Studies were made on a case of well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the lung in which the serum levels of secretory IgA (sIgA) were very high. Immunofluorescent studies showed that secretory component (SC) was found to be diffusely distributed in cancer cells. The SC was detected in the supernatant of homogenates of cancer tissues from the primary site and lymph node with metastases. The SC extracted from cancer tissue and purified colostral SC were antigenically identical. The authors conclude that the adenocarcinoma cells produced SC and secreted it into the bloodstream and that the binding of SC with polymeric IgA resulted in the hypergammaglobulinemia of sIgA. This appears to be the first reported case of SC-producing lung cancer. The authors' findings suggest that the high serum levels of sIgA in cancer patients may be due to the production and secretion of SC by tumor cells themselves rather than the reabsorption of intraluminal sIgA into the circulation through a damaged epithelium.

The wall of a ureterocele and the proximal ureter involved were investigated with light and electron microscopy. Emphasis in our study was on the muscular structure. In most cases, that is in patients with single or duplex, or simple or ectopic ureteroceles, muscle bundles were hardly developed in the dome of the ureterocele but were well developed in the proximal ureter, with and without dilatation. In the dome of the ureterocele muscle cells were much smaller than those in the proximal ureter. Thick and thin myofilaments were demonstrated in muscle cells in the proximal ureter but thick myofilaments were absent in the dome of the ureterocele. These findings may suggest that a ureterocele is a segmental embryonal arrest of the most distal portion of the ureter.

We report our experience with 17 cases of paraureteral diverticula seen in the last 12 years. These 17 cases represent a particular group of patients with ureteral reflux in that they often had ureteral obstruction too. Early operative intervention is recommended. There is a trend towards renal dysmorphism and dysplasia as the position of the ureteral orifice laterlizes in the diverticulum. A paraureteral diverticulum was considered to be the developmental extravesical expansion of the terminal ureteral end by virtue of the caudally positioned ureteral bud in the wolffian duct.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-gel electrophoresis of erythrocruorin from the polychaete Tylorrhynchus heterochaetus revealed the presence of four subunits with molecular weights of 12,000, 22,000, 23,500, and 54,000 in a molar ratio of 6 : 1 : 2 : 3, respectively. The largest subunit dissociates into polypeptide chains of 13,500 molecular weight in the presence of mercaptoethanol, whereas each of the other subunits consists of a single polypeptide chain. Hemochromogen determination gave a minimum molecular weight of 26,500 per mol of heme group. A model of the subunit structure of the erythrocruorin molecule is proposed, composed of 144 subunits (252 polypeptide chains) possessing 144 heme groups. The molecular weight of the erythrocruorin was calculated to be 3.636 x 10(6).
The postnatal development of myocardial cells in the bilateral atria and ventricles of rats at days 1, 10, 20, 30 and 60 was studied by means of an ultrastructural quantitative method. No clear differences between the right and left myocardium were found throughout the developmental period or in the adult stage. The myocardial cells increased in thickness more rapidly up to day 20 than during the subsequent period. Myofibrils occupied about 50-60% of the cytoplasm of almost all kinds of cardiac muscle cells except those of the newborn atrium. The fraction of mitochondria increased after day 10, whereas that of glycogen conversely decreased. Although the presence of specific granules characterized the atrial myocardial cells even in newborns (day 1), no differences in other cellular components or fiber thickness between the atrium and the ventricle were seen at this stage. The distinction between atrial and ventricular muscle cells, in terms of fiber thickness, mitochondrial and glycogen content, began to appear at day 10 and became increasingly prominent with age until virtually all muscle fibers reached an almost mature state at day 20.
The guinea pig is a nest-quitter or nidifugous mammal which develops almost to the weaning stage before birth. Myocardial cells of the bilateral atria and ventricles of guinea pigs were examined for comparison with the rat by an ultrastructural quantitative method during the pre- and postnatal developmental periods, at copulation ages of 50, 57, 64 (term), 73 and 80 days. Throughout the developmental stages, no clear differences between the right and left sides were found in the characteristics of the myocardial cells. At the stage of day 57, T-tubules were first recognized in the venticular muscle cells, and at the same time the fiber thickness of the ventricular muscle cells (8-9 microns) became greater than that of the atrial cells (6-7 microns). At this stage, the fraction of mitochondria was also found to differ between the atrial and ventricular muscle cells. The general cellular features appeared to change more greatly during the last prenatal week from copulation day 57 to day 64 (term) than during the first postnatal week. Thus, the last prenatal week in the ontogeny of the guinea pig may be interpreted as corresponding to the postnatal period from the 10th to the 20th day in the ontogeny of the rat.

After a determination of the frequency of dens invaginatus by means of radiographic observations, various problems of its identification are discussed. The 188 teeth showing a distinct loop-shaped invagination apically on the radiograph were studied for the presence or absence of caries and periapical lesions. It was demonstrated that periapical lesions caused by caries are mostly due to interproximal caries and that the frequency of periapical lesions caused by caries in the dens invaginatus area was less than previously reported. Comments are made on the dens invaginatus cases having periapical lesions without caries and the parameters for future studies.

A case report of traumatic hemobilia following suture of superficial laceration of the liver is presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by emergency endoscopy preoperatively. Segmental hepatic resection was successful. Endoscopy is the most convenient as well as harmless procedure in establishing the diagnosis preoperatively. The importance of careful observation of the papilla of Vater in endoscopy to determine the site of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage is emphasized. In addition, the introduction of serial endoscopy to follow the course of mild hemobilia is suggested.
