Abnormalities of the brainstem auditory response of the dog associated with equilibrium deficit and seizure.

The brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was recorded from 20 dogs, 10 exhibited vestibular deficit, and 10 presented with a history of seizures. Two dogs exhibited both types of signs. Abnormalities of the BAER, prolonged interwave latency, were seen in 8 of the 10 animals with vestibular problems, and in 7 of the 10 animals with seizure history. Several different diagnosis were associated with BAER abnormalities in both groups of animals. In 55.5% of the cases exhibiting abnormalities of the BAER, postmortem evidence of brainstem pathology was not detected. The electroencephalogram (EEG) was normal in three instances of abnormalities of the BAER. The BAER was normal in three dogs with abnormalities of the EEG. The BAER is presented as a useful diagnostic tool for brain lesions in animals with vestibular deficit and seizure history, but appears most useful when used in conjunction with the EEG. Correlations of abnormalities of the BAER and clinical course of disease are discussed.

Evaluation of symptoms of major depressive disorder. Self-report vs. clinician ratings.

The authors examine the relationship between self-reported and interviewer ratings of individual symptoms of major depressive disorder. The overall rate of agreement between the self-reported and clinician ratings was about 80% for 14 of the 18 symptoms, and the median Kappa for determining the presence or absence of the symptoms was .62. Disagreement was greatest for psychomotor disturbance, decreased concentration, and indecisiveness. The authors discuss how the unreliability of interviewer assessments limits the amount of agreement between self-reported and clinician ratings.

Emotional and physical health problems of battered women.

The present study focused on the emotional and physical health problems of battered women by comparing a sample of residents in shelters with a group of women in the community matched for family income, length of marriage, and number of children on the General Health Questionnaire. The results indicated that battered women report a significantly higher level of somatic complaints, anxiety, and depression. These effects tended to be associated with other life stressors and children with serious behavior problems. The implications of the study are discussed in terms of assessing the needs of battered women and their children as well as being vigilant for family violence as an etiological factor for other presenting problems.

Reference values of the brainstem auditory evoked response of methoxyflurane anesthetized and unanesthetized dogs.

The brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was recorded from 7 unanesthetized and 27 methoxyflurane anesthetized dogs. A 0.1 msec, 70 dB stimulus delivered at 10 Hz evoked the expected seven wave BAER. Mean peak wave latencies and standard deviations were calculated. Differences were not found between neither right and left ears, nor male and female dogs. The anesthetized dogs had a significantly longer latency for all waves, except wave I, than the unanesthetized dogs. Use of the BAER as a diagnostic technique for brainstem lesions is recommended.

Tracheal chondrosarcoma with an overview of other tumors of the trachea.

Chondrosarcomas of the trachea are extraordinarily rare tumors, with only four cases documented in the English literature. An additional case is reported with conventional and computed tomography correlation. Because primary tumors of the trachea are such rare neoplasms, a review of the subject is presented to put chondrosarcomas of the trachea into perspective. Malignant tumors are slightly more common than benign tumors of the trachea and occur more frequently in adults. The most common tumor involving the trachea is carcinoma, accounting for 80 to 90% of all cases. This, however, represents only 0.2% of all malignancies of the respiratory tract.

Characterization of two epitopes on insulin using monoclonal antibodies.

Three monoclonal antibodies (MAb), 21 (IgG1), I10 (IgG1) and H38 (IgG2b), to insulin have been tested for cross-reactivity with 11 species variants of insulin and three of proinsulin. Correlations of differences of reactivities between the MAb and the species variants of insulin with the respective amino acid sequences of the latter have permitted the identification of two epitopes recognized by the MAb which encompass the regions in the A- and B-chains of insulin subject to frequent evolutionary amino acid substitutions. MAb 21 and H38 are directed to an epitope which includes residues B27-30 and A1 or A4 and can discriminate between human and pig insulins which differ only at B30. MAb 21 reacts with human (B30 thr) but not with pig (B30 ala) insulins, whereas MAb H38 exhibits a reciprocal specificity. Neither MAb 21 nor MAb H38 react with human or pig proinsulins respectively indicating that the presence of the C-peptide joining A1 to B30 masks the epitope. MAb 21 reacts with human insulin 125I-labeled at tyr A14 but not B26 suggesting that incorporation of the I atom at B26 also masks the epitope. MAb I10 is directed to an epitope which includes A8-10 and A4 or B3 with a specificity for the human A8-10 sequence. MAb I10 reacts with human proinsulin and human insulin 125I-labeled at either tyr A14 or B26.

Cells transformed with a ts viral src mutant are temperature sensitive for in vivo growth.

Studies on ts mutants of avian sarcoma viruses have previously implicated the src gene product (pp60src) kinase function in in vitro transformation. The role of src in vivo, however, has not been clearly defined. Using a sensitive and quantitative assay that was developed in chicken embryos (Chambers et al., Cancer Res. 42:4018-4025, 1982), we tested the in vivo tumorigenic properties of cells transformed with LA23, an avian sarcoma virus that is temperature sensitive for in vitro transformation. We found that the in vivo growth ability of these cells was temperature sensitive and that this in vivo behavior correlated with the in vitro transformation behavior (growth in soft agar and saturation density).

Assessing the needs of the elderly using unsolicited visits by health visitors.

Thirty-five percent of patients over 70 years old who received an unsolicited visit by a health visitor were found to have previously unidentified needs. In all, 71% of the 110 patients surveyed were found to have problems involving mobility, communication or caring for themselves. Most of their needs were social ones. It was concluded that unsolicited visiting by health visitors was efficient use of time by members of the primary health care team. Changes in practice administration are suggested to improve access to medical care for elderly patients.
