We report 2 rare cases of single ectopic ureter simulating double vas deferens. Clinical, radiographic and macroscopic signs at operation indicated a single ectopic ureter opening into the seminal tract. However, histological examination of the surgical specimen revealed that the lumen of the supposed ureter was lined in part by columnar epithelium, although chiefly by transitional epithelium. The wall of the ureter contained 3 well defined muscular coats in case 1 but only 1 layer was distinguishable in case 2. Histological composition of the structure removed from the cranial site resembled that of the epididymis. A review of the literature revealed a few comparable cases. Analysis of these cases suggests that double vas deferens and a single ectopic ureteral opening into the seminal tract are such that their differentiation may only have semantic significance. We speculate that these 2 diseases are included as 1 entity, only to be distinguished by the difference of ureterization of the ureteral bud.
We report on 17 female and 4 male patients with single ectopic ureters, 9 of whom also had vaginal ectopic ureters. The clinicopathological features and surgical management are presented, with particular emphasis on the associated renal dysplasia and the complete excision of the ectopic ureteral stump. Although single ureteral ectopia with drainage to the vagina is rare in the English literature the condition is common in Japan.
Ultrastructural differentiation of cardiac muscle cells in the bilateral atria and ventricles of the cat at 1, 16, 25 and 40 days and 6 months after birth was studied by morphometry on electron micrographs. At the newborn stage, no T-tubule was found in the ventricular muscle cells, but specific granules were already noted in the atrial myocytes. The cell diameter of the ventricular myocardium was greater than that of the atrium at this stage. The T-tubule was first recognized in the ventricular muscle cells at day 16, at which stage the area occupied by the mitochondria and glycogen in the atrial muscle cells was definitely found to differ from that in the ventricular muscle cells. Thereafter, the differences in the ultrastructure between the atria and ventricles became more remarkable, particularly in the cell diameter and in the mitochondrial area. The cat cardiac muscle cells are characterized by numerous lipid droplets within the cytoplasm in contrast to those of the rat and the guinea pig.

Effects produced by intratumor or systemic application of FK-156 and its synthetic derivatives on the syngeneic P388-DBA/2 mouse system were investigated. Among 21 compounds tested, FK-156, FK-565, FR-46758, FR-48217, FR-46091 and FR-47920 substantially suppressed tumor growth when directly injected into a tumor mass and further experiments showed that FK-156, FK-565 and FR-46758 were effective even when administered subcutaneously into site remote from tumor. The mechanisms of growth inhibition are strongly suggested to be host mediated, because these three compounds have remarkably low cytotoxicity against P388 cells in vitro. A single dose of FK-565, however, markedly decreased body weight in healthy DBA/2 mice, whereas FK-156 and FR-46758 did not. These results indicate the superiority of FK-156 and FR-46758 as immunotherapeutic agents over FK-565 with respect to their safety for treatment of cancer. Although significant life-span prolongation could not be seen in the two-injection regimen of six compounds in either system, systemic multiple injections of FK-156 and FR-46758 provided a statistically significant increase in the median survival time of P388 tumor bearing mice.

The protein components in concentrated bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALFs) from 10 healthy smokers and 10 non-smokers were analysed, using a differential quantitative method to measure bronchial secretory IgA(sIgA). In 3 volunteers the effect of increasing the volume of lavage fluid was also examined, indicating an increased recovery of each protein component but no change in the ratio of the different proteins. Albumin (Alb), alpha 1-antitrypsin, IgG and sIgA were consistently found, and IgE, C3-activator and C4 were sometimes found in BALFs, whereas, characteristically, IgM could never be detected. IgG/Alb ratio was not different from the serum value, reflecting passive transudation of IgG from the serum. However, some bronchial IgG could also be produced locally, especially in smokers, because their bronchial IgG/Alb ratio was significantly higher than in non-smokers. For IgA/Alb ratio, BALFs values were much higher than in serum, implying that most of the bronchial IgA was synthesized locally. In smokers, the amount of bronchial IgA tended to be decreased, suggesting that cigarette smoking suppresses bronchial IgA production and, hence, disturbs the local immunity of the lung.

The appearance of nutrient canals in the mandibular anterior region was studied by evaluating the complete-mouth dental radiographs of 1,586 patients who were subdivided into four groups. The incidence of nutrient canals was very high in patients with periodontal disease, in patients of advanced age, and especially in endentulous patients. Nutrient canals appeared most frequently in radiographs demonstrating "above average" bone density with small diminutive trabecular spaces. Other factors influencing the presence of nutrient canals included the thickness of the alveolar bone, the quality of both cortical and cancellous bone, and the loss of mandibular teeth.

An interesting immunoactive peptide, FK-156, has been isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces olivaceogriseus sp. nov. and Streptomyces violaceus. The compound was purified by column chromatography with activated carbon, ion exchange Sephadex and cellulose powder. FK-156, obtained as white powder, exhibits a wide variety of immunostimulatory activity in vivo and in vitro with experimental animals. Pretreatment of mice or rats with this peptide protected the animals against lethal infection with Escherichia coli and resulted in prolongation of life span of tumor bearing animals.
