Ultrasonographic studies on abdominal complications in patients receiving marrow-ablative chemotherapy and bone marrow or blood stem cell transplantation.

Abdominal complications were evaluated with ultrasonography in 20 patients who received marrow-ablative chemotherapy and bone marrow or blood stem cell transplantation for the treatment of hematologic malignancies. Ultrasonographic findings compatible with veno-occlusive disease of the liver, cytomegalovirus infection of the colon, hepatic lesion of graft-versus-host disease, and cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis were demonstrated in 6 of these patients. In addition, ascites, pleural effusion, gall bladder wall thickening, and hepatosplenomegaly were easily detected. Since ultrasonography is noninvasive and can be repeated, ultrasonographic studies are useful for evaluating and monitoring abdominal complications which are frequently encountered in these transplant patients.

Polymorphonuclear leukocytes-mediated lysis of A431 cells induced by IgG1 mouse anti-epidermal growth factor receptor monoclonal antibodies.

The ability of different Fc receptors (Fc gamma R) on IgG-mediated cytotoxicity for human epidermoid carcinoma A431 cells bearing large number of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) was examined by using two isotypes (IgG1 and IgG2a) of murine monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) against EGFR in the presence of human monocytes and granulocytes. Two MoAbs (225 and LA1) of the IgG1 isotype exhibited effective cytolytic activity for A431 cells with human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) rather than with human mononuclear cells (MNC). In contrast, two MoAbs (528 and 579) of the IgG2a-isotype lysed the cells less effectively with PMN than with MNC. Anti-Fc gamma R II (CDw32) MoAb 2E1 inhibited the IgG1-mediated cytotoxicity by PMN, and anti-Fc gamma R III (CD16) MoAb 80H3 did not inhibit the IgG2a-mediated cytotoxicity by MNC. Under these conditions, antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity by mouse MoAb IgG1 isotypes resulted from antibody binding to the Fc gamma R II (CDw32) of PMN.

The change in body composition after bilateral lung volume reduction surgery for underweight patients with severe emphysema.

The aim of this study was to examine the short-term effect of lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) on body composition and other nutritional indicators in 28 patients with emphysema underwent thoracoscopic LVRS. Functional tests, body weight (BW), and body composition were measured before and 6 months after surgery. Mean daily caloric intake (CI) was estimated by 3-day dietary record as well. Fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) were assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). FEV1.0 and VO2max have improved after LVRS by 35.2% and 23.8%, respectively. Preoperatively, 75% of patients were underweight (% ideal body weight (%IBW) <90) with the mean %IBW at 84.5%. BW, CI, and FFM increased significantly after LVRS, whereas FM was unchanged. The change in BW correlated significantly with the change in FEV1.0, MVV, and VO2max (p < 0.01) but not with CI. Bilateral LVRS results in an increase in FFM and functional improvement for underweight patients with severe emphysema, and it may contribute to the improvement in maximal exercise capacity.

Treatment of PCB-contaminated soil in a pilot-scale continuous decomposition system.

The BCDP (Base Catalyzed Decomposition Process) is a process by which difficult-to-decompose organic chlorine compounds, such as PCBs, are chemically decomposed and dechlorinated. Pilot-plant tests for PCB contaminated soil were carried out. PCB contaminated soil (32 mg/kg-530 mg/kg) was decontaminated to a level (0.038 mg/kg-4.8 mg/kg) which satisfied the corresponding Japanese environmental standard which stipulates, "there must be no discharge of PCB containing leachate".

Lupus erythematosus panniculitis in a patient with autoimmune hepatitis.

Lupus erythematosus panniculitis (profundus), a rare variant of chronic panniculitis, sometimes develops during the course of discoid lupus erythematosus or systemic lupus erythematosus. A 61-year-old woman had suffered from autoimmune hepatitis type I for 5 years. Prednisolone had been administered as maintenance therapy and her hepatitis had been well controlled. However, asymptomatic erythematous indurated nodules developed symmetrically in both pre-auricular regions, and skin biopsy revealed lupus erythematosus panniculitis (profundus). Increase in dosage of prednisolone resolved the skin lesion, leaving depressed atrophic scars. This is the first report of lupus erythematosus panniculitis complicating autoimmune hepatitis.
