Open-cage fullerene derivatives suitable for the encapsulation of a hydrogen molecule.

The encapsulation of molecular hydrogen into an open-cage fullerene having a 16-membered ring orifice has been investigated. It is achieved by the pressurization of H2 at 0.6-13.5 MPa to afford endohedral hydrogen complexes of open-cage fullerenes in up to 83% yield. The efficiency of encapsulation is dominantly dependent on both H2 pressure and temperature. Hydrogen molecules inside the C60 cage are observed in the range of -7.3 to -7.5 ppm in 1H NMR spectra, and the formations of hydrogen complexes are further confirmed by mass spectrometry. The trapped hydrogen is released by heating. The activation energy barriers for this process are determined to be 22-24 kcal/mol. The DSC measurement of the endohedral H2 complex reveals that the escape of H2 from the C60 cage corresponds to an exothermic process, indicating that encapsulated H2 destabilizes the fullerene.

Synthesis and characterization of stable hypervalent carbon compounds (10-C-5) bearing a 2,6-bis(p-substituted phenyloxymethyl)benzene ligand.

X-ray analysis of bis(p-fluorophenyl)methyl cation bearing a 2,6-bis(p-tolyloxymethyl)benzene ligand showed a symmetrical structure (10-C-5) where the two C-O distances are identical, although the distance (2.690(4) A) is longer than those (2.43(1) and 2.45(1) A) of 1,8-dimethoxy-9-dimethoxymethylanthracene monocation, which was recently reported by us. However, X-ray analysis of the more stable aromatic xanthylium cation with the same benzene ligand showed the tetracoordinate carbon structure where only one of the two oxygen ligands is coordinated with the central carbon atom. These results clearly indicate that the carbocations (10-C-5) bearing the sterically flexible benzene ligand were quite sensitive to the electronic effect on the central carbon atom. The electron distribution analysis by accurate X-ray measurements and the density functional calculation on the initially mentioned bis(p-fluorophenyl)methyl cation clearly show that the central carbon atom and the two oxygen atoms are bonded even if the bond is weak and ionic based on the small value of the electron density (rho(r)) and the small positive Laplacian value (nabla(2)rho(r)) at the bond critical points.

Synthesis and characterization of exohedrally silylated M@C82 (M = Y and La).

The silylation of endohedral mono-metallofullerenes (Y@C(82) and La@C(82)) and isolation of the corresponding adducts by HPLC separation have been accomplished. The redox properties of the silylated mono-metallofullerene were first clarified by CV and DPV measurements, indicating that the bis-silylated mono-metallofullerenes have lower oxidation and higher reduction potentials than the parent mono-metallofullerenes. These results reveal that bis-silylation is very effective for producing the electronegatively mono-metallofullerene derivatives as well as empty fullerenes.

Syntheses and structures of hypervalent pentacoordinate carbon and boron compounds bearing an anthracene skeleton--elucidation of hypervalent interaction based on X-ray analysis and DFT calculation.

Pentacoordinate and tetracoordinate carbon and boron compounds (27, 38, 50-52, 56-61) bearing an anthracene skeleton with two oxygen or nitrogen atoms at the 1,8-positions were synthesized by the use of four newly synthesized tridentate ligand precursors. Several carbon and boron compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis, showing that compounds 27, 56-59 bearing an oxygen-donating anthracene skeleton had a trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) pentacoordinate structure with relatively long apical distances (ca. 2.38-2.46 A). Despite the relatively long apical distances, DFT calculation of carbon species 27 and boron species 56 and experimental accurate X-ray electron density distribution analysis of 56 supported the existence of the apical hypervalent bond even though the nature of the hypervalent interaction between the central carbon (or boron) and the donating oxygen atom was relatively weak and ionic. On the other hand, X-ray analysis of compounds 50-52 bearing a nitrogen-donating anthracene skeleton showed unsymmetrical tetracoordinate carbon or boron atom with coordination by only one of the two nitrogen-donating groups. It is interesting to note that, with an oxygen-donating skeleton, the compound 61 having two chlorine atoms on the central boron atom showed a tetracoordinate structure, although the corresponding compound 60 with two fluorine atoms showed a pentacoordinate structure. The B-O distances (av 2.29 A) in 60 were relatively short in comparison with those (av 2.44 A) in 59 having two methoxy groups on the central boron atom, indicating that the B-O interaction became stronger due to the electron-withdrawing nature of the fluorine atoms.

Chemical reactivities of the cation and anion of M@C82 (M = Y, La, and Ce).

