Hydronephrosis caused by a left renal vein in a patient with horseshoe kidney: a case report.

We report a rare case of hydronephrosis secondary to ureteropelvic stenosis caused by a branch of the left renal vein in horseshoe kidney. We were unable to determine the etiology of hydronephrosis of the horseshoe kidney by means of radiological images. When radiological images fail to show any etiology of hydronephrosis in horseshoe kidney, the possibility of compression of the ureteropelvic junction by a branch of the renal vein should be borne in mind, and re-assessment of the venous phase of angiography and evaluation by coronal or sagittal images of MRI is recommended.

Osseointegrated implants in a patient with osteoporosis: a case report.

Osteoporosis is a relative contraindication for osseointegrated implants. This article describes a patient with severe osteoporosis who underwent implant therapy in the mandible. The treatment was carried out in a conventional manner, except for a longer healing period (6 months). All implants had clinically osseointegrated. Furthermore, there was no problem after the superstructure was placed.

A Japanese multicenter study of osseointegrated implants placed in irradiated tissues: a preliminary report.

A survey was undertaken to analyze implants placed in irradiated tissues. It was found that nine centers had placed 118 implants in 24 patients in Japan. Of 118 implants, 39 were in the maxilla, 71 were in the mandible, and 8 were in the orbital region. Seven patients underwent adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen treatment. The treatment decreased implant loss only in the maxilla. (The success rate without hyperbaric oxygen treatment was 62.5%, and that with hyperbaric oxygen treatment was 80.0% for the maxilla.) Implants 7 and 10 mm in length were at a greater risk of being lost than longer implants in the maxilla.

Comparison of the closing dynamics of mechanical prosthetic heart valves.

To compare the closing dynamics of mechanical tilting disk prosthetic heart valves (OmniScience 25 [OS25], Medtronic-Hall 25 [MH25], Bjork-Shiley Monostrut 29 [BS29]) and bileaflet valves (CarboMedics 29 [CM29]) in the mitral position, an x-ray high speed video camera (XHVC) and a mechanical mock circulator were used. From the continuous images taken with the XHVC, the starting point of closing and the period during closing (PDC) were measured. Pressures and flow rate were recorded at 500 Hz synchronously with the XHVC. A pressure difference across the valves at the onset of closing (dpc) was newly introduced to compare the closing response. Using 60 and 100 bpm, the following results were obtained: 1) the CM29 had less PDC and maximum backflow rate than the BS29; 2) the dpc and the PDC at 100 bpm were larger than those at 60 bpm; 3) the dpc of the MH25 was the lowest; and 4) the PDC of the CM29 was the shortest. With regard to the effect of valve design on closing dynamics, it was shown that: 1) less momentum of inertia of the occluder and disk traveling angle resulted in lower dpc and shorter PDC, and 2) the higher the dpc and the PDC became, the larger the maximum backflow rate that was generated, and 3) low final closing speed will be achieved for small disk travelling angle.

Effects of steroid-induced osteoporosis on osseointegration of titanium implants.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of steroid administration on the osseointegration of pure titanium implants. Twelve female New Zealand white rabbits, 8 weeks of age, were divided into two groups: a prednisolone-treated group (Group P) and a control group (Group C). In each rabbit, two implants were placed into the mandible and two into the tibial metaphyses with bone tapping. The six steroid-treated rabbits received three courses of 4 days of prednisolone injections (10 mg/kg per day) before implant placement, 1 month and 2 months after implant placement. The six control rabbits received no administration of prednisolone. Three months after implant placement, all rabbits were sacrificed. Bone density of the femur and removal torque of the implants placed in the tibia were significantly lower in Group P than in Group C. In addition, there were significant correlations between the bone density of the femur and the removal torque of the implants placed in the tibia. There was no significant difference in removal torque of the implants placed in the mandible between Group P and Group C, and there was no significant correlation between the bone density of the femur and the removal torque of the implants placed in the mandible. These results suggest that steroid administration could have less effect on the osseointegration of titanium implants in the mandible than in the skeletal bone.

Prosthetic treatment using an osseointegrated implant after secondary bone grafting of a residual alveolar cleft: a case report.

Conventionally, for dental reconstruction after bone grafting of the congenital residual alveolar cleft, a fixed prosthesis or removable partial denture is used. In this paper, residual alveolar cleft reconstruction with an osseointegrated implant following secondary bone grafting is described. The patient underwent secondary bone grafting of the residual alveolar cleft at the age of 18 years. One osseointegrated implant was placed in the bone bridge 8 months after bone grafting. No problems up to 1 year after the fabrication and placement of the fixed prosthesis have been observed.
