Differences in the response of three embryologically distinct segments of the isolated canine posterior vena cava to vasoactive substances.

The canine posterior vena cava was excised and divided into three embryologically distinct segments: segment A (supradiaphragm), segment B-C (intrahepatic and that between liver and renal veins), and segment D (infrarenal). Circular and longitudinal strips were cut from each segment, suspended in Krebs bicarbonate solution and isometric tensions were recorded. The responses to six vasoactive agents, as well as transmural neural stimulation were studied. Maximum tension and ED50 were obtained for norepinephrine, epinephrine, acetylcholine, bradykinin, histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). The responses were not only quantitatively, but qualitatively different among the three segments. Bradykinin constricted the strips in A and B-C but not in D. 5-HT (less than 10(-5) M) caused a dose-dependent contraction in A and D through its direct stimulating action, while in C, a contractile response appeared only after administration of a higher dose of 5-HT. This was due to an indirect sympathomimetic action of the agent. Segment B-C, which histologically contained massive longitudinal muscle bundles in the outer layer of the wall, exhibited spontaneous, rhythmic contractions. The existence of a cholinergic excitatory innervation, in addition to adrenergic, was demonstrated in C by transmural neural stimulation.

Second derivative spectrophotometry as an effective tool for examining phenylalanine residues in proteins.

The second derivative absorption spectra of N-acetyl ethyl esters of phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan, as models of the aromatic amino acid residues in proteins, were measured. The second derivative spectra of tyrosine and tryptophan were found to have no influence on the spectrum of phenylalanine over the range of 245 to 270 nm, where characteristic absorbance bands of phenylalanine were observed. Thus the second derivative spectrum is a good tool for examining the optical properties of phenylalanine residues in proteins.

The further investigation on the gastric acid secretion in the primary hyperparathyroidism.

The gastric acid output was studied in the 11 patients of hyperparathyroidism before and after parathyroidectomy. The gastric acid output before operation was almost equal to the normal control in our hospital. After the correction of serum calcium by parathyroidectomy, the gastric acid output and serum gastrin were decreased. The decreased gastric acid output was recovered as the days passed since operation and approached to the preoperative level. The acid output in hyperparathyroidism was less in the case whose activity of alkaline phosphatase was more, which suggested that the calcium deposition on gastric mucosa might damage the parietal cell as the result of long lasting hypercalcemia.

Thallium-201 imaging with color display computer system in old myocardial infarction.

In 13 patients with old myocardial infarction diagnosed with use of the electrocardiogram, coronary angiogram and left ventriculogram and in 11 patients without infarction, thallium-201 imaging with a color display computer system was carried out. In the group without infarction the average ratio of activities in two regions of interest within the myocardial wall, excluding the apex, was 1.14 (1.08 to 1.23). In the group with infarction the average ratio of noninfarcted to infarcted areas was 1.44 (1.23 to 1.78). Objective detection of infarction was possible in 12 patients (92 percent) in the group with infarction. In two patients, the earlier electrocardiographic pattern of infarction had resolved by the time of imaging. These results suggest that the sensitivity of thallium-201 imaging in the diagnosis of old myocardial infarction may be greatly enhanced by objective and quantitative analysis using a color display computer system.

Studies on the bacterial spore coat 6 effects of alkali extraction on the spore of Bacillus thiaminolyticus.

Thin sections of the spore of Bacillus thiaminolyticus Matsukawa and Misawa show a characteristic surface structure with five ridges, and a series of three district layers. The outer layer of the spore coat was peeled off by SDS sonic treatment, and than the middle layer was solubilized by alkali extraction of the SDS sonic-treated spore. The spores subjected to these treatments were still refractile, heat resistant, and contained dipicolinic acid, but lost their resistance to mechanical shock.

[Statistical studies on the resected gastric cancer of 1538 cases in Hokkaido (author's transl)].

1538 cases with resected gastric cancer in 1974 were registered by the group of surgeons from 76 main hospitals in Hokkaido, who wished to clarify the present situation of the operation of gastric cancer in Hokkaido. The results were as follows; The ratio of male to female was 1.9 to 1.0. The frequency of the resection was 76.9%. The frequency of the early cancer was 13.5%. The frequency of the total gastrectomy was 15.3%. No remarkable differences were found between the above-mentioned results and the results from the whole country. However, the differences between the operable cases estimated by the mortality returns and so forth and the actual cases of the operation amounted to more than 500. Therefore it was clarified that a large number of cases with the gastric cancer for which the operation was indicated failed to be operated. Thus these studies have given out an important subject for the operation on the gastric cancer.

Foreign body migration from the bladder.

Because of the unusual route 2 cases of foreign body migration from the bladder are reported. In 1 case a thermometer was inserted into the bladder and penetrated into the peritoneal cavity. In the other case a thermometer penetrated from the bladder into the prevesical space. These penetrations occurred without any obvious manifestations after the thermometers were inserted into the bladder.
