Erythrocyte membrane stearic to oleic acid ratio in carcinoma of the gallbladder: a preliminary study.

AIMS: The role of erythrocyte membrane stearic to oleic acid ratio (saturation index) as a marker of malignancy is still unclear, though an association has been found in colorectal carcinoma, bronchogenic carcinoma, leukaemia, lymphoma and in hepatic malignancies. This study aims to investigate the role of the saturation index in primary carcinoma of the gallbladder. METHODS: This paper describes the results of the stearic to oleic acid ratio determination in 26 subjects with either cholelithiasis or carcinoma of the gallbladder, also including a group of age- and sex-matched controls, using gas chromatography. This is the first report of the saturation index in carcinoma of the gallbladder. RESULTS: A significantly lower saturation index was observed in patients with carcinoma of the gallbladder than with cholelithiasis (t = 2.19, P = 0.043, T = 47, P < 0.05, Wilcoxon P < 0.001, F = 2192.23, P < 0.001; 95% CI 18.45-30.44) and controls (t = 2.5, P = 0.024, T = 36, P < 0.05, F = 10904.11, P < 0.001, Wilcoxon P < 0.001; 95% CI 52.42-63.39). Among the carcinoma patients a further lowering was noted in stage IV disease compared with stage III (T = 6, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These changes are probably due to a marked increase in oleic acid content at the expense of stearic acid. This lowering of the saturation index in carcinoma of the gallbladder is similar to that observed previously in the other malignancies.

Erythrocyte membrane fatty acid profile in patients with primary carcinoma of the gallbladder.

Erythrocyte fatty acids were determined in patients with gall stones and carcinoma of the gallbladder. Significantly low levels of myristic acid (P < 0.01) and stearic acid (P < 0.001) and significantly high levels of palmitoleic acid (P < 0.05) and oleic acid (P < 0.01) were observed in cancer patients. Arachidonic and linolenic acid were significantly high in gallstone patients, but there was no significant difference in the lauric acid and palmitic acid levels. Thus an altered lipid metabolism in cancer patients suggest existence of a possible association between gallstones, fatty acids, and carcinoma of the gallbladder.

Ascorbic acid status in uremics.

Plasma levels of ascorbic acid (AA) and dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) were estimated in 27 patients of end stage renal failure (ESRF) on standard conservative therapy (group A) and 9 patients of ESRF on maintenance haemodialysis (MHD; group B). Fourteen healthy subjects matched for age and sex served as control (group C). The dietary intake of vitamin C was significantly decreased in group A than in group B compared to control. Similarly, plasma AA was significantly lowered to 0.801 +/- 0.283 mg per cent in group A compared to 1.421 +/- 0.47 mg per cent in control. While it was just lowered to 1.058 +/- 0.272 mg per cent in group B. Although plasma level of DHA was raised to 0.243 +/- 0.486 mg per cent and 0.166 +/- 0.54 mg per cent in groups A and B respectively, the increase was not statistically significant. In our present study, the DHA/AA ratio was found to be inversely proportional to the plasma AA. Further, this ratio has been claimed to be a better indicator of overall reducing atmosphere (i.e., profile of vitamin C) of the body.

Ascorbic Acid↗

The effect of vitamin A and cortisone on ascorbic acid content in the aqueous humor.

Thus, it can be concluded from our observations that the effect of cortisone drops in reducing the concentration of ascorbic acid in the aqueous humor can be neutralized by simultaneous administration of vitamin A drops. This observation has an important clinical bearing, as ophthalmologists have hesitated to use cortisone locally for a long time for fear that it may either precipitate glaucoma or cataract (most probably because of the subsequent lowering of ascorbic acid concentration in the aqueous humor and lens). Our finding that with the administration of vitamin A drops along with cortisone drops there is no significant lowering of the ascorbic acid level in the aqueous humor indicates that one can use cortisone drops without being afraid of precipitating glaucoma or cataract.

Ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid and glutathione in liver disease.

Controlled studies were conducted to find out the plasma values of ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), urinary excretion of ascorbic acid and blood levels of glutathione in patients with viral hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis of liver and carcinoma of liver. Leucocyte ascorbic acid and DHA/AA index were also determined in order to assess the ascorbic acid status of these patients. It was observed that the plasma and leucocytes contents of ascorbic acid were significantly subnormal with markedly decreased urinary excretion in these patients. Decreased level of glutathione and significantly higher level of DHA reflect an over all reducing status of the body is markedly deranged in these conditions. Further it was observed that the DHA/AA ratios were significantly altered in these groups of patients.

Vitamin C status, glutathione and histamine in gastric carcinoma, tuberculous enteritis and non-specific ulcerative colitis.

Studies were conducted to evaluate the blood levels of ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, glutathione, and histamine in patients with gastric carcinoma, tuberculous enteritis and non-specific ulcerative colitis. Leucocyte ascorbic acid, urinary excretion of total ascorbic acid and ascorbic acid saturation test were also carried out in order to assess the ascorbic acid status of these patients. It was observed that the plasma and leucocyte content of ascorbic acid was significantly lower with markedly decreased urinary excretion in these patients. Further urinary excretion of ascorbic acid after a test dose was also found to be subnormal. Decreased levels of glutathione and significantly higher levels of histamine reflect an overall reducing status of the body is markedly deranged.
