Sliced liver tissue fragments of strained Wistar-Lewis rat were transplanted to the spleen. Most of transplanted liver tissues showed hyaline degeneration and epithelial ducts, similar to bile ducts, were observed on the seventh day. The liver tissue could not be identified one month after transplantation. But the masses of hepatic cells, having no sinusoid, were observed in some cases 12 months after transplantation. Macroautoradiographic studies with 99mTc-diethyl-IDA, hepato-biliary agent, were performed. The yellowish white portions of the specimens on the seventh day, corresponded to the transplanted liver tissue, indicated the uptake of 99mTc-diethyl-IDA. This means the transplanted fragments were alive and had a role of detoxication. The density of the fragments were 20% to 50% of that of the host liver. The survival ratio in acute hepatic failure induced with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) increased by the liver tissue fragments transplantation. The density of the transplanted fragments with hepatic injury by the CCl4 increased, compared with that of no injury.

A streptococcal preparation, OK-432, was employed as the adjuvant immunotherapeutic agent combined with chemotherapy in cases of lung cancer. To evaluate the clinical efficacy of OK-432, patients admitted between 1975 and 1982 were randomized into two groups: an immunochemotherapy, or immunotherapy, group and a chemotherapy, or control, group. For each case, a fixed protocol of chemotherapy was administered using a combination of three drugs. In this study, cases with small cell lung cancer were excluded, and the survival rates of cases with non-small cell lung cancer were evaluated. One hundred fifty-nine cases in the immunotherapy group and 152 cases in the control group were eligible for evaluation of long-term survival rates. When comparing the prognosis of the two groups, statistically significant improvements of the survival rate in the immunotherapy group were noted in the following categories: all cases, resected cases, nonresected cases, resected stage I + II cases, resected stage III + IV cases, completely resected cases, incompletely resected cases, and cases with epidermoid carcinoma. From the results of the present study, it is concluded that OK-432 is a potent immunopotentiative agent in the treatment of lung cancer.

In a patient with metachronous multiple primary lung cancer, bilateral lobectomy was performed, using bronchoplastic procedures. This case may be one of very few such cases reported in the literature. A 56-year-old man with squamous cell carcinoma was surgically treated for lung cancer. At the first operation, right upper lobectomy with wedge resection of the right main bronchus was performed, as the tumor occupied the orifice of the right main bronchus. Six months later, re-operation for stricture at the anastomotic line was done because of granulation. By means of sleeve resection of the strictured right main bronchus, the airway was reconstructed. The patient remained well for five years, then a similar cancer at the orifice of the left lower lobe and bulging into the left main bronchus became evident. Left lower sleeve lobectomy was done for the second primary cancer. The postoperative course was uneventful and he is well with no signs of recurrence 6 years and 10 months after the first operation and 19 months after the second sleeve lobectomy.
A case with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries associated with the pre-excitation syndrome is presented. A gated-blood-pool study and Tl-201 myocardial imaging were performed using SPECT. The tomographic gated-blood-pool images showed the shapes of the right ventricle (RV) and left ventricle (LV), i.e., anatomically LV and RV respectively, to be reversed from that of normal patients. The relationships of the great vessels and ventricles also were easily visualized. RV hypertrophy (anatomical LV) was visualized on the Tl-201 images. Phase analysis showed the earliest excitation was in the anteroseptal region near the base of the LV, which was consistent with the site of the accessory conduction pathway. The gated-blood-pool and Tl-201 tomographic studies were helpful for demonstrating the corrected transposition of the great arteries and the pre-excitation syndrome.
