Effect of substituents on the thermal decomposition of diazirines: experimental and computational studies.

The thermal decomposition of phenylchlorodiazirine (1), phenyl-n-butyldiazirine (2), and 2-adamantane-2,3'-[3H]diazirine (3) has been studied in solution in the presence of C(60). The C(60) probe technique indicates that in the decomposition diazirine 1 yielded exclusively phenylchlorocarbene, diazirine 2 yielded mainly a diazo intermediate, and diazirine 3 yielded a mixture of carbene and diazo compound. In the case of diazirine 2, 13% of (E)-1-phenyl-1-pentene resulted from the direct thermal rearrangement of diazirine without the participation of a carbene. As well, the thermal decomposition of these diazirines has been studied theoretically with ab initio and density functional methods. The experimental results are broadly in agreement with the theoretical predictions. The calculations further indicate that the rebound reaction between carbene and molecular nitrogen leading to the formation of a diazo intermediate is an important reaction in the gas-phase decomposition of diazirine.

Synthesis and characterization of tetrakis-silylated C60 isomers.

A photochemical reaction of C(60) with disilane in a 2:3 ratio affords the isomer mixture of the tetrakis-adduct of C(60)((t)BuPh(2)Si)(4) as the major product. The use of a three-stage HPLC separation system isolated three of their isomers. Their structural assignments were based on FAB mass, UV-vis, NMR, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. The CV analysis showed that the terakis-adduct has lower oxidation and higher reduction potentials than the bis-adduct C(60)((t)BuPh(2)Si)(2) and the parent C(60).

Structural and electronic properties of metal-encapsulated silicon clusters in a large size range.

Structural and electronic properties of metal-doped silicon clusters MSi(n)s (M=W, Zr, Os, Pt, Co, etc.) in a large size range of 8<or=n<or=20 are investigated via ab initio calculations. Different from a recent experimental suggestion that the metal atom is endohedral in MSi(n), we reveal that the formation of endohedral structure strongly depends on the size of the Si(n) cluster. Two novel structures of the chemically stable endohedral species are manifested. The suitable M@Si(n) building blocks of self-assembly materials vary in the range of 10<or=n<or=16. The thermodynamical magic numbers are found to coincide with the chemical magic numbers for five clusters.

Characteristic reactions and properties of C-apical O-equatorial (O-cis) spirophosphoranes: effect of the sigma(P)(-)(O) orbital in the equatorial plane and isolation of a hexacoordinate oxaphosphetane as an intermediate of the Wittig type reaction of 10-P-5 phosphoranes.

Novel spirophosphoranes (O-cis) that exhibit reversed apicophilicity having an apical carbon-equatorial oxygen array in a five-membered ring showed enhanced reactivity toward nucleophiles such as n-Bu(4)N(+)F(-) or MeLi in comparison with the corresponding stable isomeric spirophosphoranes (O-trans) having an apical oxygen-equatorial carbon configuration. The enhanced reactivity of the O-cis isomer could be explained by the presence of a lower-lying sigma(P)(-)(O(equatorial)) orbital as the reacting orbital in the equatorial plane, whereas the corresponding orbital is a higher-lying sigma(P)(-)(C(equatorial)) in the O-trans isomer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation on the actual compounds provided theoretical support for this assumption. In addition, we found that the benzylic anion alpha to the phosphorus atom in O-cis benzyl phosphorane is much more stable than that generated from the corresponding O-trans compounds. The experimental results were considered to be due to the n(C) --> sigma(P)(-)(O) interaction in the O-cis anion, and this was confirmed by DFT calculations. Furthermore, the hexacoordinate anionic species derived from the reaction of the benzylic anion from O-cis benzylphosphorane with an aldehyde was also found to be stabilized as compared with analogous species from the corresponding O-trans isomer. The first X-ray structural characterization of a hexacoordinate phosphate intermediate in the Wittig type reaction using pentacoordinate phosphoranes is reported.

Synthesis, structure, and bonding properties of 5-carbaphosphatranes: a new class of main group atrane.

1-Hydro-5-carbaphosphatrane (1) and 1-methyl-5-carbaphosphatrane (2), the first 5-carbon analogues of phosphatranes, were synthesized by a demethylation reaction of cyclic phosphinate 3. X-ray analysis revealed that 1 has a typical trigonal bipyramidal structure with hydrogen and carbon atoms at the apical position and three oxygen atoms at the equatorial positions, indicating that 1 is a phosphorane in the perfectly "anti-apicophilic" arrangement. Apical P-C and P-H bond lengths were 1.921(2) and 1.38(2) A, respectively. The (1)J(PH) value of 1 and the (1)J(PC)(P-CH(3)) value of 2 were 852 and 215 Hz, respectively, which are extraordinarily large for the apical coupling constants of phosphoranes, but close to those of the reported phosphatranes with a 5-nitrogen atom. IR and Raman spectra are also reported. Force constant calculations indicate the transannular bond in carbaphosphatrane is 3 times stronger than in silatrane, due to its covalent character.

The first halogen-substituted cyclotrigermenes: a unique halogen walk over the three-membered ring skeleton and facial stereoselectivity in the Diels-Alder reaction.

Dark red crystals of the halogen-substituted cyclotrigermenes [(tBu3Si)3Ge3X; X = Cl, Br, I] were obtained in good yields by the reaction of [(tBu3Si)3Ge3]+.TTFPB- (TTFPB- = tetrakis(2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)borate) with potassium halides (KCl, KBr, or KI) in diethyl ether. The crystal structures of the halogen-substituted cyclotrigermenes reveal a cis-bent Ge=Ge double bond, caused by the introduction of the electronegative halogen atom on the sp3 germanium atom of cyclotrigermene. In solution, an intramolecular halogen migration over the three-membered ring skeleton was observed. Facial stereoselectivity in the Diels-Alder reaction of new cyclotrigermenes with 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene is also reported.
