The difference spectra of binary and ternary complexes of horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase with oxidized and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides, nicotinamide 1,N6-ethenoadenine dinucleotide, and adenosine diphosphate ribose along with a number of substrate analogues have been measured. These spectra bear a very close resemblance to those obtained by perturbation of the coenzyme(s) and their analogues by acid, NaCl, dioxane, or tert-butyl alcohol. It is inferred that the coenzymes experience a combination of ionic and nonpolar environments at the adenine binding site of the enzyme. This is borne out by published X-ray crystallographic results. The phosphorescence spectra do not indicate the presence of ionized tyrosine in ternary complexes invovling enzyme, coenzyme, and substrate analogues. The ultraviolet spectra can be explained as arising from the perturbation of the coenzyme chromophores upon binding to the enzyme without having to invoke tyrosine ionization.

Three cases of rhinosporidiosis with high rate of recurrence are presented. Recurrences in the cases reported here were: 49, 21 and 23 times respectively. These are much higher than that described in the literature so far. The clinico -- epidemiological aspects of the cases are discussed.
Tests for antibiotic resistance were carried out on 198 strains of Salmonella typhi and S. paratyphi A isolated from cases of enteric fevers. Their minimal inhibitory concentrations for streptomycin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, furazolidine and co-trimoxazole were estimated by plate dilution technique. Four strains of S. typhi and one strain of S. paratyphi A were found to show multiple resistance with a set pattern of resistance to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulphonamide, tetracycline and spectinomycin. All the five strains carried R-factors. Three of the resistant S. typhi belonged to Phage type 'O' and one was in Phage type 'A'. The single resistant S. paratyphi A belonged to Phage type '2'.
Over 18 years, 33 patients with congenital vascular rings underwent surgical treatment. All patients had full recovery except 1 who died late. At the one-month follow-up, 66.7% had complete relief of the presenting symptoms. Important aspects of the clinical picture, diagnostic methods, and treatment are presented. A coded nomenclature is proposed; we believe it to be accurate, inclusive, easy to remember, and readily referable to the embryological origin.
Thirty-two pediatric patients having open-heart operation received a single dose of either cephalothin or cephapirin intravenously, 30 mg per kilogram of body weight, in the operating room, for prophylaxis before the chest cavity was opened. Samples of right atrial appendage, pericardial fluid, muscle, fat, and plasma were obtained at various time intervals after injection of the antibiotics, and assayed for cephalosporin concentration. The concentration-time profiles of cephalothin and cephapirin in atrial appendage, muscle, fat, and plasma were identical. Cephapirin produced higher total and free concentrations in pericardial fluid compared with cephalothin. This presumably was due to the lower protein binding of cephapirin. Antibiotic concentrations above the minimal inhibitory concentration for Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis were present in myocardial tissue for at least 90 minutes after the dose was administered. These data support the need to administer these antibiotics shortly before surgical intervention and, if the operation is prolonged, the need to administer a second dose of antibiotic.

Leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) and T lymphocyte counts were used as measures of cell mediated immunity in 37 patients with rhinosporidiosis and 18 healthy individuals. LMI was higher in all the patients than the normal controls, and it was maximal in patients with infection of 3-9 years' duration. When the chronicity of infection exceeded 10 years, there was a fall in LMI response although it was still more than that of the normal controls. The T cell count was significantly low with infection of 1-2 years' duration than in normals, but it rose to normal values in patients with infection that had lasted 3 years or more.
A 21-year-old European male patient presented with a penile sore of two months' duration. Donovan bodies were detected in a tissue smear from the lesion, which healed after treatment with co-trimoxazole. Sclerosing granuloma inguinale was diagnosed.

A new technique incorporating the left atrial appendage for the reconstruction of the new atrial septum is described as a modification of the original Senning operation for transposition of the great arteries. In reconstruction of the atrial septal flap, the balloon septostomy defect is closed by approximating the inverted left atrial appendage to the anterior margin of the flap. This technique completely eliminates the necessity for foreign material in the repair of the new atrial septum of the Senning operation and has been used in 21 patients with good results.
