[Effect of splenectomy on blood serum thrombopoietic activity (ATS) in patients with hematopoietic diseases].

Thrombocytopoietic activity (ATS) was determined in tests on mice on the day before and on the 1st, 7th, and 14th days after splenectomy in 18 patients (13 with idiopathic thrombocytopenia, 5 with haemolytic anaemia). It was found that in patients with ITP and high-grade splenic destruction of platelets ATS increased on the first days after splenectomy. On the other hand, in ITP patients with low-grade splenic platelet destruction splenectomy decreased the value of ATS immediately after the operation. Splenectomy performed in cases with normal platelet count caused no greater changes in ATS in the first week. These observations suggest that in patients with increased splenic destruction of platelets ATS may be inhibited and this inhibition may be removed after splenectomy. Absent correlation between ATS and platelet count may indicate that the value of ATS is not of decisive importance in thrombocytopenia regression following splenectomy.

[Treatment of acute leukemias in adults. II. Preliminary analysis of the treatment results according to AR and RAMP programs].

Thirty patients with acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemia were treated. They were randomly assigned to treatment according to programme AR (14 patients) and RAMP (16 patients). The groups were comparable for age and haematological state. Complete remission was obtained in 7 patients out of 14 treated by the AR programme and 6 out of 16 treated by the RAMP programme. The median duration of complete remission is as yet 15 weeks and 16 weeks respectively. The toxic side effects during treatment by the AR programme was statistically significantly higher than in the treatment by the RAMP programme. In the first group 42.8% of early deaths occurred, while in the second group 6.2% patients died early.

[Treatment of acute leukemias in adults. IV. Treatment results on 375 patients at 9 hematology centers].

On the basis of standardized protocols of the therapeutic results of acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemias in adults sent to the Institute of Haematology in Warsaw from 8 haematological centres in Poland it was demonstrated that complete remission occurred in 34.4% of patients (129 out of 375 cases). The mean survival time of the patients treated intensively according to programmes I, II, III and IV 8.6 months, those of patients with complete remission - 13.5 months, patients without complete remission - 3.7 months. The most frequent cause of death (82.5%) were infections and/or haemarrhagic diathesis.

[Cytophotometric studies of DNA contents in peripheral blood leukocytes in patients with infectious mononucleosis].

Cytophotometric determinations of DNA were carried out with a pulse cytophotometer in peripheral blood leucocytes in 25 patients with infectious mononucleosis and 30 patients with other infectious diseases. DNA cytograms of patients with mononucleosis showed presence of a high percent of cells in phase S and G2+M of the cell cycle. This is an evidence of active proliferation of these cells persisting for about 6--8 weeks. The authors believe that pulse cytophotometry may be used for detection and investigation of states with lymphocytes stimulation in vivo, e.g. in certain infectious diseases, during immunotherapy of neoplasms, rejection reaction etc.
