Dogs infected with D. immitis were treated with oral levamisole hydrochloride at various dose rates over different durations. Clinical toxicity, haematological and biochemical parameters, body weight and food intake were recorded and filarial mortality estimated at autopsy. All filariae were dead in dogs treated at 10 mg/kg body weight twice daily (12 hourly) for 14 days, with minimal clinical toxicity being seen during the treatment period.

Surgery is the most effective means of controlling or curing cancer of the penis, but management of a patient with penile cancer encompasses more than excising the lesion. Anticipatory guidance and counseling are required components of total patient care. An integral part of counseling is psychotherapy, including marital and sex therapy. This comprehensive management program is best provided by a team of health care professionals including the family physician.
The purpose of this study was to compare perceptual responses (RPE) and selected physiological measures during both short term and prolonged exercise of equal relative intensities at 4300 m to those at sea level. Specifically, we compared results obtained (n=20) for 6 min of exercise at 60, 80 and 95% VO2max and at 5 min intervals during exercise to exhaustion at 85% VO2max. At 4300 m, VO2max was reduced 19%, while VEmax and Rmax increased 17 and 8%, respectively. HRmax and RPEmax was unchanged. For any given relative exercise intensity, VO2 and absolute exercise intensity (kpm-min-1) were reduced, while VE was about 12% and R about 7% greater at 4300 m; HR was unchanged. At 4300 m, RPE at the lower intensities of submaximal exercise and early during prolonged exercise were significantly less than at sea level. These differences were reduced and finally eliminated as exercise intensity increased toward maximal or as prolonged exercise continued to exhaustion. Endurance time to exhaustion at 4300 m was not different from that at sea level. To account for the perceptual differences between exercise at 4300 m an sea level, we proposed that local factors (muscular strain) exert greater influence on the perception of effort at exercise intensities which do not greatly stress ventilation and circulation, while central factors exert greater influence on the perception of effort at exercise intensities at which tachypnea and tachycardia are of sufficient magnitude to be perceived as extremely stressful.

Four young men each performed three treadmill walks to exhaustion at 70% of their respective O2 uptake maxima. Each walk followed 3 days consumption of either a normal mixed (M), high fat and protein (F-P), or high carbohydrate (CHO) diet. The fractional use of carbohydrates for energy during the initial 1/2-hr of work was significantly reduced following the F-P diet as compared with the M or CHO diets (P less than 0.005), averaging 38.2% (F-P), 69.9% (M), and 71.9 (CHO). Carbohydrates energy production was negatively correlated with blood levels of both free fatty acids ( r = -0.62, P less than 0.05) and beta-OH-butyrate (r = - 0.79, P less than 0.005). Work time to exhaustion was closely correlated with the fractional usage of carbohydrates for energy (r = 0.86, P less than 0.001). The femoral arteriovenous blood glucose difference was directly related to the pre-work dietary carbohydrate fraction, with the 30-min work means 0.25 mM (F-P), 0.34 mM (M), and 0.52 mM (CHO). Estimation of leg arteriovenous O2 difference indicated that leg uptake of blood-borne glucose provided approximately 23 +/- 10% (F-P), 30 +/- 8% (M), and 46 +/- 13% (CHO) of the legs' aerobic substrate during the first 30 min of work. These results provide further evidence for the shift from noncarbohydrate to carbohydrate energy sources during exercise as the carbohydrate fraction of the diet is elevated.
Rats were injected with monosodium 1-glutamate (MSG) daily for the 1st 5 days of life and allowed to mature. This is known to cause selective destruction of neurons in the retina and in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. The adult animals had a significant increase in body fat without an increase in weight, a marked reduction in pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, gonadal and prostate weights. Pituitary, hypothalamic and serum thyrotropin (TSH) were significantly reduced in the males. Serum growth hormone (GH) was markedly reduced in both sexes and the serum prolactin (Prl) was increased significantly in females. FSH did not appear to be abnormal and the LH may have been increased in the males. Serum T4 was significantly reduced in females. The fertility of the females was normal, but treated males mated with normal females showed a marked reduction in fertility and, although the litter sizes of the offspring were normal, the birth weights of the pups of both sexes were significantly reduced. These persistent alterations in neuroendocrine function indicate that lesions produced by neonatal MSG treatment provide a convenient model for studying hypothalamic function.
Studies have been carried out using neutral and alkaline sucrose density gradients to investigate the effect of 41 degree-43 degree C on the ability of Chinese hamster ovary cells to repair single (SSB) and double stranded DNA breaks (DSB) caused by exposure to ionizing radiation. The authors found that when hyperthermia exists prior to irradiation significant inhibition occurs. The data support the conclusion that unrepaired DNA damage may be lethal to the cell. Though no increase in radiation-induced DSB frequency was observed subsequent to hyperthermia, a 10-20% increase in SSB frequency was observed.
Six unacclimatized men rested for 4 h in a hot, dry environment (Ta 50 degrees C, Tw 26 degrees C; wind speed 0.5 m/s) without fluid replacement (DH). Another group of six men were exposed to the same thermal stress, replacing evaporative fluid loss with warm 0.1% NaCl solution (FRP). Total grams of circulating hemoglobin, determined by CO immediately prior to and again during the last minutes of heat exposure, increased an insignificant 1.6 and 1.3% during DH and FRP, respectively. With DH, body weight loss of 2.6% was accompanied by a 7.8% reduction in calculated plasma volume (PV). Even when body weight was maintained (FRP), PV decreased 2.9% during the heat exposure. Total circulating serum protein did not change as a result of the heat stress with either DH or FRP. In a test-retest series of experiments on four men, DH was not detrimental to sweat rate which averaged 251 g/m2-h compared with 239 g/m2-h with FRP. It was concluded that hemodilution is not a general response to acute heat exposure, and the disproportionately large reduction in PV during thermal dehydration was confirmed.
When neonatal rats are made hyperthyroid with large doses of thyroxine during the first 5 days of life, they develop hypothalamopituitary, thyroidal and gonadal abnormalities that persist through life. When female rats, which have been treated neonatally, are subsequently mated to normal males, their offspring show unexpected gonadal and thyroidal defects, such as reduced weaning weight and delayed vaginal opening and first estrus in females; males show a significant increase in relative thyroid weight and a significant decrease in ventral prostate weight. Cross-fostering was done to separate prenatal from postnatal influences. Even more surprising was the finding that when the untreated female F1 progeny were mated with normal males, the untreated F2 progeny showed more defects and to a greater degree than those present in the maternal parent.

The untreated progeny (F1) of hypothyroid male rats that were either radiothyroidectomized (Tx) or had the neo-T4 syndrome (an endocrine disorder produced by large doses of thyroxine (T4) injected during the neonatal period) were studied. The mother rats were all normal. The fathers never had any contact with their progeny. Unexpectedly, the progeny usually showed delayed eye opening, decreased weaning weights, and increased final body weight. The thyroid glands from F1 offspring of both Tx and neo-T4 fathers were enlarged significantly in all but F1 males of Tx fathers. The F1 of Tx fathers had significantly smaller uteri, both absolutely and relatively. The ovaries were significantly larger, whereas the testes were significantly smaller. Pituitary TSH, stalk-median eminence (SME) TSH, and serum TSH were all normal with the exception of an increase in SME TSH in F1 males born of neo-T4 fathers. The response to thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation of the F1 adult progeny of neo-T4 fathers was significantly blunted in the males, whereas the response was normal in offspring of Tx fathers. The mechanisms by which hypothyroid fathers caused changes in their progeny is not known.
