Meckel's diverticulum. Investigation of 600 patients in Japanese literature.

A total of 600 cases, comprising 4 of our cases and 596 others in Japan, was analyzed, and the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum was made in only 34 of them. The rate of diagnosis was 5.7 per cent, which is very low. The most common complication of this disease was intestinal obstruction, the second most common was intussusception, the third was inflammation, and the fourth was rectal bleeding. Ectopic tissue, present in ninety-three patients, consisted of ectopic gastric mucosa in fifty-eight. 99mTc-P scanning was performed on fifteen patients. In twelve of them ectopic gastric mucosa was observed. However, it was not found in three, all of whom had false-positive scans.

Behavior of a vigorous alpha- or beta-hemolysin-producing strain of Staphylococcus aureus in the cutaneous tissue of mice.

Two strains of Staphylococcus aureus were examined for behavior in the cutaneous tissue of mice by the fluorescent antibody technique, hematoxylin and eosin staining. When about 10(8) viable cells of an alpha-hemolysin-producing strain (Wood 46) were inoculated subcutaneously into a mouse, they multiplied in the subcutaneous tissue of the mouse and gradually entered the corium to produce alpha-hemolysin and nuclease. Edematous and necrotic lesions were observed in the cutaneous tissue where the organisms had multiplied. When 10(8) viable cells of a beta-hemolysin-producing strain (Kitami 3-9D) were inoculated into a mouse, they multiplied within a narrow extent surrounded mainly by infiltrating leukocytes and produced mainly beta-hemolysin. The changes of cutaneous tissue were weaker in mice inoculated with Kitami 3-9D strain than in mice inoculated with strain Wood 46. When 10(6) viable cells of both strains were inoculated into mice, they were phagocytized by leukocytes. Neither multiplication of organisms nor production of any active extracellular substance was observed in these mice. Edema, degeneration, and necrosis were also noticed in the cutaneous tissue of mice inoculated with alpha- and beta-hemolysin. In addition, the infiltration of leukocytes was inhibited mainly by alpha-hemolysin.

Interdigestive motor activity of Heidenhain pouches in relation to main stomach in conscious dogs.

A great number of studies using Heidenhain pouches have been reported, but most of them have been concerned with secretory activity. Studies on the motor activity of the pouch are few, and our knowledge about it is rather limited. In the present study, therefore, long-term changes in contractile activity of the Heidenhain pouches were recorded simultaneously with those of the main stomach in conscious dogs by means of chronically implanted force transducers. It was found that during the interdigestive state Heidenhain pouches contracted precisely in association with the main stomach. During this time a series of strong contractions arose simultaneously in the Heidenhain pouch and the main stomach, lasted for 24.2 +/- 1.90 min, and then ceased abruptly. Such strong contractions were followed by a long period of motor quiescence lasting for 86.9 +/- 6.06 min. These characteristic recurring episodes in the Heidenhain pouch and the main stomach lasted during the interdigestive state but were inhibited by the ingestion of food or intravenous administration of pentagastrin. These findings indicate that the interdigestive motor activity of the stomach is strongly controlled by a humoral factor(s) rather than the parasympathetic nervous system; however, we also propose a possible role for the sympathetic nervous system for coordinated occurrence of the interdigestive contractions between the Heidenhain pouch and the main stomach.

Effectiveness of immunization with single and multi-component vaccines prepared from a common antigen (OEP), protease and elastase toxoids of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on protection against hemorrhagic pneumonia in mink due to P. aeruginosa.

Toxoids of protease and elastase of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were successfully prepared by treatment with 8% formalin plus 0.2 m lysine and by 4% formalin respectively. The two toxoids proved sufficiently potent to elicit high antibody titers as estimated by both the enzyme-neutralizing and passive hemagglutination tests. The effectiveness of immunizing minks with a single component-vaccine consisting of the common antigen (OEP) of P. aeruginosa or the protease toxoid (PT) or the elastase toxoid (ET) and with the two (PT and ET) or the three (OEP, PT and ET) component-mixed vaccines, on hemorrhagic pneumonia in minks due to the bacteria was investigated. Female Sapphire minks, 3.5 months old, were used in two experiments performed in 1975 and 1976. Minks were immunized three times in one month with a total of 1 mg of each of the three antigens in the case of a single component vaccine and with a total of 2 or 3 mg (equal amounts of each component) in the case of the two or three component vaccines. Two or three weeks after the last immunization, challenge exposure with strain No. 5 was carried out by intranasally inoculating an inoculum containing serial dilutions of 10(3) -10(10) of live bacteria. Summarizing the results of the two experiments, in the case of controls, nonimmunized minks and minks immunized with potassium aluminum sulfate (potash alum) alone, the LD50 values were approximately 10(3) -10(4) with no significant difference between the two. In the case of OEP-vaccinated minks, the LD50 value was about 10(6) and thus clearly differed from those of the controls. In minks immunized with the three-component-vaccine, however, the LD50 value was about 10(8) -10(9), which indicated that the three-component-mixed vaccine was remarkably more effective than the single OEP vaccine component. In minks immunized with either PT or ET or both, the LD50 values were about 10(8) -10(9). The effectiveness of the vaccine made with ET or PT alone is discussed in the text. The pathological findings of the minks which died or survived are described.

Diurnal changes in gastric motor activity in conscious dogs.

Twenty-four-hour changes in gastric motor activity were recorded in 4 healthy adult dogs in the conscious state by means of extraluminal force transducers. Three major different gastric motor activity patterns were recognized during 24 hr: digestive, intermediate, and interdigestive. The digestive pattern was characterized by steady low-amplitude contractions in the gastric antrum, with no significant motor activity in the gastric body. The interdigestive pattern consisted of series of high-amplitude contractions of 14-23 min duration in both the gastric body and antrum with intervening and long-lasting (68-109 min) motor quiescence. The intermediate pattern is considered to be the pattern midway when the digestive pattern is changing to the interdigestive pattern. These changes in gastric motor activity are precisely controlled day after day if the animals are fed at regular time intervals and are healthy. The digestive pattern may represent principally a mixing function of ingested food and the interdigestive pattern a cleaning function in preparation for the next meal

Effect of synthetic motilin on gastric motor activity in conscious dogs.

The effect of intravenous infusion of synthetic motilin on gastric motor activity was investigated by means of chronically implanted force transducers in 4 conscious dogs. Since the gastric motor pattern consisted of two major subpatterns, digestive and interdigestive motor activity, motilin was tested for its motor stimulating activity in both states. It was found that motilin had no influence upon gastric motor activity in the digestive state. However, during the interdigestive state, intravenous infusion of motilin in doses of 0.3-2.7 microgram/kg/hr induced motor activity similar to the naturally occurring interdigestive contractions in a dose-related fashion. Since motilin is released by duodenal alkalinization in the dog, it may be postulated that motilin is a substance to control the interdigestive contractions in the dog, although other reports describe motilin release by duodenal acidification and inhibition of gastric emptying in man. Endogenous stimuli leading to motilin release may be different among species. The present study clearly indicates that motilin induces a contractile pattern similar to that seen during the interdigestive state in conscious dogs.
