The expression for the sedimentation rate in inclined tubes given by Nakamura et al (Nakamura, H. and Kuroda, K. Keijo J. Med. 8, 256-296, 1937) is improved to be applicable to the problem that the falling velocity of a particle from the top wall of the tube v' differs from the one from the interface between the particle free layer and the suspended layer v. The effects of the shape at the bottom of the tube and the increase in height of the layer closely packed with particles are taken into account.

THP-ADM is a new anthracycline with broad antitumor activity without cardiac toxicity or alopecia in experimental models. Phase I studies had established a proposed dose for phase II trials of 50 mg/m2 every three weeks. This modality gave an insignificant result in breast carcinoma. Cellular pharmacokinetics suggested that a longer time of administration could be more efficient. In this phase II trial oriented to advanced breast cancer, we have used 3 consecutive daily doses of 20 mg/m2/day in monthly cycles with dose escalation in each patient. We have observed 28% partial remissions (PR). Two patients previously treated with adriamycin had PR. Significantly less alopecia and no cardiac toxicity were observed.

Two binding proteins which recognize and bind mannose and N-acetylglucosamine (mannan-binding proteins, MBP) have been isolated from chicken liver to near homogeneity mainly by affinity chromatography on a column of Sepharose 4B-mannan. The neutral binding protein (pI 7.0), which has a high glycine content, is an analog of mammalian liver MBP (F-I). F-I consists of a series of proteins composed of two subunits of 28,000 (A) and 32,000 (B) Da. The proteins have molecular weights ranging from 280,000 to 740,000 and subunit compositions ranging from 6A + 4B to 5A + 19B. With increasing molecular weight the specific activity of mannan binding increases gradually, accompanied by a slight change in specificity to a preference for mannose rather than N-acetylglucosamine. The acidic binding protein (pI 5.1) is a glycoprotein with a high glutamic acid content (F-II). The molecular weight of F-II was estimated to be 640,000, and it is composed of single subunits of 41,000 Da. The two MBPs isolated in this study are distinct from the liver lectin specific for N-acetylglucosamine-terminated glycoproteins isolated from the same source [T. Kawasaki and G. Ashwell (1977) J. Biol. Chem. 252, 6536-6543] in chemical properties and binding specificities.
Heat resistance at 95 C, heat activation at 75 C, and germination response were determined for spores of 10 serotype strains of Clostridium perfringens type A, including five heat-resistant and five heat-sensitive strains. The D95-values ranged from 17.6 to 63.0 and from 1.3 to 2.8 for the heat-resistant and the heat-sensitive strains, respectively. The heat-activation values, the ratios between the heated and unheated viable counts of spore suspensions, ranged from 0.0035 to 0.65 and from 6.5 to 60.0 for the heat-sensitive and the heat-resistant strains, respectively. Spores of these strains were divided into two distinct germination types on the basis of their germination response; spores of the heat-resistant strains germinated in KC1 medium after heat activation (K-type), and spores of the heat-sensitive strains germinated in a mixture of L-alanine, inosine, and CaCl2 in the presence of CO2 without heat activation (A-type). The strains were tested for enterotoxigenicity by a reversed passive latex-agglutination (RPLA) test. All the heat-resistant strains were RPLA-positive, whereas the heat-sensitive strains were all RPLA-negative. A total of 37 strains of the organism isolated from food-poisoning outbreaks were tested for spore germination and enterotoxin formation. All of the 20 heat-resistant strains showed K-type spore germination and, except for three strains, were RPLA-positive, whereas all of the 17 heat-sensitive strains showed A-type spore germination and, except for only one strain, were RPLA-negative.

A new physical theory of erythrocyte sedimentation is proposed. Various assumptions underlying Stokes' formula are first criticized. An explicit formula is proposed, taking into account some of the results of recent experimental investigations including the effect of upward flow of plasma and the time course of growth of aggregates. It is generally shown that the sedimentation curve without aggregation never becomes a sigmoid. Our formula is applicable to the increased ESR due to the aggregation of erythrocytes. The sedimentation velocity depends not only on the hematocrit and the ultimate size of the aggregates, but also on the retardation time of the growth of aggregates in conformity with the experimental result of Kernick et al.
