Forty-five patients with uncomplicated rheumatoid arthritis and 45 control individuals were subjected to immunochemical investigation of the urinary excretion of renal tubular basement membrane antigen (TBM), renal tubular epithelial antigen (RTE), and beta-2-microglobulin. Tubular proteinuria occurred significantly more frequently in patients treated with gold salts than in those not treated (P less than 0.05). Large amounts of RTE and TBM were detected only in the urine of patients who received gold salt therapy. However, the amounts of these proteins in urine did no correlate with the total dose of gold. These results indicate that renal tubular damage frequently occurs in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who are treated with gold salts; the tests outlined are useful in detecting renal tubular disorders developing during gold salt therapy and have certain advantages over routine urinalysis.

In the brain tumors hormone dependency has long been suggested from the evidence that meningiomas and neurinomas are frequently seen in female and that they enlarge during pregnancy presumably as a result of hormonal change. Recently the presence of estrogen receptor (ER) in meningiomas, neurinomas and pituitary adenomas were documented in some preliminary reports. In this report we estimated the ER in the tissue of 15 patients with meningiomas (13 females and 2 males) and 5 with neurinomas (2 females and 3, males). The estrogen receptor level was determined by Scatchard analysis. The results were obtained as follows: In meningiomas, 80% (4/5) of premenopausal females, 25% (2/8) of postmenopausal females and 0% (0/2) of males had receptor activity. Maximal binding sites (Bm; fmol/mg cytosol protein) and dissociation constant (Kd; x 10(-10)M) are as follows: Bm=20.8+/-12.2 (premenopause; n=4) or 22.8 (postmenopause; n=2) and Kd=2.8+/-0.7 (premenopause) or 6.9 (postmenopause). In neurinoma, 33% (1/3) of males and 0% (0/2) of females had receptor activity. Bm and Kd are as follows: Bm=25.0 and Kd=2.3. The ER detectable rate in meningiomas was much higher in premenopausal females. There was a suggestion that some brain tumors are responsible to estrogen via cellular estrogen receptor.
In human pregnancy, maternal and umbilical blood of the 22nd week of pregnancy and of the parturition were submitted to the analysis of total free amino acids (FAA) by amino acids analyzer. In addition, the neonatal blood was also submitted until 9 days after birth. The content of FAA in umbilical vein was higher than that of the maternal blood and it decreased at the parturition. However, the content of taurine (T) kept extremely higher level than other amino acids until term and it decreased to the normal level at 9 days after birth. In pregnant rats on day 17, 18 and 19 of gestation, the content of FAA in umbilical vein and fetal artery were 5800-7000 micrograms/dl and 5700-6250 micrograms/dl, respectively. They were two fold higher than that of maternal value. In amniotic fluid, FAA was 4100 micrograms/dl on day 18 and 8850 micrograms/dl on day 20. On the contrary, the content of T in maternal blood on day 18 was the highest value (360 micrograms /dl), and decreased to the half of the value on day 20. T in carotid artery on the same day was 1150 micrograms/dl, but it decreased to 280 micrograms/dl on day 20. In amniotic fluid, it was almost constant in the range of 380-400 micrograms/dl. When the pregnant rat was stressed by starvation, FAA was increased in both umbilical and fetal blood but it was almost constant in amniotic fluid. T was increased both in maternal and fetal blood. When the degree of starvation, T value also increased in fetal blood. From these data, we discussed on the possible mechanism of the production of T during pregnancy and after birth.