The chemical reduction and oxidation of M@C82 (M = Y, La, and Ce) afford the corresponding anion and cation, respectively, which show unique and interesting chemical reactivities. It is found that the successful reversible gain or loss of electrons by ionization is useful for controlling the stability and reactivity of M@C82 toward both nucleophiles and electrophiles.

Isolation of a Se-nitrososelenol: a new class of reactive nitrogen species relevant to protein Se-nitrosation.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a messenger molecule implicated in a number of physiological processes. Nitrosation of selenoproteins has been suggested as playing an important role in NO-mediated cellular functions such as the inactivation of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), but no chemical information about Se-nitrosated species has been available to date. Here a stable Se-nitrososelenol (RSeNO), a new class of NO derivative, was synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic methods. This Se-nitrososelenol can be formed by direct transnitrosation from an S-nitrosothiol to a selenol, as is the case in the proposed mechanism for the NO-mediated inactivation of GPx.

Amphoteric and controllable doping of carbon nanotubes by encapsulation of organic and organometallic molecules.

By using first principles calculations, we show that fine tuning of both p- and n-type doping can be realized on single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by tuning the electron affinity or ionization potential of the organic and organometallic molecules encapsulated inside SWNTs. This novel type of SWNT-based material offers great promise for molecular electronics because of its air stability, synthetic simplicity and the abundance of organic and organometallic molecules.

Isolation, characterization, and theoretical study of La2@C78.

A new metallofullerene, La2@C78, has been synthesized by DC arc discharge method, isolated by high-performance liquid chromatography, and characterized by laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry, UV-vis-NIR absorption, differential pulse voltammetry, 13C NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The La2@C78/CS2 solution is dark violet and presents several characteristic absorption features at 647, 561, 533, and 386 nm, with an onset around 1000 nm. With respect to empty D3-C78, the capability of La2@C78 as an electron acceptor or donor is stronger. Addition of 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-1,2-disirane to La2@C78 photochemically, as well as thermally, affords bis- and mono-adducts. Theoretical studies and 13C NMR spectroscopic analysis of La2@C78 indicate that it possesses a D3h-C78 cage (78:5).

Characterization of Ce@C82 and its anion.

Ce@C(82) is isolated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the cage symmetry is determined as C(2)(v)() by measuring the (13)C NMR spectra of its anion. The (13)C NMR peaks of [Ce@C(82)](-) show temperature-dependent shifts ascribed to the f electron remaining on the Ce atom. Both Ce@C(82) and [Ce@C(82)](-) are silent in electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) because of the highly anisotropic g matrix as well as of the fast relaxation process originating from the orbital angular momentum of the f electron. This is the complementary relationship to the observation of the paramagnetic shift in (13)C NMR. [Ce@C(82)](-) has lower stability in air than [La@C(82)](-).

A bowl-shaped fullerene encapsulates a water into the cage.

The sequential carbon-carbon bond cleaving reactions of the diketone derivative of C60 with o-phenylenediamine give a novel bowl-shaped fullerene bearing a 20-membered ring orifice. The product reversibly encapsulates a water molecule into the fullerene cage for the first time.

Ca at C82 isomers: computed temperature dependency of relative concentrations.

Relative concentrations of nine isomers of Ca at C82 derived from the C82 isolated-pentagon-rule satisfying cages are computed in a wide temperature interval. The computations are based on the Gibbs energy constructed from partition functions supplied with molecular parameters from density functional theory calculations. Five structures show significant populations at higher temperatures: C2v > Cs > C2 > C3v > Cs. The computed relative stabilities agree well with available observations.

Lanthanum endohedral metallofulleropyrrolidines: synthesis, isolation, and EPR characterization.

Lanthanum endohedral metallofulleropyrrolidines have been synthesized for the first time through addition of an azomethine ylide to La@C(82)-A in toluene. It was found that the addition reaction is very efficient and, to some extent, regioselective. Two major endohedral metallofulleropyrrolidines, a monoadduct and a bisadduct of La@C(82)-A with abundance ratio of approximately 1:0.4, have been isolated by HPLC chromatography and characterized by mass spectrometry, UV/Vis-NIR absorption, and EPR spectroscopy. The electronic structure of La@C(82)-A has been modified slightly upon monoaddition and significantly upon bisaddition of the pyrrolidines.

Spherical sila- and germa-homoaromaticity.

Guided by the 2(N + 1)2 electron-counting rule for spherical aromatic molecules, we have designed various spherical sila- and germa-homoaromatic systems rich in group 14 elements. Their aromaticity is revealed by density-functional computations of their structures and the nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS). Besides the formerly used endohedral inclusion strategy, spherical homoaromaticity is another way to stabilize silicon and germanium clusters.
