Transplantation of the reversed dermis from skin leading to repair of the buccal mucosal epithelium.

Skin grafting or mucosal grafting has been widely applied as the established method to compensate mucosal defects. However, in the grafted skin the epidermis never transformed into the mucosal epithelium; the original nature of the transplant was maintained as skin. The available donor of mucosa is also strictly limited. Therefore, an improvement in method has been much needed in the field of oral surgery. We tried to transplant the dermis freed completely from the epidermis instead of the full-thickness skin, and succeeded in compensation of the mucosal defect. The defects of the buccal mucosa in 30 dogs were repaired, one side with reversed dermis graft (RDG) in which the dermis was turned inside out and sutured onto the bed. On the other side, the ordinary free full-thickness skin graft (FTSG) was carried out as a control. Comparative clinical and histological observations were conducted to analyze the healing processes. In RDG the graft was covered by the surrounding mucosal epithelium to form the mucosal tissue, while the implanted tissue inhibited the wound constricture. Histological examination revealed that the epithelial elements underwent degeneration, presumably through being embedded by the grafting of the dermis inside out. The epithelium covering the dermis graft seems to be nothing but normal oral mucosal epithelium.

Aicardi's syndrome - report of an autopsy case.

A Japanese girl aged 19 months had generalized convulsions, agenesis of the corpus callosum, peculiar chorioretinopathy, scoliosis and marked retardation of psychomotor development. Pathological investigation revealed polymicrogyria, cortical heterotopias, disorganization of the cerebellar cortex. In ocular histopathology, lacunae were composed of hypo- or depigmented zones of the retinal pigment epithelium accompanied with dispersion of pigments into the rod and cone layer. Coloboma of the optic nerve was also evident. There was no evidence of inflammation or pathogenic organisms.

A new device for free skin grafting in rats.

We have employed this device in more than 200 grafting operations with complete success. Its advantage is to avoid the variation of fixing pressure on the grafts that greatly interferes with the experimental results. In addition, this method allows us to inspect the graft during the first week without having to remove the protector each time, which helped us greatly. We have presented a new device for skin grafting in rats that allows us to obtain temporary stabilization and protection of a skin graft. In addition, it allows us to inspect the graft without having to remove the protector.

The effect of butoctamide hydrogen succinate on nocturnal sleep: all-night polygraphical studies.

Butoctamide hydrogen succinate (BAHS), related to an organic compound naturally occurring in the central nervous system (CNS), has been shown to increase REM sleep in chronically prepared cats. In the present study, we confirmed that BAHS increases REM sleep in healthy humans, the subjects were six males whose mean age was 21 years and the experiment covered eight consecutive nights. Identical capsules containing either a placebo (linolenic acid) or 600 mg BAHS were administered 1 h prior to recording, which was started at 11 p.m. There was little change in total sleep time, sleep efficiency index, sleep latency, REM sleep latency, or the number of REM sleep periods during the drug- as compared to the baseline periods. There were, however, significant increases in REM sleep and decreases in sleep stages 1 and 2. The night's sleep was divided into three equal portions and analysis of the percentage of sleep stages in each showed that REM sleep markedly increased in the middle third while stages 3 and 4 increased in the last third. A carryover effect of BAHS was recognized during the withdrawal period. The maximum percentage of BAHS-induced REM sleep was 34%. REM density during the drug periods tended to decrease. These results suggest that BAHS may be an efficacious hypnotic in that it increases REM sleep which is suppressed by other clinically used hypnotics.
