[Urinary magnesium excretion in nephrolithiasis].

Magnesium urine excretion and its correlation with calcium urine excretion were studied in 152 patients with nephrolithiasis by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. In 14.5% of the patients with unilateral nephrolithiasis and in the 25.6% of the patients with bilateral nephrolithiasis the magnesium urine excretion was lowered. Following calcium loading the magnesiumuria in healthy persons was reliably and positively influenced while in the patients with nephrolithiasis with initial lowered magnesium excretion there was an insignificant increase. The ration MgU/CaU is of special importance for the evaluation of the lithogenic risk. The determination of the Ca-Mg interrelation is obligatory for every patient with nephrolithiasis because of its great practical importance for the treatment of these patients.

[Effect of nitrates transferred from the mother on fetal hemoglobin and methemoglobin dynamics of lambs].

Investigated were 16 pregnant merino sheep, 5-7 years old with active weight 50 kg, divided into two groups--control and experimental. The experimental group was fed with forage, containing 0.65 nitrates from the dry substance of the ration. It was established that the elimination of part of the taken with the forage nitrates is realized through the milk. Traced were the periods of substitution of the fetal haemoglobin with adult in new-born lambs, and the influence of the liberated with the milk nitrates, taken by the sucking lambs, on the quantity of the methemoglobin.

[Attenuated vaccine against rota- and coronavirus enteritis in calves].

Tested was the effect of the Bulgarian attenuated vaccine of rota- and corona-viruses 'PoKo-81', via treatment of dry and freshly calved cows (injected into the udder) and newborn calves (peritoneal injection). It was found that calves fed three times daily on milk obtained from cows that had had intramammary injections did not develop clinical signs of a disease following experimental infection with rota- and corona-viruses. When the cows on infected farms were treated in the same way the disease in calves, offered immune milk, dropped to 36 per cent as against calves of unvaccinated cows, with which morbidity ran as high as 85 per cent. Calves vaccinated via the peritoneum did not fall ill after infection with rota- and corona-viruses on the 6th day following vaccination. In experiments on 18 infected farms morbidity among control, unvaccinated calves was 76 per cent, and mortality--6.8 per cent. With vaccinated calves on the same farms morbidity dropped to 44 per cent, and mortality--to 2.5 per cent. The duration of diarrhea in the vaccinated calves was radically lowered. Discussed is the possibility to enhance the protective effect of the vaccine.

[Comparative study of the assimilation of phosphorus from monosodium and dicalcium phosphate in piglets].

Experiments were carried out with 6 pigs to study the assimilation of phosphorus of monosodium (NaH2PO4) and dicalcium (CaHPO4) 32P-labelled phosphate. A group of 3 pigs was given monosodium phosphate, and another goup of 3 pigs--dicalcium phosphate. Each pig was given 32P orally, once, at the rate of 20 microCi per kg body weight. A pig of each group was killed on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th day following the administration of 32P. It was found that 32P of NaH2PO4 and CaHPO4 was eliminated mainly with the feces and mostly during the first 48-72 hours after treatment. The total amount of 32P retained in the body of those of the animals that were given CaHPO4 was comparatively higher (89.45-66.80 per cent) than that n the pigs given NaH2PO4 (87.31-52.56 per cent). The percent of 32P retained in the femoral bones and the investigated organs proved higher in the animals that were given monosodium phosphate (10.37-3.08; 24.63-7.15) than in those that were treated with dicalcium phosphate (8.88-3.63; 20.37-5.91). The higher percent of 32P retention in the pigs treated with monosodium phosphate concerned chiefly the gastrointestinal tract. Highest percent of retention in the investigated organs in both groups of animals was established in the small intestine (9.24-4.35 and 6.70-2.90), the liver (6.55-3.33 and 6.00-2.22), and the large intestine (4.50-1.25 and 2.06-0.70). The level of radioactivity of the blood was highest in the first 24 hours. It is concluded that P of monosodium and dicalcium phosphate is almost equally retained and assimilated in the body of pigs.

[Effect of vitamin B1 and vitamin E on methionine poisoning in broiler chickens].

An experiment was carried out with 100 broiler birds of the Leghorn breed, aged 20 days. The birds were divided into groups and were given various amounts of methionine--0,5, 2, and 3 per cent with the basic standard mixture. The clinical signs of methionine intoxication were followed up--drowsiness, weakness in the legs, opisthotonus, and twisting of the neck (torticollis) alons with the loss of equilibrium. It was found that with birds receiving 0.5 per cent methionine with the diet the amount of vitamins A, E, and B1 in the blood serum and the liver rose considerably, while with birds given 2 and 3 per cent methionine with the feed the amount of these vitamins dropped essentially. Therepeutic treatment with 3 mg of vitamin E and vitamin B1 each in the course of 4 to 6 days yielded a good effect. An improvement of the general condition and disappearance of the most typical symptoms of methionine intoxication were recorded.

[Biochemical and histological studies of cows with ketosis].

Biochemical and histological investigations were carried out with cows affected with ketosis in a subclinical and clinical form. Parellel studies were performed with normal (control) cows originating from the herds with the ill animals and manifesting the same physiologic status. It was found that the blood level of glucose in the diseased cows was lowered more than 2.6 times, and the content of ketone bodies was higher-- it was increased 4.6 times, that of total lipids was 2.6 times higher, and that of free fatty acids was 3.5 times higher as compared to the same indices in the controls. The blood content of pyruvate in the affected cows was also increased. The liver glycogen in these animals was lowered from 2.1 to 4.1 times. The activity of glucose-6-phosphatase was lower, and that of glucose-6-phosphatedehydrogenase was higher as against the same indices shown by normal cows.
