The serological responses of 195 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and 251 controls were tested against 6/94-parainfluenza virus, which was previously isolated from brain tissue of two patients with MS. The hemagglutination-inhibition titers of greater than or equal to 1: 128 were found more frequently in MS patients (21.5%) than in controls (14.0%). However, the geometric mean titers did not differ between these two groups. The present study concludes that a causal relationship of 6/94-virus to MS, based on a specific immune response, is improbable, although it does not exclude the possibility of a pathogenetic significance of the agent in the cases from which the autopsy material was derived.

The leucocyte count, total protein, albumin, IgG, IgA and IgM content of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 103 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients was determined. In 54 cases a simultaneous analysis of serum was also carried out. As a sign of an intact blood brain barrier the albumin concentration was normal in 76.7%. Taking into account the relative IgG quotient in CSF and serum, and the albumin and IgG concentration gradients between CSF and serum, it was possible to reveal an elevation of IgG content in CSF of MS patients in 75 and 83%, respectively. Without a simultaneous analysis of serum this was the case only in 51.5%. In MS cases with an intact blood brain barrier the values for IgA and/or IgM were slightly elevated in 11.7%. This study demonstrates analytic methods, which support the hypothesis of IgG synthesis by cells accumulating within the CNS in MS. A correlation of the laboratory results and clinical manifestation of MS was tried.

The influence of oral contraceptive agents on neurologic diseases in not clear. Animal experiments suggest that estrogens lower the seizure threshold whereas gestagens have the opposite effect. In women with epilepsy no change in the pattern of attacks could be observed under oral contraceptives. The inducing effect of hydantions and barbiturates on drug metabolizing enzymes requires the prescription of higher doses of estrogens and gestagens. Otherwise unwanted pregnancy can result, an especially unfavourable event in regard to the teratogenicity of hydantoins and barbiturates and possibly or oral contraceptives, too. An immunosuppressive effect of oral contraceptives - found in animals with EAE--could be favourable in respect to the disturbed immune mechanism of patients with multiple sclerosis and myasthenia. The influence of oral contraceptives on migraine seems to vary. The risk of arterial cerebral thromboembolic disease is increased in women taking oral contraceptives. The correlation to the estrogen content of the drugs remains to be proved.

The abuse of bromoureide (= bromocarbamide) containing sedatives gains increasing clinical relevance. Up to 50% of acute intoxications nowadays are caused by suicidal ingestion of bromocarbamides. The symptoms of the chronic intoxications are due to ionised bromide split off from the organic molecule and slowly accumulating in the organism. Due to the extremely long biological half-life of the bromide ion the chronic ingestion of bromocarbamides can be demonstrated easily and for long periods by determining the concentration of free, i.e. ionised bromide in serum or saliva. Simple and rapid methods suitable for screening purposes are discussed and the results of routine determinations of serum bromide in a psychiatric-neurological department are presented.
The long-term results of 12 stereotaxic operations on 11 multiple sclerosis patients with incapacitating intention tremor were evaluated and compared with the experiences of other authors. The selection of the patients, the criteria applied for the success and the length of the follow-up period influenced the reported results. Considering not only the relief of the intention tremor but the overall performance after the operation only a certain group of patients seemed to profit by neurosurgical treatment. Applying this criterion of overall performance and evaluation only 3 out of 11 patients in our series had real benefit from the operation. The reasons for this small number of good or moderate results are given with brief discussion of some of the cases. History, course and fatal outcome of one patient are presented in detail together with the neuropathological findings. According to the literature and the limited number of our own cases the following indications for stereotaxic operations on MS patients can be established: 1. Tremor and hyperkinetic movements should be the dominant features of the symptomatology. 2. The overall performance should be essentially improved by the operation. 3. Patients in the terminal stage of the disease gain little from the procedure, whereas patients with longstanding more benign course are the best candidates.
The clinical data of 812 patients with Multiple Sclerosis were recorded on optical mark reader-sheets and analyzed with the help of a computer program. In addition to statistical data on the sex ratio, mean age at onset, mean duration of illness the influence of some factors on prognosis were evaluated. The ability to work and walk was dependent on the duration of the disease and the type of the course, independent however of the age at onset and of the sex. The correlation between the clinical data and laboratory results is expected to give clues to the etiology and/or pathogenesis of the disease.
