothalamic-pituitary function in a female with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia.

A case of Kallmann's syndrome in a woman is presented to evaluate the hypothalamic-pituitary function and status of the genital organs. The diagnosis of Kallmann's syndrome was performed under the determination of low circulating level of estradiol-17 beta and gonadotropins and low sensitivity to an olfactometer. Pituitary response to LRH was observed. Plasma LH response to LRH was observed in a lesser degree compared with the less impaired response of FSH. Daily injection of LRH for 13 days increased pituitary response of gonadotropin secretion. Diminished prolactin secretion and the dissociation of response to TRH and chlorpromazine were shown. Laparoscopic findings revealed a hypoplastic uterus and nearly normal sized ovaries. Ovarian response to exogenous gonadotropins was affirmed by increased estradiol-17 beta level. These results indicated disturbed hypothalamic control of gonadotropins and prolactin, and a reserved pituitary function in this case. Low circulating level of estradiol-17 beta might affect the heterogenous response of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis.

[Neurofilament hypertrophy induced in the rabbit spinal cord after intracisternal injection of aluminum chloride (author's transl)].

The cytological changes induced in the spinal cords of rabbits by intracisternal injections of aluminum chloride have been studied at the light- and electron-microscopic level for examining the progress of the 100 A filament hypertrophy. A moderate increase in the number of the 100 A filament was detected in perikarya of neurones in anterior, lateral, and dorsal horns 4--5 days after aluminum injection. Tangles of 100 A filament were seen in perikarya and proximal parts of dendrites in these neurones 1--2 weeks after the administration of aluminum. In this stage the tangles were detected as large clear spots at light-microscopic level. The 100 A filament bundles developed in between clumps of densely aggregated endoplasmic reticulum keeping close contact with this and squeezing other organella out. In high resolution studies the 100 A filament closely resembled the neurofilament in normal neurones in size and appearances and was seen to be connected with each other via side arms coming out from its wall. Relations between the endoplasmic reticulum and the 100 A filament hypertrophy was discussed referring to intoxicating effects of aluminum compounds on the nucleus of the neuron.
