Spontaneous regression of esophageal carcinoma with pulmonary metastases: case report.

The first description of a spontaneous regression of a primary esophageal carcinoma with progressive growth of multiple pulmonary metastases is reported, and the possible cause of the spontaneous regression is discussed briefly with reference to T cell subsets. A 78-year-old Japanese man underwent an esophageal bypass with gastric substitution for carcinoma of the middle to lower third of the intrathoracic esophagus with aortic invasion. Two months after the operation, multiple pulmonary metastases were documented and were seen to progress gradually over the next six months. Seven months later, all the secondary lesions underwent a complete spontaneous regression. The primary lesion also regressed, but did not disappear completely. It was not possible to establish whether a change in T cell subsets was the cause or an effect of the regression.

[A case of early carcinoma of the remnant stomach that developed from gastritis cystica polyposa].

A 64-year-old man with an early carcinoma of the remnant stomach that developed from a gastritis cystica polyposa (GCP) is presented, and the morphology and histogenesis of this rare condition are discussed. This patient had a Billroth II reconstructed remnant stomach for 25 years, and was referred to our attention because of cholecystocholedocholithiasis. In screening an upper gastrointestinal barium study and an endoscopy revealed an irregular-shaped, flat, polypoid tumor in a stoma of the posterior wall. The resected polypoid lesion measured 4.5 x 3.0 cm. A histological examination revealed it to be a well differentiated adenocarcinoma of the mucosal layer that had developed from a GCP.

[A clinical study of immunological status in gastric cancer patients--with special reference to T-cell subsets in the lymphocytes of regional lymph nodes].

Non-metastatic regional lymph node lymphocytes of 41 patients with gastric cancer were studied by using different monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry. Used monoclonal antibodies were OKT3 (total T; CD3), OKT4 (helper/inducer T; CD4), OKT8 (suppressor/cytotoxic T; CD8) and Leu11 (NK/K cell; CD16). The results were as follows: 1. The percentage of CD3 cells and CD4 cells were about ten point fewer in lymph nodes than in peripheral blood. 2. CD8 cells were found to be one half or one third lesser in lymph nodes than in peripheral blood. 3. CD16 cells were found to be rare in lymph nodes. 4. The percentage of CD3, CD4 and CD8 cells were higher in distal lymph nodes than proximal ones. 5. The percentage of CD3, CD4 and CD8 cells were not different with progression of the cancer, whereas CD3 cells and CD8 cells were decreased in lymph nodes of stage IV. 6. The percentage of CD8 cells was higher in distal nodes of stage III. Regional lymph nodes are necessary to protect against cancer metastasis, and killer T cells and cytotoxic T cells were fewer in lymph nodes. These results suggested that killer activity and cytotoxicity of the lymph node lymphocytes are inactive and anergy.

[Infarctions in fibroadenomas of the breast during pregnancy--a case report and a review of the literature].

Described is a case of infarctions in fibroadenomas of the breast that occurred during pregnancy, with a review of the pertinent literature and a brief discussion on the difficulty of achieving a cytologic diagnosis. A 24-year-old female presented tender lumps that increased in size in her breast during the 7 months of her pregnancy. A subsequent cytologic examination revealed many typical cells with clustered nude nuclei. The cytologic diagnosis indicated a Group V, poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Following delivery of her infant, the lumps were excised. Microscopic examination revealed extensive infarcted fibroadenomas with lactational changes.

[A type IIa early carcinoma in multiple submucosal cysts of the stomach--a case report].

The case of a 60-year-old Japanese man with an early gastric carcinoma in submucosal multiple cysts is presented, and the morphology and histogenesis had complained of dysphagia, and an upper gastrointestinal barium study and endoscopy revealed an irregular-shaped, flat polypoid tumor in the antral mucosa. The resected stomach had a polypoid lesion, 11.0 x 12.0 cm, but no erosion or ulcer in the greater antral curvature was seen, and cut section showed many cysts containing mucus. A subsequent histological examination revealed a well differentiated adenocarcinoma of the mucosal layer. This early carcinoma was sited on and surrounded by multiple cystic lesions. These histological findings suggested that this carcinoma had developed from the mucosa that had an underlay of submucosal cysts.

Effect of Streptococcus lactis preparation in diet of mice on inhibiting age-dependent loss of superoxide dismutase activity in tissues.

