Septicaemia caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in a female patient, aged 22, is reported. She had suffered from a chronic active hepatitis for 14 years and had been treated with corticosteroids and azathioprine. The Y. pseudotuberculosis septicaemia responded well to treatment with doxycycline orally, but the patient died 2 weeks later because of excessive bleeding from varicose veins of the oesophagus.

The effect of doxycycline treatment was studied in 46 men with chlamydial non-gonococcal urethritis. Treatment with 200 mg doxycycline daily for 10 days rendered 22 of 22 patients free of urethritis. The treatment had no effect on the complications of urethritis like prostatitis and Reiter's syndrome. In the other group where 200 mg doxycycline was given on the first day and 100 mg on the subsequent days for 8 days, urethritis was resolved in 18 of 22 patients. C. trachomatis was not re-isolated from any of the patients after doxycycline treatment.

The development of noise-induced hearing losses must in some way be related to the basilar membrane movement. Our analysis of this relationship is based on Mössbauer effect measurements of the basilar membrane movement in human temporal bone preparations. At a single basilar membrane position in each of seven preparations, the displacement frequency response was measured for a given sound pressure level at the ear drum. The measurements covered the place range 2.2--6.2 kHz. Despite the inadequacy of the experimental data, there seems to be no doubt that low frequency components contribute substantially to the displacement and mechanical strain of the hair cells near the 4 kHz location, where the hair cells are known to be most vulnerable to noise damage. In fact, the analysis performed indicates that these cells will suffer the greatest mechanical strain, almost irrespective of the spectrum shape of the stimulus noise.
A pigmented choroidal lesion was observed 41 years prior to enucleation. The patient, with a clinical diagnosis of malignant melanoma in an eye with good visual function, was followed up for the last 25 years by one of the authors. Sudden growth of the lesion and loss of vision led to enucleation and allowed histologic confirmation of the diagnosis of malignant melanoma. A pigmented iris lesion in the same eye was also present for 25 years and showed no notable growth under observation. The patient died of metastatic disease approximately one year after enucleation.

In 9 cases (6 men, 3 women) during 1975 we have isolated N. meningitidis from routine samples from urogenital/rectal locations to be examined for gonococci by culture. One of the men harboured meningococci in the rectum, the other 5 in the urethra. Two of the women had meningococci in the cervix and one in the urethra. Of the meningococci isolated, one belonged to serogroup A, 6 to group B and 2 to group C. Six of the patients, 4 men and 2 women, who attended the Department of Venereal Diseases, are described in greater detail. Of these, only one had symptoms. The meningococci disappeared spontaneously in 5 cases, whilst a man with unsymptomatic infection still harboured meningococci in the rectum after one month. Two of the 4 men were homosexual.

One hundred children from 1 to 14 years of age had serous otitis media, the manifestations of which were bilateral in all but four patients. Thus, 196 ears were treated with aeration of the middle ear by means of a short transmyringeal tube. The mean duration of the treatment was 3.4 years, and the mean observation time was 7.3 years. Of the ears treated, 79.1% regained normal hearing, though scarring of the tympanic membrane and smaller adhesions were observed. The result was not satisfactory in 20.9% of the ears treated, the hearing losses varying from 25 to 60 dB. In 7.7% (15 ears) chronic otitis media developed; in 5.6% (11 of the 15 ears) cholesteatoma was confirmed surgically. Adhesive processes were present in 11.2%.
