Hepatitis-B virus and Indian childhood cirrhosis.

The surface and core componenets of hepatitis-B virus have not been detected in livers of patients suffering from Indian childhood cirrhosis using procedures such as immunoperoxidase, immunofluorescence, and orcein staining as well as electronmicroscopy. This finding, together with the other features of the disease, suggests that infection by this virus plays no significant role in the aetiology of Indian childhood cirrhosis.

The diagnosis and initial management of the acutely injured knee with particular reference to sport injuries.

A series of 115 consecutive cases of acutely injured knee, occurring mainly as a result of rugby-football, is analysed. It is suggested that the successful management of an acute knee injury often depends on the doctor of first contact. A scheme of diagnosis and early management is outlined. Acute subluxation of the patella is shown to be a definite entity in the differential diagnosis of an acute knee injury, and a classification for the purposes of the doctor of first contact is proposed.

Effect of clomiphene on the ponderal, histological and biochemical changes induced by stilbestrol and testosterone in the uterus of rats.

A comparative study on the effects of clomiphene on the stilbestrol- and testosterone-induced changes in the weight, histology and biochemical constituents of the uterus was undertaken. Clomiphene counteracted the stilbestrol-induced increase in the weight, and the absolute contents of the glycogen, protein and RNA of the uterus, possibly by competitive inhibition. It failed to prevent such changes induced by testosterone: on the contrary, there were some additive effects. The results of the present study indicate that the binding sites for the estrogen and the androgen in the uterus are different.

Effect of androgen on different biochemical constituents of human semen.

Changes in the levels of fructose, sialic acid, ascorbic acid, cholesterol and acid and alkaline phosphatases in the semen were studied in eight azoospermic volunteers during administration of testosterone propionate over a four week period. In order of responsiveness, elevations were observed in the levels of acid phosphatase, fructose, sialic acid and alkaline phosphatase during androgen therapy. No changes were seen in the levels of cholesterol and ascorbic acid.

Ultrastructure of articular cartilage in pyogenic arthritis.

The articular cartilage in pyogenic arthritis, induced in rabbit by intra-articular injection of Staphylococcus aureus, was studied with the electron microscope. The cartilage showed erosion of the surface and degeneration and necrosis of the chondrocytes starting from 24 hours onward, following the intra-articular injection of bacteria. The surface erosion and chrondrocyte necrosis progressed rapidly. The changes are believed to be due mainly to liberation of lysosomal enzymes from the synovial cells and polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
