A new modified nucleoside located in the anticodon of tRNA2Gly from the posterior silk glands of Bombyx mori has been isolated and its structure determined as 5-(carboxy-hydroxymethyl)uridine mainly by analyses of its UV, 1H NMR, and FD mass spectra.

Twenty-four patients had resection of their ventricular aneurysm and 29 had resection plus revascularization. Sixty percent of the patients received no blood in the heart lung machine during surgery or at any time during hospitalization. One of 24 patients with ventricular resection and two of 29 patients with resection plus revascularization died during hospitalization, for an overall mortality of 5.7%. Fifty of the 53 patients had an ejection fraction of 0.4 or less and 23 of these had an ejection fraction of 0.2 or less. Survival rate was 75.5% at four years for all 53 patients compared to only 12% of patients alive at five years with medical treatment. For the patient with a large ventricular aneurysm, resection and myocardial revascularization can be performed with a low risk even for the patient with poorly functioning residual myocardium.
Cholecystokinin (CCK)-like activities in the duodenal mucosa were measured by bioassay in patients with duodenal ulcer, cholelithiasis and some other gastrointestinal diseases as well as in healthy normal subjects. The mean CCK-like activity of the duodenal mucosa in patients with duodenal ulcer and cholelithiasis was 0.405 Ivy dog units per milligram and 0.376 Ivy dog units per milligram of dry weight of the duodenal mucosa (IDU/mg d.w.), respectively. Both these figures are significantly higher than 0.180 IDU/mg d.w. in normal subjects (p less than 0.005, p less than 0.005, respectively). It can be speculated that the CCK-level of the duodenal mucosa in patients with cholelithiasis may be regulated by a feedback mechanism and CCK in patients with duodenal ulcer may act physiologically for the cure of duodenal ulcer.
One of the E. coli mutants selected for deficiency of modified nucleoside Q was found to contain an analogue of Q and normal guanosine in place of Q. The analogue of Q, designated as preQo, was isolated on a large scale from purified tRNATyr containing preQo. The structure of preQo was determined to be 7-(cyano)-7-deazaguanosine by comparison of its ultraviolet absorption spectra, thin-layer chromatographic mobility and mass spectrum with those of synthetic material.
A precursor of modified nucleoside Q isolated from E. coli methyl-deficient tRNA was determined to be 7-(aminomethyl)-7-deazaguanosine. The structure was deduced by means of its chromatographic and electrophoretic mobilities, and UV and mass spectra, in addition to comparison with the synthesized authentic compound. The same molecule is also found in tRNA of an E. coli mutant selected for deficient synthesis of modified nucleosides.
p-Nitrophenyl phosphatase (p-NPPase) activity of (Na+-K+)-activated adenosine triphosphatase ((Na+-K+)-ATPase) on the acinar cells of dog submandibular gland was demonstrated by using light microscopy. The reaction products of p-NPPase of fresh frozen sections were seen to be localized on the basal parts of acini, and disappeared when the sections were incubated in medium containing 10(-3) Mouabain or in a K-free medium. Under the electron microscope, the reaction products of ATPase were found to be localized on the basolateral plasma membrane of both serous and mucous cells. On the microvilli of the luminal plasma membrane of the acinar cell, a small quantity of the reaction products was also present. This localization of ATPase reaction products on the serous and mucous cells seemed to coincide well with that of p-NPPase activity observed on the acini under light microscopy. Possible explanations are given regarding distribution of the above mentioned enzymes in relation to the cation transport of the plasma membrane. Structural and functional asymmetrical properties of acinar cells of the dog submandibular gland are also discussed.

Two cases with epidermoid and one case with dermoid in the 4th ventricle were treated in our clinic during the last one year. The clinical findings in these three cases were described, and dermoid and epidermoid tumors in the 4th ventricle were discussed dealing with the incidence and the characteristic features of the findings in CT scanning. The correct diagnosis of both epidermoid and dermoid in the 4th ventricle was done by CT-scanning which showed an irregular low density area of EMI No. -4 approximately 12 in the posterior fossa without any contrast media enhancement. The low density lesion could be differentiated by both angiogram and ventriculogram from arachnoid cyst, ependymoma, cystic astrocytoma and cystic hemangioblastoma in the 4th ventricle. Total removal of the tumor was performed on 2 cases, and a part of the tumor capsule attached to the medulla oblongata was left in the other case. All patients returned to their own job after operation.
Giant aneurysm of the posterior cerebral artery was very rare. The authors could seek only 6 cases in published literature. We experienced one case of the giant aneurysm at the posterior cerebral artery. The case was 25 years old female. She occasionaly complained of headache and nausea for 4 years before administration. Cerebral angiogram revealed a giant aneurysm of the right posterior cerebral artery with slightly dilated ventricle. CT scan revealed a ring shape high density area and its high density area enhanced by Conray infusion. A clipping of posterior cerebral artery at the just proximal point of the aneurysmal neck was done, because adhesion of the aneurysm to the brain stem was very tight and the aneurysmal neck was very broad. After the operation, giant aneurysm was not seen on both angiogram and CT scan. Patient did not complain of headache any more and any defect of the visual field.

Seven color-opponent bipolar and 50 color-opponent amacrine cells were identified in the carp retina and their spectral responses examined by using procion-dye-filled micropipets for staining and recording. Four of the bipolar cells had a +R-G-and three a +Y-B-type chromatic center. Six of the bipolar cells showed hyperpolarizing non-color-opponent surrounds, while one +R-G-type cell had a +Y-RB-type surround. This cell showed the greatest complexity of all bipolar cells identified so far, and its spectral property strongly suggests the existence of an intimate relation between it and +Y-RB-type horizontal cells. Examination and classification of the 50 amacrine cells revealed that 17 belonged to the +R-G, 16 to the -R+G, 6 to the +Y-B, and 11 to the -Y + B type. Most of these cells showed non-color-opponent surrounds. Yet, the similarity of the chromatic arrangement of their centers with that of the ganglion cells shows that the four basic types of color channels are already in existence in the amacrine cells where they seem to originate.
