A clinical survey was performed on 24 cases of primary ureteral tumors treated in our University Hospital between Jan. 1972 and Dec. 1981. The incidence of primary ureteral tumors was 0.17% among the outpatients in our urologic clinic. The patients ranged from 41 to 84 years old in age (average age: 65 years), and the male to female ratio was 3 to 1. The left ureter and the lower third of the ureter were involved more frequently. The most frequent initial symptom was macrohematuria seen in 19 cases (79%), followed by loin pain seen in 6 cases (25%). A cytologic study of the voided urine or ureteral urine was carried out in 18 cases and positive results were obtained in 9 cases (50%). Cystoscopic examination revealed a tumor protruding through the ureteral orifice in 16.7% (4 of 24 cases), followed by bulging orifice in 8.3% (2 of 24 cases). Excretory pyelography showed ureteral filling defects in 41.7% (10 of 24 cases). Retrograde pyelography showed ureteral filling defects in 100% (10 of 10 cases). CT showed a mass region in 44.4% (4 of 9 cases). A total of 14 patients underwent nephroureterectomy with partial or total cystectomy (66.7%). The overall 5-year-survival rate was 56.5% and could be directly associated with grade and stage of tumors.

DNA plasmids were detected in two independent strains of Saccharomyces rouxii among 100 yeast strains other than Saccharomyces cerevisiae tested. The plasmids, pSR1 and pSR2, had almost the same mass (approximately 4 X 10(6) daltons) as 2-micrometers DNA of S. cerevisiae. pSR1 and pSR2 gave identical restriction maps with restriction endonucleases BamHI, EcoRI, HincII, HindIII, and XhoI, and both lacked restriction sites for PstI, SalI, and SmaI. These maps, however, differed significantly from that of S. cerevisiae 2-micrometers DNA. Restriction analysis also revealed two isomeric forms of each plasmid and suggested the presence of a pair of inverted repeat sequences in the molecules where intramolecular recombination took place. DNA-DNA hybridization between the pSR1 and pSR2 DNAs indicated significant homology between their base sequences, whereas no homology was detected between pSR1 and pJDB219, a chimeric plasmid constructed from a whole molecule of 2-micrometers DNA, plasmid pMB9, and a 1.2-kilobase DNA fragment of S. cerevisiae bearing the LEU2 gene. A chimeric plasmid constructed with pSR1 and YIp1, the larger EcoRI-SalI fragment of pBR322 ligated with a 6.1-kilobase DNA fragment of S. cerevisiae bearing the HIS3 gene, could replicate autonomously in an S. cerevisiae host and produced isomers, presumably by intramolecular recombination at the inverted repeats.
Neuromuscular transmission was studied in neonatal mice following injection with serum globulin of patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). Compared to controls, these mice showed significant reduction in successive muscle action potentials evoked by repetitive nerve stimulation, amplitude of miniature endplate potentials, and postjunctional sensitivity to acetylcholine. There was no change in evoked isometric tension, quantal content of endplate potentials, or input resistance of the endplate membrane. These results confirm earlier reports of neuromuscular block in animals following injection of globulin of myasthenic patients, and demonstrate that decrease in amplitude of evoked potentials and of miniature endplate potentials is due to reduction in sensitivity to acetylcholine rather than in input resistance of the postsynaptic membrane. These findings are compatible with a postsynaptic defect in MG caused by a humorally mediated autoimmune mechanism.

Computed tomographic feature of uterine carcinoma were described based on our own experience of 40 cases (cervix 35, body 5) and on the review of the recent articles. It was found to be not always possible to detect tumor infiltration not only at the cervix but lateral extension to the parametrium on CT. CT was quite effective, however, the diagnosis of iliac-paraaortic lymph node metastasis and invasion into the bladder and/or the rectum. Increased fibrous tissue and perirectal fat were the commonest postirradiation changes seen on CT. CT was the only measure to clarify surgical complication in some cases.
A series of 5',5-disubstituted 3-biphenylylacetic acids (5a-n) and several alpha-methyl derivatives (5o-v) were prepared as analogues of a newly developed nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent, 5'-chloro-5-methoxy-3-biphenylylacetic acid [1 (DKA-9), R = 4-C1Ph; R' = Me], and evaluated for antiinflammatory and analgesic activities using both carrageenan rat paw edema and AcOH writhing assays. Among them, 5-fluoro-3-biphenylylacetic acid (5m) showed the highest antiinflammatory activity, while 2-(3-biphenylyl)propionic acid (5o) showed the highest analgesic activity. However, they were less potent than 1 (R = 4-C1Ph; R' = Me) in these assays.
The positional isomers 3a-i of 4'-chloro-5-methoxy-3-biphenylylacetic acid [1 (DKA-9), R = 4-ClPh; R' = MeO] which is a newly developed nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent, have been prepared and evaluated for antiinflammatory and analgesic activities using both the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and AcOH writhing assays. The 3- and 4-biphenylylacetic acids 3a,d, which closely resemble 1 (R = 4-ClPh, R' = MeO) structurally, showed, by far, excellent activities compared with the other isomers in these assays. However, none of the compounds tested was more active than 1 (R = 4-ClPh; R' = MeO). In this series of compounds, structural requirements for good antiinflammatory activity seemed to be parallel to those for analgesic activity.