Following horseradish peroxidase injections into the optic tectum of a teleost, Navodon modestus, reciprocal and topographic projections between the nucleus isthmi and the ipsilateral optic tectum were determined. The isthmo-tectal fibers diverge to the optic tectum while maintaining the spatial arrangements of the isthmic cells from which the fibers originate. The tecto-isthmic projections also keep the spatial arrangements in the optic tectum. The tectal fibers converge near the nucleus isthmi and terminate in the non-cellular portion of the nucleus. The reciprocal topography is apparent in the combined results of 9 experiments with one tectal injection in each region. No labeled cells and fibers were found in the contralateral nucleus isthmi.
Urine specimens from 50 patients with various renal diseases and from 10 normal subjects were examined for the presence of low molecular mass (7S) IgM by double diffusion, using a specific anti-7S IgM serum. 7S IgM in urine was also quantitated by radial immunodiffusion in 5% polyacrylamide gel. It was found with high frequency in the urine of patients with secondary renal diseases associated with multi-system immunological disorders, especially in systemic lupus erythematosus. Two of the patients with lupus nephritis and positive results for 7S IgM in urine were initially diagnosed as nephrotic syndrome due to a primary renal disease; the symptoms and signs of systemic lupus erythematosus developed later. However, 7S IgM was not detected in the urine of patients with primary renal diseases (except for two cases of nephrotic syndrome), nor in normal subjects. Thus detection of 7S IgM in urine may be helpful in the differential diagnosis of primary and secondary renal diseases.
Human liver specific F antigen has been purified from human liver and characterized by immunochemical and physicochemical procedures. Specific antisera were prepared by immunizing guinea pigs with the purified human F antigen. The purified F antigen had a molecular mass of approximately 80000 daltons. Using the immunodiffusion technique, it was shown that human F antigen has at least two antigenic determinants; one is species non-specific and the other human specific. This human specific determinant was also found in the liver of rhesus monkey but not in the liver of the other mammals tested. Using purified human F antigen and antibody against the human specific determinant, F antigen can be quantitated in serum and may prove to be of clinical value.

The folic acid (FA) levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 39 chronic alcoholics, 15 methamphetamine addicts and 18 control subjects were determined using the technique of Lactobacillus casei assay. Twelve of the 39 alcoholics developed delirium tremens (DT) after determination of the FA level. The serum FA level of the alcoholics with DT was significantly lower than that of the controls, and showed a tendency to be lower than in the alcoholics without DT. The CSF FA of the DT group was significantly lower than that of the control group and of the alcoholics without DT. In the methamphetamine addicts, although the serum FA was significantly lower than that of the controls, the CSF FA remained unchanged. All the methamphetamine addicts demonstrated psychological dependence and tolerance development as did the alcoholics, but they did not show any physical dependence. From these results, a mechanism underlying the development of symptoms of physical dependence such as DT was discussed in relation to the CSF FA.
Electrophoretic analysis on sodium pyrophosphate gels of myosin light chain 1 (LC-1; 27,000 daltons) from rabbit ventricular heart muscle revealed the presence of two distinct components named LC-1a (10%) and LC-1b (90%). After thyroxine administration, a shift toward LC-1a (45%) was observed. Canine cardiac ventricular light chain 1 (27,000 daltons) had equal amounts of LC-1a' (50%) and LC-1b' (50%), which corresponded to LC-1a and LC-1b of rabbit heart, respectively. However, heterogeneity of light chain 2 (20,000 daltons) was not observed. It is concluded that cardiac ventricular myosin has two heterogeneous 27,000 dalton-light chains and that the proportion of these proteins varies according to the thyroid status and animal species.
Adult Wistar rats were treated with 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA, 200-500 micrograms) by intraventricular injection. Two, five, seven or 14 days after the injection, the effects of 6-OHDA on rat behavior and the brain ultrastructure were observed. The increased irritability and the tendency of a decrease in self-grooming along with a reduced spontaneous movement were found in rats given 6-OHDA. The main ultrastructural alterations were observed in the nerve terminals localized in the catecholaminergic neurons, particularly the hypothalamic axon terminals. These ultrastructural changes might relate to the behavioral abnormalities in the animals.
The effects of some autonomic drugs on the isolated human minor calyceal strips were investigated quantitatively. Norepinephrine, epinephrine and phenylephrine dose dependently increased the basal tone and the frequency of spontaneous contractions and decreased their amplitudes, which were depressed by phentolamine. Acetylcholine at high doses increased the basal tone and decreased the amplitude, which were depressed by atropine without changing the frequency. These findings indicate the existence of alpha-adrenoceptors and muscarinic receptors in the human minor calyceal smooth muscles.