SL-diet was prepared using commercial pellets supplemented with 1% pulverized Streptococcus lactis (SL). SL fed group of ICR strain mice were bred from 8 weeks up to 75 weeks. End-point age for survival in these mice was approximately 75 weeks. No significant differences in survival rate were observed at 75 weeks between the commercial diet and SL-diet group. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in the liver, brain and erythrocytes of 75-week-old mice significantly decreased compared with those aged 10 weeks. Cu.Zn-SOD and Mn-SOD activities in the liver and brain of SL-diet mice were maintained in similar degree in the juvenile group, however, decreased significantly in the commercial diet group. SOD in erythrocytes was slightly decreased and no significant difference was noted in either group.

[Colony stimulating factor producing carcinoma of the pancreas--a case report].

Reported is the case of a 71-year-old male patient with a pancreatic carcinoma that showed marked leucocytosis of up to 71300/mm3. Tests revealed that the patient's granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) in serum was 0.65 ng/ml and 0.74 ng/ml in pleural effusion, these values almost triple the values of a normal control (0.20 in serum, 0.25 ng/ml in pleural effusion). These findings have indicated that the tumor itself was responsible for producing the inflated values of the granulocyte-colony stimulating factor. This case of a G-CSF-producing pancreatic carcinoma is discussed, along with a review of the pertinent literature.

[Studies on immunological parameters in patients with gastric carcinoma--with special reference to analyses with monoclonal antibodies of T-lymphocyte subsets and interleukin-2].

We have investigated the distributions of T-lymphocyte subsets and interleukin-2 in peripheral blood of 62 patients with gastric carcinoma. The antibody (OKT3, OKT4, OKT8, OKT4/8, Leu11, and Leu7) treated cells were analyzed on a Spectrum III automated flow cytometer. Interleukin-2 was measured by the tritium-labelled thymidine CTLL assay on the supernatants of peripheral blood lymphocytes of gastric cancer patients after 24 hours stimulation with phytohemagglutinin. The number of OKT3, OKT4 cells and the ratio of OKT4/8 were decreased in patients with advanced gastric carcinoma compared with early gastric carcinoma. The numbers of Leu11 and Leu7 cells in patients with stage II and III were in higher levels than those with stage IV. Interleukin-2 production was depressed in patients in advanced stage compared with those of early stage. We concluded that the T-lymphocyte subsets and the interleukin-2 production were useful immunological parameters for gastric cancer patients.

The occurrence of paranuclear vacuoles in sheep ruminal epithelium treated with distilled water in vitro and from sheep injected with a large quantity of water into the rumen.

In the histological preparation taken after animal death, paranuclear vacuoles (PV) in sheep ruminal epithelium were already present in high percentage (7.5-20.3%). With the incubation of the ruminal mucosae in distilled water (10-15 degrees C) up to 120 min, PV occurrence did not alter. With incubation in NaCl solution, however, PV value decreased with time proportional to NaCl concentration (0.5, 0.85 or 1.5%). In the preparation taken by biopsy, on the other hand, PV were rare in ruminal epithelium (less than 0.3%). With the injection of warm water (10-141/animal), however, PV occurrence in the ruminal epithelium was not affected. PV as cytoplasmic processes of the ruminal Langerhans cells are probably formed by the reaction of these cells to environmental changes in the tissue caused by animal death.

Pharmacological action of hachimijiogan (Ba-wei-wan) on the metabolism of aged subjects.

In order to elucidate the active mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine, we investigated the effects of Hachimijiogan which has been alleged to restore the function of old degenerated organs. After administering Hachimijiogan to aged rats and mice, we examined the lipid and glutathione metabolism. The cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the mice liver were significantly decreased in the Hachimijiogan treated group. The cholesterol turnover was examined using labeled cholesterol in aged mice, and Hachimijiogan may increase the turnover of cholesterol metabolism. The lenticular glutathione levels and enzyme activities concerned with glutathione metabolism were investigated in aged rats given Hachimijiogan, suggesting that Hachimijiogan may offer protective and therapeutic effects against senile cataract. From our study, Hachimijiogan is considered to improve the lipid and glutathione metabolism as a result of its complicated in vivo compound effects.

A stathmokinetic study on the ruminal epithelium of sheep.

The metaphase arresting method using colchicine was applied to a kinetic study of the proliferation of sheep ruminal epithelium. Mitotic rate, calculated from the regression coefficient of the metaphase accumulation, was 0.0025 mitoses/cell per hour. Assuming the cell cycle time is about 24 hours as reported by Goodlad (1981), the growth fraction was calculated to be about 9%. The validity of the stathmokinetic method for ruminal cell kinetics is discussed.
