A myxoid leiomyoma of the uterus is radiologically described. Sonography showed a large mass extending from the renal hilum to the pelvis. Enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings denoted cystic and myxoid components. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated flow voids between the mass and the uterus, indicating likely origin from the uterus. Exploratory laparotomy showed a huge leiomyomatous mass.
We encountered two cases of endocervical well-differentiated adenocarcinoma with cystic components. Magnetic resonance findings of the first case showed cystic lesion with enhanced mural nodule in the uterine cervix. The second case showed multicystic lesion in the uterine cervix. The cystic walls were thickening in the postcontrast T1-weighted image. The cervical adenocarcinoma with cystic components should be added to one of differential diagnosis of the uterine cervical cystic lesion.
We report a case of a 78-year-old woman with cerebellar infarction who developed intracerebral bleeding during the magnetic resonance (MR) examination. The intensity of the hematoma was heterogeneous corresponding to the heterogeneous density shown on CT study that immediately followed the MR examination.
To review clinical outcomes and therapeutic varieties, we were invited to submit data from the patients who were treated for uterine sarcomas in Japan from 1990 to 2003. Uterine sarcomas were defined as leiomyosarcoma (LMS), endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS), and carcinosarcoma (CS). Of a total of 97 patients, 36 (37.1%) were diagnosed with LMS of the uterine corpus, 15 (15.5%) with ESS, 46 (47.4%) with CS. Median age at diagnosis was 59 (21-85) years. Clinical stages based on FIGO were 41 (42.3%) with stage I disease, 6 (6.2%) with staged II, 34 (35.1%) with stage III, and 16 (16.5%) with stage IV. The median follow-up period for all patients was 13 (1-108) months and median disease-free period was 9 (0-96) months. The 1-year survival rate and disease-free survival (DFS) rate were calculated in patients with all sarcomas (overall survival [OAS], 61.3%; DFS, 46.6%). Statistical analysis showed that younger age (less than 50 years), early stage (stages I and II), and surgical procedure (extended hysterectomy [EH] and radical hysterectomy [RH]) were associated with significantly better OAS. Histologic types did not affect the survival period. In conclusion, aggressive surgery including EH or RH at the time of initial operation offers the possibility of prolonged survival.
851 school children aged at 12-13 years including 145 with eczema were tested for genetic association to a mast cell chymase (MCC) genetic variant. MCC genotypes showed a strong association with eczema, but not with asthma and rhinitis. This association is strongest in eczematous children with lower serum total IgE levels. Independent of IgE responsiveness when total serum IgE of less than 500 IU/ml, MCC variants may play an important role in inflammatory skin disorders.
Twenty-four Japanese atopic sibs with asthma and/or rhinitis were tested for polymorphic microsatellite repeats of Fc epsilon RI beta on chromosome 11q13. Significantly increased sharing of maternal alleles was found chi 2 = 5.86, p < 0.025) while no significant sharing was found for paternal alleles. These findings confirm maternal inheritance of atopy at this locus in a non-Caucasian population.
Papillary hypertrophy of the tonsils is one of the rare abnormalities of the palatine tonsils. Since the first reports of papillary hypertrophy of the tonsils by Ogino and Matsui, only 30 cases of this disease have been reported in Japan. The etiology of papillary hypertrophy remains a myster. A 5-year-old female visited our clinic with a complaint of obstructive feeling in the throat. Papillary surface of the palatine tonils were noticed. Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy were performed under general anesthesia on October 25, 1977. the histopathological examination of the tonsils revealed the lymphoid hyperplasia with poor subepithelial connective tissues. Only slight chronic inflammation was present. This papillary hypertrophy of the tonsils was found in 13 members (6 male, 7 female) of her family pedigree. Genetical analysis of the pedigree showed this disease is transmitted by an autosomal dominant gene.

The surface topology of the lymphocytes in human tonsils was performed by means of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was revealed that human tonsils consist of both 40.7% villous and 26.6% smooth surface lymphocytes. In general, the percentage results agree with those of E and EAC binding lymphocytes of human tonsils, as previously reported. Our serial experiments using immunological techniques proved the existence of two lymphocytes (T and B cell) having immunological roles.
A 62-year-old woman presented with a mobile abdominal palpable mass. She underwent MR examination twice. Because of the mobility of the mass, it was out of the field of view on the first MR examination. The second MR examination detected the mass, which showed heterogeneous signal intensity including low and high intensity on T2-weighted spin echo images. The mass, which was cavernous hemangioma with old hemorrhage, was difficult to differentiate from fibroma or thecoma of the ovary or subserosal leiomyoma of the uterus.
This report illustrates the case of a 79-year-old woman in whom a severe type of rectus sheath hematoma was found during conservative therapy for myocardial infarction. Although establishing a correct diagnosis and initiating conservative therapy is usually considered the most appropriate management of this clinical entity, the rectus sheath hematoma in this patient required surgical treatment.
