[Studies on circadian susceptibility rhythm to haloperidol (author's transl)].

Rats were given haloperidol in a variety of doses and time combinations and the sedation period were then measured. A clear-cut daily fluctuation in the sedative effect was observed, and the pattern of fluctuation differed depending on the dosage. In an attempt to elucidate the mechanism of this phenomenon, haloperidol was administered at two different times between which there was a significant difference in the sedation period. No difference was found. Thus it is presumed that daily fluctuation in the sedative effect of haloperidol may be ascribed not to the daily fluctuation in the levels of absorption, excretion, metabolism, or distribution of this drug, but rather to the daily fluctuation at the level of catecholamine receptors in the brain. There was a daily fluctuation in the antiapomorphine effect of haloperidol in a variety of doses and time combinations, and the pattern of fluctuation almost equaled that of the sedative effects of haloperidol. The daily fluctuation of the sedative effect is probably due to effects of circadian rhythm in brain dopamine receptors.

Total prosthetic replacement of a humerus for chronic osteomyelitis with a pathological fracture. Report of a case.

A case is reported four years after successful total replacement of the left humerus for chronic osteomyelitis of six years' duration, with an axillary sinus that had persisted despite repeated operations and more distally a pathological fracture that had failed to united after bone grafting. The disability was such that the patient had requested amputation, but he returned to his previous work as a driver six months after the total replacement and there has been no recurrence of infection.

An improved procedure for the isolation of suprasterol2 I and II from a photochemical reaction mixture of ergocalciferol (vitamin D2).

An improved procedure for the isolateion suprasterol2 I and II from a photochemical reaction mixture of ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and their spectral data are described in this paper. When a solution of ergocalciferol in ethanol was irradiated by UV light from a high-pressure mercury lamp, the reaction mixture gave six spots, including suprasterol2 I and II, on the thin-layer chromatogram, while the peaks corresponding to pyro-D2, isopyro-D2,5,b-trans-D2, suprasterol 2 I and II were observed in the gas chromatogram obtained from a capillary column GLC (Suprasterol2 I and II were main peaks). After purifying the mixture by column chromatography on silica gel containing 12% alumina as an absorbent, two main fractins were isolated. The data of their spectra, TLC and GLC showed that the former fraction was suprasterol2 II while the latter was suprasterol2 I and that the both fractions contained the respective compound only. Both suprasterol2 were crystallized as the 3,5-dinitro-benzoates.
